There was a total of three hundred ninety-five (395) acci- dents during the year; two (2) being Fatal Accidents; two hun- dred thirty-four (234) involving Personal Injury and one hundred fifty-nine (159) involving Property Damage only.


As a result of these accidents there was a total of three hun- dred forty-three (343) persons injured.


The two Fatal Accidents were as follows:


On August 6, 1953 at 6:10 P.M. William McVeigh, fifty-eight (58) years of age, of 493 Concord Avenue, Belmont, while crossing the Concord Turnpike just west of Lake Street, was struck by a truck, receiving injuries which resulted in his death on the same date at 8:32 P.M.


On October 18, 1953 at 10:02 P.M. Esther L. Kehoe, thirty- nine (39) years of age, of 24 Cypress Road, Arlington, while riding as a passenger in an automobile which came in contact with a parked car on Summer Street, between King Street and Overlook Road, received injuries which practically resulted in her death instantaneously.


There were three hundred seventy-five (375) accidents in- vestigated and a total of eight hundred sixty-one (861) persons interviewed, this last total being arrived at as follows:

The Traffic Signal Department is responsible for the proper in- stallation and maintenance of all aids to the regulation and control of automobile traffic on the public ways throughout the Town for the safety of the general public such as the planning, erection and maintenance of all traffic signals; the erection and maintenance of all traffic signs of every description; and the painting of all traffic lanes, curb markings, street markings, cross-walks, parking stalls, etc.
