REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS.

March 15, 1926.

BOARD OF SELECTMEN, MENDON, MASS.

Gentlemen :-

The following is a list of roads in the town of Mendon, giving the names, approximate mileage, and the proportional allotment for each.

This allotment does not mean that this amount must be spent upon each road, but only enough to put the roads in a good passable condition, care being taken of the drainage, cul- verts, and brush work along the roads, with necessary repairs for the year.

In no case must the amount spent upon each road exceed the allotment unless it is absolutely necessary, in which case an order must first be obtained from the State Engineer before doing so.

All money, if any, saved during the year from these allot- ments may later be spent for permanent improvements where necessary.

REMARKS.

The work upon the roads during the season has been satis- factory, considerable gravelling has been done. Brush has been cut and burnt on some roads.

Under Chapter 90 there was constructed 4,250 ft. of road- way on the Providence Road which should be oiled the coming season. There remains 3.700 ft. yet to be completed to the Blackstone line. The town should continue this work this com- ing season, and thus complete this road to the line.

Mr. Saucier has proved a very capable man, and strongly recommend his re-appointment as Superintendent of Streets for the new year.

Respectfully submitted, R. A. VESPER,

Chapter 81 Assistant.

FORTY-SIXTH ANNUAL REPORT

OF THE

TRUSTEES OF THE TAFT PUBLIC LIBRARY.

-

In reviewing the records of the past year, it is interesting to note the general upward trend along all lines in this branch of the life of the town. While the general circulation has increased over seventeen per cent, that of literature shows over fifty per cent, and History nearly one hundred per cent.

The building has been painted the past summer, at a cost of two-thirds more than the original estimate, causing a curtailment along other needed lines.

It is with pleasure that we announce the receipt of Five Thousand Dollars by the town, under the will of the late Austin Barclay Fletcher. That portion of the will which refers to the library is as follows :-

"To the Taft Library, Mendon, Mass., I give Five Thousand Dollars in trust, however, the income to be used for the purchase of books, and to be known as the "Fletcher Fund."

Austin Barclay Fletcher was born in Mendon, Mass., March 13, 1852 He was the son of Asa Austin Fletcher and Harriet Edna (Durkee) Fletcher. He graduated from Tufts College in 1876, later taking courses in law, and oratory at Boston Univer- sity, of which he was afterwards a trustee. It has been said of him that he never sought public office, and the time which he was able to give to outside matters was mainly devoted to educational and philanthropic enterprises. This is shown to a marked degree

51

in this gift to our library, for which the town should be highly appreciative.

This means far more than appears on the surface, as this gift will now warrant the procuring of many needed works of reference that we have previously not been able to consider, and greatly raise the standard of our library. This is a truly pleas- ing recognition of his birthplace.

FRANK M. ALDRICH, Chairman, EDWARD F. BLOOD, Secretary, LENA W. GEORGE, GEORGE H. PICKARD, CARROLL H. DROWN,

Trustees of Taft Public Library.
