DRAINS
A drain was installed on Farmhurst Road in Mano- met, a distance of 624 feet of 12-inch concrete pipe with three catchbasins built to keep surface drainage water from flooding cellars. A drainage problem was cor- rected on Cherry St. Court by building two catchbasins and laying of 160 feet of 12-inch concrete pipe on town right of way to a deep hole. The Town of Plymouth drainage system in the rear of the Plimoth Plaza was extended with 80 feet of 24-inch corrugated pipe to allow Mr. Pioppi to continue to fill in his land. At Roy Samp- son's on Federal Furnace Road, the required easement was obtained and one catchbasin and 40 feet of 12-inch concrete pipe was installed to keep drainage water from entering the Sampson yard.
The troublesome basins received their usual flushing with new pipes replaced where needed. Many cement slabs over the catch basins were replaced with grates and frames for better protection. The new STETCO hy- draulic catch basin cleaner with a 15-inch orange peel bucket purchased this year has proven very satisfactory in cleaning out approximately 400 basins throughout the town and Manomet. This catch basin cleaning unit was purchased from Casey & Dupuis Equipment Corp. of Watertown, Massachusetts for $3,194.80.

FENCES
The Reliable Fence Company of Norwell, Massachu- setts was awarded the bid according to specifications for installing the following chain link fences (Sand- wich St. at Ella Donovan's - 185 feet, 4-feet high with one gate, Clifford Road - 360 feet, 4-feet high on north and south sides; Standish Ave. at brook across from La- fayette Court - 100 feet, 3-feet high and Sandwich St. and Howes Lane - 61 feet, 3-feet high. The chain link fence at the Clifford Road Bridge was replaced shortly after installation by a wooden fence at the request of the abutters. The expense for the material for the wood- en fence was shared by the abutters and the Highway Department men erected the rail fence to their satisfac- tion. The 360 feet of 4-foot chain link fence has been stored at the Highway Department garage for future use. At Manomet Point, 460 feet of fence was installed by the Reliable Fence Company with the cement posts and wooden rails bolted. This fence was painted white by the Manomet District men. A small section of wooden fence was built at Bartlett Road Bridge and painted white. A 4-foot high chain link fence was installed on the east side of the Town House with the fence that was sal- vaged from the Market St. re-development area.
HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AND RECONSTRUCTION
The following streets were paved with a 21/2-inch type I mix over the old pavement consisting of a 11/2-inch base and 1-inch top: South Street (back of playground), Cushing Drive, Bourne Street, Sever Street and Hemlock Street. These two streets were paved with a 3-inch mix- in-place top of gravel and asphalt over existing gravel base: Westerly Road from Summer St. to Billington St., a distance of 2,650 feet and Hilltop Avenue in Manomet from Taylor Ave. to a dead end, a distance of 1,650 feet.
Chapter 90 Maintenance
The State, County and Town share one-third of the cost on the following maintenance of streets in the amount of $6,000.00: a section of Obery Street paved with 606 tons of Type I mix from South St. to the County Farm Road by Southeastern of Cape Cod, Inc .;
-326 -
Samoset Street from the water tank to the Carver Road; mixed-in-place surface followed by a seal coat of one- quarter gallon of asphalt per square yard and covered with sand.
Chapter 782 Acts of 1962
Lewis Street and Olmstead Terrace were paved with a Type I surface with the balance of the funds provided by the State under Chapter 782 Acts of 1962 of the Gen- eral Laws.
Chapter 822 Acts of 1963
The following were completed with aid of funds fur- nished by the State under Chapter 822 Acts of 1963 of the General Laws: Cliff Street, widened from 21 feet to 25 feet with shoulders gravelled and Type I sur- face constructed 21/2 inches in depth in two courses of 11/4 inches each. Funds still remain in the project for a 4-foot blacktop sidewalk to be laid on the south side of the street in 1966.
Federal Furnace Road, widened 20 feet to 26 feet from the Carver line to 500 feet towards the Plymouth line. A mixed-in-place surface 11/2 inches in depth was laid over the widened section of 500 feet. A manhole was built about three feet off the road for drainage. In 1966 approximately 400 feet of Type I pavement will be continued on this section of Federal Furnace Road with the remaining funds.
Manomet Heights Drainage
Manomet Heights drainage system of 413 feet of 12-, 15-, and 18-inch asphalt covered corrugated metal pipe with five new catchbasins and one altered existing basin with 4,339 feet of bituminous concrete berm was completed by Balboni Bros. of Plymouth for $5,898.00.
Bartlett Road Construction
A section of Bartlett Road was improved from Indian Cemetery to Route 3A by construction of a section of highway 2,100 feet long, including a mixed-in-place bituminous surface, gravel founda- tion and drainage. Seven catchbasins were built

and the laying of 600 feet of 18 inch reinforced concrete pipe and 85 feet of 12-inch reinforced concrete pipe and one head wall to drain surface water into Bartlett Pond. The road foundation was variable in depths and gravel 4 inches deep was laid over the present road and shoul- ders were widened with gravel 8 inches in depth. A 3-inch mixed-in-place surface including driveway ap- proaches was laid and sealed with a sand cover. Bal- boni Bros. Inc. was awarded the contract for this work for $13,247.87.
Granolithic Curbing and Sidewalk
Louis Cotti & Sons, Inc. of Plymouth submitted the lowest bid for the construction of concrete curbing: Nick's Rock Road, south side - 238 feet; Royal Street, west side - 254 feet; Olmstead Terrace, north side 256 feet; Nick's Rock Road, north side - 1,437 feet and Park Road, north side - 545 feet. At the Bluebird Res- taurant 135 feet of curbing was raised and reset to keep water from entering the restaurant. A new concrete sidewalk was laid with the owner of the Bluebird Res- taurant sharing one-half of the cost. At the Harbor Fly- ing A Service Station, located at the corner of Park Avenue and Water Street, the corner was cut back for a distance of 30 feet to make a secure entrance on Water Street. The 30 feet of cement curbing was replaced and painted white.
TRAFFIC AND STREET MARKING
Traffic lines were painted yellow and white this year conforming with the state traffic regulations. White crosswalks were painted in the spring and fall and re- painted as needed. Taxi stands and restricted areas were painted yellow. A yellow center line was painted on South St., for a distance of 500 feet and on Birch Ave. for a distance of 250 feet. The traffic department made and erected several new scotchlite traffic and street name sign faces all conforming to state regulations.

purchased from Town Brook Service Station. The Catch Basin Cleaning Unit with a 15-inch orange peel bucket was bought from Casey & Dupuis Equipment Corpora- tion of Watertown for $3,194.80. A lightweight 3-inch single diaphragm pump mounted on rubber-tired wheels was purchased for use in the sewer department for $398.00.
The work in the Manomet, Long Pond and Cedarville districts has been carried out satisfactorily by the three district foremen. The cutting and burning of brush, gravelling, widening of bad corners, snow and sanding, scraping of dirt roads and applications of calcium chloride to lay the dust, were all given proper attention.
The requests from the Selectmen's Office and other town departments were taken care of as received at the office.
Newly accepted streets have been bounded by the Town Engineer with bounds made by the Highway De- partment.
Permits to dig up and open the grounds were issued to the local gas and telephone companies who properly guarded and lighted all excavations.
Lines and grades for street, drain and sewer work have been supplied by the Town Engineer, Edward Chase, and records of same filed at his office on Lincoln Street.
Respectfully submitted,
