REPORT OF THE Selectmen, Overseers of the Poor and Board of Health
To the Voters of the Town of Agawam:
Herewith we present our annual reports. We have been able to finish the macadam road on Main street during the past year. Rock necessary for this work was delivered from the city yards in Springfield, thereby saving the labor cost of shoveling, and from there was hauled at a cost of more than twenty-five cents per ton less by motor trucks than it could have been hauled by horses.
With the permanent work on Main street completed, we recommend that the next piece of road to be undertaken extend westerly on Springfield street from the Agawam bridge, toward Feeding Hills.
In accordance with your instructions our reports of moneys expended in the different parts of the town for street work are given in separate items.
A decision of the tax commissioner upon the value of the shares of stock of the Springfield Street Railway Company dim- inished the amount of our receipts for excise and corporation taxes by about a thousand dollars. Our receipts from bank and corporation taxes have also fallen off from last year.
As Overseers of the Poor we have found the year rather ex- pensive, and we have exceeded our appropriation. Times have been hard. We have had many extra calls, and from present in- dications next year will demand even more.
As members of the Board of Health we recommend that the Town make some provision for the disposition of garbage and rubbish, particularly in Mittineague, either by the purchase of a dumping ground or otherwise.
