At a legal town meeting October the 16th 1722 Mr. John Porter chosen moderator. Voted to raise the sum of 75 pounds to defray our towns debts.


At a meeting of the Selectmen of Wenham on the 5th day of September 1722.


Two lists are made and committed unto the two Consta- bles of our town. Viz. to Constable Daniel Fisk a list amounting to the sum of twenty pounds five shillings and fourpence whereof he is to pay to the County treasuer £15 18$ 6ª


and to our town treasuer £4 6$ 10ª


And to Constable Joseph Haggitt the sum of seventeen pounds thirteen shillings & sixpence and he is to pay to the province treasuer twelve pounds and to our town treasuer the sum of five pound 13 shilling & 6 pence £5 13$ 6ª the whole sum is in all £17 13$ 6ª


The province treasuer £12 00s 00d to the town treasuer £5 13$ 6d.


At a meeting of the Selectmen of Wenham a town rate was made a list to Constable Daniel Fisk amounting to the sum of £37 4$ 4d and to pay in to our town treasuer at or before the last day of November next after the date hereof And a list to Constable Joseph Haggitt amounting to the sum of £31 75 5d to be paid in by the time above mentioned.


At a meeting of the Selectmen of Wenham a County tax was made £ A list is committed unto Constable Daniel Fisk amounting to the sum of five pounds five shillings and five pence £5 5$ 5ª whereof he is to pay in unto the County treasuer by the 28th day of Febuary Instant the sum of two pounds the remainder being three pounds five shillings and five pence he is to have for the collecting of rates and abatements and lost money in his lists.

A list is committed unto Joseph Haggitt amounting to the sum four pounds nine shillings and one penny whereof he is to pay unto the County treasuer the sum of two pounds ten shillings and two pence half penny by the 28th Febuary Instant and the reminder being 1 pound 18 shillings and six pence half penny is allowed him for collecting of rates, and abatements and lost money.


March 4th 1722/23 Received in full of all the rates that Constable Joseph Haggitt was to pay to me 1722 of said Haggitt by me Thomas Tarbox Town treasuer The above is truely compared.

At a meeting of the Selectmen of Wenham March 4th 1722/3 then reckoned and accounted with Joseph Haggitt Constable and allowed him four pence upon the pound for all the rates committed to him to collect and for lost money and abatements in all his lists and have allowed him the sum of four pounds five shillings and seven pence in full of and for the overpluss in the County rate twelve pence upon the pound having all the overpluss in the County rate which is in the rate £1 18$ 11%d


And at the same time Reckoned with Constable Daniel Fisk and allowed him fourpence upon the pound and allowed him for all lost money and abatements in all his lists in full. And allowed for the overpluss in the County rate 12 pence upon the pound and for and towards the lost money and abatements and collecting all rates 1722 all the overpluss in the County rates which is £3 5$ 5d and the abatement is 3 pounds 18 shillings and 8 pence.

At a meeting of the Selectmen of Wenham March 5th 1722/3 then the respective officers hereafter mentioned whereto they are chosen to the several offices were sworn, William Rogers John Kemball Thomas Kimball Ebenezer Fisk Stephen Patch Phineas Dodge Robert Cue Thomas Per- kins Thomas Brown David Batchelder Symond Patch John Gott Thomas Dodge, Thomas Tarbox.


At a meeting of the Selectmen March 5th 1722/3 then Lieut. John Porter Samuel Kilham Mr. John Batchelder Nathaniel Brown appeared and were sworn on the day above said to the office of Assessors and at the same time Thomas Patch sworn to the office of tithingmen.


At a meeting of the Selectmen March 11th 1723 then agreed with John Rogers to keep the meeting house and ring the bell for the year ensueing untill the first day of March next coming after the date hereof and to have the sum of three pounds for his service.


At a meeting of the Selectmen March 11th 1722/3 then Theophelus Rix appeared and took the oath of tithingman and surveyor of fences Benjamin Edwards Stephen Patch and Daniel Batchelder were sworn to their respective offices whereunto they were chosen and the said Edwards sworn to the office of trustee.


Received of Joseph Haggitt of Wenham Constable the sum of two pounds and ten shillings and sixpence -1 half penny in part of the County Tax for said town.

At a legal town meeting March 25th 1723


Deacon Fisk chosen moderator


Voted that the use money of the 232 pounds that is let out to Mr. Ward shall be ordered or put in to the town treasuey for the use of the town.


Voted to choose Benjamin Edwards to be a trustee in the room of Lieut. John Gott desea'st. Voted to choose Daniel Batchelder the Clerk of the Market. Voted to raise the sum of sixty pounds to defray the towns engagements.


Voted to choose Thomas Kemball Caleb Kemball and Theophelus Rix are chosen to be a committee to look after encrochments conserning the highways in our town.


At a meeting of the Selectmen of Wenham on the 3rd of April 1723 a town tax was made a list to Constable Thomas Tarbox amounting to the sum of thirty seven pounds sixteen shillings eight pence £37 16$ 8ª and to be paid in unto our town treasuer at or before the fifteenth of May 1723.


And a list to Constable Symond Patch amounting to the sum of twenty nine pounds eight shillings and eight pence £29 8$ 8ª to be paid in unto our town treasuer at or before the 15th day of |1723| with warrants to said lists.


Wenham May the 8th 1723 At a legal town meeting assembled, William Fairfield chosen Representative. Voted that Swine shall go at large the year ensueing.


At a meeting of the Selectmen May the 8th 1723 then agreed with Mr. Daniel Dodge to keep school for the year ensueing untill another be appointed and to have ten shil- lings of the town for his pains.

We the Selectmen of Manchester and Wenham and such as they have appointed to perambulate the lines and renew the bounds between the said towns Viz. Manchester and Wenham being met together on the 30th day of April in the year 1723 have accordingly met and perambulated the line and renewed the bounds according to former settlement beginning at the tree Marked W and M formerly a white oak but now a white pine is agrowing in the roots or Stump of said oak thence to a red or yellow oak thence to a clump of maples thence to a hemlock about 2 feet to the eastward of the pine formerly a pine cut, now a stump from thence to Dodges stump all of which are according to former settlement between said towns respectively.

At a meeting of the Selectmen of Wenham September the 30th 1723. A Country tax was made and a list committed unto Constable Thomas Tarbox belonging to his ward amounting to the sum of £19 16s 0d. whereof he is to pay to the Country treasuer the sum of £14 8$ 71/2ª penny as by his warrant the remainder of said list the the sum of being the sum of £5 7$ 51/2d which said sum £5 7$ 5d Said Tarbox is to pay inunto our town treasuer according to a town rate and is by his warrant for the same at the same time delivered to him he is to pay by the last of Febuary next coming after the date hereof


And a list committed to Constable Symond Patch amount- ing to the sum of £15 15d Od whereof he is to pay to the Country treasuer the sum of thirteen pound ten shillings the remainder being the sum of £2 5s Od which is allowed

Voted to raise one hundred and thirty pounds to defray the towns debts and engagements for the year ensueing.


At a meeting of the Selectmen of Wenham Nov. 12th 1723. A rate was made and a list committed unto Constable Thomas Tarbox belonging to his ward being part of a town rate which he is to pay in unto our town at or before the first day of December next coming after the date hereof with a warrant annexed to the same the sum is £71 18$ 0d. And a list to Constable Symond Patch amounting to the sum of £56 18s 9d which said Patch is to pay in unto our town treasuer at or before the first day of December two thirds of said sum as by their warrants may appear.

At a legal town meeting on the 3rd day of March 1723/4


It was put to a vote wether the votes that were put in should be allowed and it passed on the negative, it being about a moderator.


Voted that Lieut. Porter is chosen moderator for this meeting.


Voted to choose the Constables and moderator and town Clerk shall sort the votes for the Selectmen.


Lieut. John Porter Samuel Kilham Ensign John Batch- elder, Nathaniel Brown William Dodge are chosen Select- men for the year ensueing.


William Fairfield chosen town Clerk for the year ensueing and sworn the same day.


Robert Cue Chosen Constable for the west of the town and Daniel Kilham for the east end of the town and sworn the same day. For Surveyors of the highways John Herrick for the west end of the town and Timothy Patch for the neck and Nathaniel Fairfield for the middle part of the town. Nathaniel Fairfield, John Herrick and Timothy Patch sworn the same day. David Batchelder Daniel Fisk and Stephen Patch chosen for tithingmen and all sworn to the discharge of their office the same day.


Benjamin Edwards Ezekiel Day chosen fence viewers and sworn the same day.


Benjamin Fisk chosen Town treasuer and sworn to the discharge of sd office.


Edmund Kemball and Nathaniel Dodge chosen hog reves and sworn the same day.


Daniel Batchelder chosen sealer of weights and measures. Joseph Edwards chosen sealer of leather.


Lieut. John Porter Deacon Ephraim Kemball and Capt. William Rogers chosen a committee to take care of perfect- ing the fenceing of the burying place.


At a meeting of the Selectmen of Wenham March 9th 1723/4 Joseph Edwards was sworn to the office of a Sealer of leather whereunto he was chosen the 3rd Instant. Allso then the said Edwards was ordered to procure a |Seal| suitable for his office at the towns charge.


At a meeting of the Selectmen March 9th 1724 Mr. Ebenezer Kemball was agreed with to keep the pound and to repair what is needfull to keep it Sufficient the town to pay the charge of the reparation. .

Then allso agreed with John Rogers to take care of the meeting house and do the service belonging to a sexton for the sum of three pounds for the year ensueing and allso to procure the graves to be diged for any that want who are to pay him over and above the said sum for the same


We whose names are hereunto subscribed by an appoint- ment of the Selectmen of the towns of Salem and Wenham have purambulated and renewed the bounds between the said towns and do find them agreeable to the within and we reniewed the marks and laying more stones to the same and have allso marked the apple tree in Mr. John Herricks orchard with S and W which before was not marked all of which is according to the late settlement made between the aforesaid towns Anno Domini 1721 April 27th 1724 John Moulton For

We are subscribers being appointed and empowered by our respective towns of Wenham and Beverly to purambulate upon the line and renew the bounds between said towns have accordingly met and renewed said bounds on May 24th 1724 in manner as followeth begining at a white oak in Nathaniel Raymonds pasture marked with W.B. and stones about it and thence to a white oak tree at Alfords hill so called marked with W.B. and stones about it and thence easterly to a stake on the easterly side of longham meadow marked W.B. and a heap of stones about it and thence to a stake and heap of stones on the southeasterly side of Racoon Marsh so called and thence Southeasterly to a yellow oak tree and stones about it marked W. B. and thence to a white oak tree and stones about it marked W.B. and thence to a white oak tree on gravelly ridge so called marked W.B.

At a meeting of the inhabitants of Wenham duely warned and convened for the Choosing of a representative to serve in the great and General Court as allso to choose a com- mittee to seat our meeting house and to determine wether the swine shall go at large the year ensueing as by warrant. Lieut. John Porter chosen moderator for this meeting. Lieut. John Porter chosen to serve and represent the town in the great and General Court for the year ensueing.


For a committee to seat our meeting house Mr. Daniel Dodge. Ensign John Batchelder Walter Fairfield Samuel Porter Timothy Patch are chosen therefor the major part of them for that service.

At a meeting of the Selectmen Augt. 6th 1724 Then Lieut. John Porter Ensign John Batchelder Sam- uel Kilham and Nathaniel Brown Selectmen took the oath of Assessors there being no other Assessors chosen.


September 31st 1724 Then accounted with Ensign Thomas Tarbox late Constable of Wenham for the rates committed to him for the year 1724 amounting to one hundred and fifteen pounds two shillings and a penny as by town records doeth appear and have reckoned by receipts from the for- mer treasuer and other payments according to order with one pound nine shillings and three pence in money received which is in full of said sum and said Constable Tarbox is acquitted of said rates accordingly by me Benjamin Fisk Town treasuer The above is truly entered from the original receipt. At a meeting of the inhabitants and freeholders of Wen- ham duely warned and convened this 28th day of Septem- ber 1724 to give order for raising a tax on the town for de- fraying the charges and to consider of the proposals made by the reverend Mr. Ward conserning purchasing some of

his land for the use of the ministry and some other consid- erations in his present difficult circumstances as by warrant. Mr. John Coy chosen moderator for this meeting. Voted that the Selectmen shall assess the inhabitants of our town at one hundred and twenty pound to defray the town charges for this year.


The question being put to the town wether they would purchase his land and it passed on the negative.


September 7th 1724 At a meeting of the Selectmen a province tax was made in two distinct lists for defraying the towns proportion of the province charge with fourteen pounds seven shillings and nine pence overpluss of the province tax which is for the towns use divided as followeth. Viz. to Constable Robert Cue a list amounting to £44 19 $ 9d which £35 4s 4d is to be paid to the province treasuer ac- cording to his warrant and £9 15$ 5ª to be paid in unto the town treasuer according to his order.


And to Constable Daniel Kilham a list amounting to £34 12$ 4ª of which Sum of thirty pounds is payable to the province treasuer according to his warrant and £4 12s 4d to be paid to the town treasuer according to his order both of which Sd Constables orders are to pay in their respec- tive sums to the town treasuer at the time set in the prov- ince warrant which is to be paid in by the last day of March next.


October 24th 1724 - A tax was made on the inhabitants of our town for the defraying of the towns charges in two distinct lists Viz. To Constable Robert Cue a list amount- ing to £76 18$ 9d


and to Constable Daniel Kilham a list amounting to £56 15$ 11ª


unto both which lists their warrants annexed maketh the said payable into the town treasuer for the towns use the one half at or before the last day of November next and the other half at or before the last day of May next. So as to issue their accounts at or before the first day of July next ensueing.

For fence viewers Theophelus Fisk John Gott and Ne- hemiah Dodge were chosen for the year ensuing.


For tithing men John Moulton and Benjamin Edwards were chosen for the year ensueing.

Nathaniel Waldron took the oath of office whereunto he was chosen April 27th 1725.


At a meeting of the freeholders and other inhabitants qualified to vote in town affairs duely warned and convened this 10th day of May 1725 for choosing a representative and other town business according to warrant Deacon Eph- raim Kemball chosen moderator of said meeting.


Capt. William Rogers chosen Representative for the year ensueing.


Voted that swine being sufficiently yoked and ringed shall go at large the year ensueing. Allso voted that the select- men shall agree with some person or persons to teach school in our town.


Voted to purchase the land described in the Reverend Mr. Wards petition of him for a parsonage and for a committee to perfect the same Mr. Daniel Dodge and Lieut. Samuel Kemball and Nathaniel Brown were chosen.


Voted that the committee last chosen to seat our meeting house shall proceed no further in that work.


For the inhabitants of the town of Wenham


Sirs. I find by experience that the purchase I made is more than I can go through with and am therefore necess- eated to sell a part that I may in time with the blessings of providence clear the rest. both of the neighboring par- ishes have provided parsonage pasture for their minister and if you should be inclined to do the same for me by buying that parcel of land which lies between the highway leading over to the neck and land in the possesion of my neighbor Ezekiel Days. You will greatly add to those testimoney of your kindness to me which I have allreay received and do thankfully acknowledge I desire not any money in hand for the same bpt only you would discount a hundred pound of what I am indebted by bond to you for it is the discharge of my debts which lie so heavy upon me that I regard and aim at in this matter and if this proposal be accepted by you and you see meet to appoint
