REPAIRS OF HIGHWAYS.

The streets have continued under the charge of James Riley as superintendent.

Taking into consideration the amount of money at our disposal, the number of miles of streets to care for, and the quality of material which of necessity we are obliged to use, we feel that our streets will compare favorably with those of surrounding towns.

This suit was brought for injuries claimed to have been received from an alleged defect in the sidewalk on Warren Street.

The amount of damages claimed was $1,000.

The Selectmen were satisfied at the time of the accident that the town was not to blame in the matter, and the only course open for them was to resist any claim which might be made for damages.

22

The result of the trial justified us in the stand we took in the matter.

REPORT OF OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.

The Overseers of the Poor herewith submit their report for the year ending December 31, 1896.

There has been no unusual demand for outside aid during the year, the amount rendered being somewhat less than the previous year.

The almshouse and town farm continue in charge of George R. Weaver and wife as superintendent and matron.

We have made some improvements the past year in the inside of the house. The old cooking range, which had out- lived its usefulness, has been replaced by a new one of more modern pattern. The walls and ceilings of all the rooms and hallways have been freshly painted. All the bedsteads, beds and bedding which had grown old and worn, have been discarded, and their place supplied with new goods. Every- thing about the inside of the house is clean and in good order. The outside needs painting, and we would recommend an appropriation of $150.00 for the same.
