REPORT OF Selectmen and Overseers of Poor
To the Citizens of Agawam :-
Your Board of Selectmen and Overseers of the Poor present to you their annual report.
As was foreseen last year the total expenses have been in- creased in the Pauper Department. We have at present some forty persons who are receiving aid. Where whole families are aided it has been necessary to furnish tenements as well as other aid. We have tried to keep within the appropriation but the total expense has been large. Unless there is some change for the better a larger sum will be needed in the future.
HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT.
We have found in the case of the special appropriation (made at the annual meeting last year in the Agawam District) that the amount specified has been largely overrun. There is at present a considerable sum due Springfield for the resurfac- ing of South End Bridge. We have still a number of small bridges that will soon have to be renewed and it is probable that the macadam on Main Street, Agawam, will need more or less repairs. We should recommend that more of the roads be laid out and highway bounds set.
As there is liable to be petitions for special work on certain streets which, if granted, will cost some considerable expense we would like you to consider the matter carefully before commit- ting the Town to this way of doing.
