FORTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT

OF THE

TRUSTEES OF TAFT PUBLIC LIBRARY.

It is very gratifying to realize that our library is very steadily increasing in its usefulness and becoming each year a greater factor in the educational life of the town.

It is impossible to estimate the value of our reference works as an auxiliary to the schools, but it is our purpose to strengthen that department as far as possible with the income of the Fletcher Fund. To that end we procured a set of the New International Encyclopaedia which will be kept up to date with a Year Book.

Are we taking advantage of these resources placed before us to broaden and elevate our mental powers? Let us make great- er use of our library during the coming year.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.

TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE TAFT PUBLIC LIBRARY :-

The circulation for the year (101 days) was 10,102 volumes. The largest given out in one day was 187, the smallest 31, the average 100. The circulation by classes was as follows: Fiction, 7572; Magazines, 1647; Bound Magazines, 52; Biography, 166; Travel, 14; History, 185; Literature, 137; Useful and Fine Arts, 150; Science, 74; All others, 105.

There are 7208 volumes in the library. 164 volumes have been added the past year and 12 have been taken out as they were worn out. 44 were bought by the town and 120 were given as follows :

Fletcher Fund, 40; Miss Julia Darling, 24; Massachusetts Library Commission, 25; Secretary of the Commonwealth, 8; Mr. Thurber, 5; Miss Lucy Scribner, 5; by binding, 4; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford, 1; Anonymous, 8.

The library subscribes for the American, Asia, Boys' Life, Century, Child's Life, Country Gentleman, Field and Stream, Harper's Monthly, Ladies' Home Journal, Life, Literary Digest, National Geographic, Radio News, Saturday Evening Post, Scribners, St. Nicholas, Woman's Home Companion. The Library Commission sends the American Boy, Good Housekeep- ing, Popular Mechanics, and World's Work. The Farmer's Wife, Dumb Animals, National Republic, People's Home Journal and the Buddy Book are given.

The pupils of the High School continue to use the library and several books were bought for them this past year which were suggested by the teachers.

56

A large per cent of the Grammar and Intermediate Pupils are reading for the State Reading Certificates. In order to obtain a Certificate each one has to read five books that are on the State List for their grade before May 1, 1928 and make a short report on them. The library has practically all the books on the Lists and they are books which every child should read. There were 22 pupils who received Certificates last June.

$26.13 was received in fines during the year.

Respectfully submitted,

VERENA R. DALEY,

Librarian.
