REPORT OF P. E. GRIFFIN, ROAD AGENT
The accompanying figures embrace all of the money re- ceived and expended by me in the construction of Church street, in the Village of North Walpole, the cleaning of the streets and catch-basins, plowing off sidewalks, shovelling snow from arch bridge, sanding sidewalks, aud plowing off sidewalks from April 12th, 1913 to Feb. 1914.
In connection with this report it might not be out of place to state that during the construction of Church street we were very much handicapped by the delay caused by the railroad in failing to deliver the crush stone used in the con- struction of the street. We used on the work seventeen car loads and the delay in having these cars placed necessitated a delay on the work practically from ten days to two weeks. We were also forced to go to a large expense in the gravel bank in order to get the proper material, and several mca were employed days at a time in removing the slides and digging down to get proper material for the road.
It is needless to say that these two elements were some. thing that were unforeseen and inevitable so far as building the road was concerned, and necessarily increased the expense of construction at least $500.00.
Of the amount expended $49.74 was used in raking and cleaning and drawing away rubbish from the streets and cleaning catch-basins. $59.32 was expended in removing the snow from the arch bridge, plowing and shovelling snow from sidewalks, sanding sidewalks, etc. The balance, $1,336.73 was expended on Church street, and $1,000.00 of this amount was raised by a special appropriation at the March meeting.

REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON TOWN LIBRARY For Year Ending March 1. 1914.
During the year 1913, 170 volumes have been added to the library, 136 by purchase-10 from the income of the F. A. Carpenter fund. Books have been presented by the following persons, to whom the thanks of the town are due: Mr. Frank- lin W. Hooper, Miss Jennie M. Ball, Miss M. P. Hillhouse, Mrs. C. B. Holmes, Mrs. Alexander Davidson. Mrs. W C. Banning, Mrs. Charles Howland. Mrs. Hudson E. Bridge, Mr. Arthur P. Davis. Mr. Henry K Willard, Miss Helen Wotkyns, Double- day, Page & Co., National Lumber Manufacturers Association, Chamber of Commerce, Cal., Stat. of New Hampshire, C. P. Putnam's Sons, and two by the authors.
The "Literary Digest" has been presented by Mrs. J. E. Bellows, and the "'Youth's Companion" by Miss M. Caldwell, and Miss E. Hayward.
The number of volumes taken out has been as follows:
Walpole,
9,778
North Walpole,
1,946
11,724
Drewsville, Not reported
The committee reports with regret, the death of Mrs. Henry E. Putnam of Drewsville, who had charge of the Drewsville branch, and rendered most valuable services there. The books at Drewsville are now in charge of Mrs. Charles Whitman.
Miss Mary G. Bates and Dr. T. Bellows Buffum were ap- pointed to fill vacancies on the library committee, and another vacancy now occurs through the resignation of Mrs. A. P. Richardson which was accepted with regret. Mrs. Richardson has been a member of the committee ever since it was organ.
40
iezd in 1891 when the books were transferred to the Bridge Memorial Library.
The committee has suffered a severe loss in the retirement of Miss Buffum, now Mrs. Williams, from the position of sec- retary and treasurer, which she so ably filled since the resig- nation of Mr. Peck. Mrs. Williams gave unsparingly of her time and interest, and was always active in plans for the im- provement of the library. The new cataloguing system, which has resulted in greatly increased shelf room and efficiency, was largely due to her zeal and energy. She still retains a place on the committee.
An appropriation of $500.00 is recommended for next year.
