THE FORTY-THIRD ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
TRUSTEES OF TAFT PUBLIC LIBRARY
-
We have had another very successful year in our library work, even though the efficiency has been somewhat impaired, due to the break that necessarily comes with change of librarians. In September, Mrs. Helen Hemond resigned, but Mrs. Lena George again kindly consented to act until Mrs. Verena Daley was secured to fill the vacancy. Mrs. Daley has already shown a very commendable interest in the work. Besides attending to her regular duties she has repaired a large number of volumes that would otherwise have gone to be rebound.
Our heating system is far from being effective. Changes will have to be made immediately in order that the building may be comfortable in which to work.
We would call attention to the fact that this is a public library, free to all residents of the town and our librarian stands ready to serve you. In conjunction with our schools it is the educational center of the town.
Respectfully submitted,
FRANKLIN E. GOODNOW, Chairman, EDWARD F. BLOOD, Secretary, LENA W. GEORGE,
G. H. PICKARD, CARROLL H. DROWN,
Trustees of Taft Public Library.

AUDITOR'S REPORT.
I have examined the accounts of all the Town Officers, who have received or disbursed funds belonging to the Town for the fiscal year ending January 1, 1924 and find them to correspond with their proper vouchers.
I find the Tax Collector has omitted one abatement of $37.60 from his report, which would make the uncollected that amount less, for the year of 1921.
Respectfully submitted,
LUTHER W. HOLBROOK,
Auditor.

MR. THEODORE N. WADDELL,
DIRECTOR OF ACCOUNTS,
DEPARTMENT OF CORPORATIONS AND TAXATION,
STATE HOUSE, BOSTON.
Sir :-
In accordance with your instructions, I have made an audit of the accounts of the Town of Mendon for the period from Jan- uary 1, 1920 to June 30, 1923, and submit the following report thereon :
The financial transactions of the town as recorded on the books of the several departments were examined and checked.
The surety bonds of the tax collector and the town treasurer for the faithful performance of their duties were examined and found to be in proper form, but the bond of the tax collector ex- pired on July 12, 1923, and had not been renewed. The town clerk has not been bonded in the past, as is required by Section 13, Chapter 41 of the General Laws, but he made application for a bond at once when the matter was called to his attention.
The books and accounts of the former town treasurer were examined and checked for the period from January 1, 1920 to March 17, 1921. The recorded receipts were verified and the expenditures were checked with the departmental bills and pay- rolls and with the selectmen's orders authorizing the payments of town funds.
The cash balance as shown by the treasurer's cash book on January 1, 1920 was accepted as correct, and the following adjustments were made :- The report of receipts was increased by $1.75 on account of cash received for the library and omitted from the treasurer's report ; the report of payments was increased by 18 cents to agree with the selectmen's summary of town orders and by $1.50 on account of highway orders, and was decreased by $50 on account of orders on the Austin Wood Relief Fund, as
40
that fund is held separate from the general treasury cash, making the payments of town orders $23,500.32 for the year 1920. The cash on hand on December 31, 1920, was adjusted from $278.49 to $328.56.
The receipts from January 1 to March 17, 1921 were $5,936.54, and the credits for payments for the same period were $3,019.05, showing a balance of cash on hand March 17, 1921 of $3,246.05. The bank balance, amounting to $3,190.18 was turned over to the present treasurer, leaving a balance of $55.87 due from the former treasurer.
