ANNUAL REPORT OF ORAL HYGIENE-DENTAL CLINICS January 1964 - December 1964
I herewith submit my report of the dental work for the year 1964:
On January 22, 1964 the School Dental Clinic located at the Gov. Bradford Building was moved to the former Health Office in the Nathaniel Morton Intermediate School. The Bradford Building Clinic has served the pupils in the Cornish-Burton School District since 1919.
2,956 pupils were examined in Elementary, Plymouth- Carver High School in the fall, and 1,477 (50%) were found to have all needed correction made at this time. Mouth Safety Protectors were fitted to the Senior High Varsity Team.
This year, due to the increase in enrollment, we have used a new dental examination card for Senior High pu- pils, which is merely a notice to parents of the need for dental work.
215 pre-school examinations were given in May and 138 children had visited their family dentist. This exam- ination is important because of the contact made with the parent.
Percentage of Dental Corrections - Follow-up
Pupils examined grades 1-6, fall, 1963 1,437
Pupils with all necessary corrections made . . 715
Results of these examinations as of June, 1964.
Pupils with Dental Certificates

Hedge School 60%
Manomet School 65%
Mt. Pleasant School 76%
Nathaniel Morton School 61%
Oak Street School 89%

On the whole, dental health is improving each year. However, it must be reinforced by the parents in order to bring about the best results.

The dental program stresses prevention by following up the results of frequent examinations, and by instruc- tion in the classroom.

The A, B, C's of good dental health are:

1,059 pupils had a dental Prophylaxis (cleaning of teeth) in grades 1-6, with instruction.
National Children's Dental Health Week was ob- served in the schools. (February 2-8) .

More and more communities are legislating favor- ably the fluoridation of municipal water systems, and we most enthusiastically recommend to the voters to con- sider this matter seriously, as a means of preventing den- tal decay in the teeth of the school children.

REPORT OF THE MUSIC SUPERVISOR
With the appointment of a full-time music teacher for the Nathaniel Morton Intermediate School, I have been able to devote most of my time to the work in grades 1-5. This has enabled me to give the teachers more help in corrective work with children who do not read- ily learn to sing in tune. This help has been greatly needed, and is already showing results.
There are violin classes in grades 4 and 5 in all the elementary schools. Twenty-six children are enrolled in these classes. Hopefully many of those in school violin classes will eventually study with a private teacher, where much faster progress can be made than in a group with a limited amount of time at its disposal. However, the group has some advantages over private instruction. Children enjoy the group participation, learn from each other, and experience pre-orchestral training. I also have three violin classes and the orchestra at the Na- thaniel Morton Intermediate School. Altogether there
- 404 -
are 22 violin players in these groups, making a total of 48 boys and girls who are studying violin in school classes, as well as a number of children who are studying with private violin teachers. We hope that by June all of these, including the beginners, will have had at least some orchestral experience.
The newest venture in our music program was carried on during the year by a fourth-grade teacher. Through her encouragement, each child in her class bought a symphonette, a very inexpensive woodwind type of instrument. As part of the regular music program she taught the children to play simple songs in the key of C. The results were excellent, both from the stand- point of enthusiasm and music learning. In May the class played for the PTA. Their program included several solos, and duets as well as 3- and 4-part rounds played by the entire class. They also gave a seminar type demonstration to the other fourth-grade teachers of Plymouth. I hope that eventually all the children in grade 4 will be privileged to participate in this type of activity, for it has proved not only beneficial to the singing program, but also a great impetus to the study of instruments.
With increasing attention at the elementary level to rhythmic development and individual help for those children who find difficulty learning to sing in tune, we hope that each year brings us a little nearer to that goal set so long ago by the Music Educators National Conference, "Music for every Child: Every Child for Music."
Respectfully submitted,
GRACE M. MESERVE Music Supervisor

ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION REPORT
This year's program of physical education in the elementary schools has, for the most part, followed the same format as last years. The main goal of the program is the development of a sound and healthy body.
By creating certain standards of achievement it is the hope that the children will be motivated in the learning and building of skills. This can only be accom- plished by the children themselves, and their willing- ness to practice the skills taught to them during their leisure time. In this way, the children will become "doers" rather than "watchers."
Some of the changes instituted in our program are as follows:
1. Those passing the physical fitness and skills test will be awarded certificates from the Amateur Athletic Union.
2. There will be an expanded and more varied program of team sports and team games.
3. Square dancing, stunts and tumbling and self testing activities have been emphasized in the winter program.
4. This spring, track and field events will be taught. This will consist of sprints, shot put, running, broad jump and high jump.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE REPORT
The first year of operation for the High School was indeed successful. This attainment was only possible through the combined efforts of the entire staff of the District as well as the endeavors of the student body. The comprehensive high has become a reality for the two Towns.
Several minor problems still remain with us. The terazzo flooring has had considerable attention and it is believed before too long this will be resolved. A credit is being sought from the General Contractor because of the problems encountered.
A draft problem has been under study by the heating engineers and recommendations for corrections are ex- pected shortly.
The grounds around the school are being reviewed. This spring and summer should see the area revitalized. We have installed the bleachers and plan to use our foot- ball field in the fall.
The District received its first transportation reim- bursement which was applied against the proposed budget for 1965. This reflected a considerable credit, thus reducing the operating appropriation to the two Towns accordingly.
