REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON TOWN LIBRARY, For the Year Ending March 1, 1912.
The whole number of volumes now on the catalogue is 10,497, of which 183 have been added during the past year. Of this number 88 have been purehased with the annual appro- priation, 11 have been purchased with the ineome of the Mrs. F. A. Carpenter fund, and others have been presented by vari- ous donors, the list of whom is as follows: Mrs. George A. Butterfield, Henry H. Butler, Miss Annie M. Buffum, Mrs. Colver, Arthur P. Davis, W. M. Gibbs, Mrs. F. M. Gilbert, Rev. Anson Rogers Graves, Miss Hillhouse, Prof. Franklin W. Hooper, Ifon. Henry E. Howland, Miss Bertha Keyes, Mrs. Harleigh Parkhurst, Miss Anna Chapin Ray, Miss Bertha Smith, David M. Tipton, Albert H. Zabriskie. The thanks of the town are due to all who have presented books.
The number of volumes taken out in 1911 was 11,379, di- vided as follows :

The branch at North Walpole has been carried on as usual with Miss Anna C. Hartnett as librarian. The branch at Drewsville has been eared for by Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Put- nam. Both branches have been of great value in their localities.
The reading room has been well patronized during the year. The usual variety of magazines has been purchased from the reading room fund, which is maintained by voluntary subscriptions. Henry G. Wheeloek of Brookline, Mass., has continued to present the "Century," "Strand" and "World's Work." Other donations have been "The Fra" from Miss Mary B. Stone, "Literary Digest" from Mrs. J. G. Bellows, and "International Studio" from Miss Gertrude von Briesen of New York.
The library committee has lost one of its members by death during the last year, Mr. Henry E. Putnam, who for about twenty years has given unsparingly of his time and in- terest, especially to the eare of the Drewsville branch.
During the past summer the library was recatalogued un- der the direction of Miss Matilda L. Avery of Colehester, Conn., a graduate of the library sehool at Pittsburg, Pa. The Dewey decimal system of elassifieation is now in use and the Browne charging system. As one of the reasons of reeata- loguing the library was the necessity of more shelf room, dupli- cates and some of the less valuable books were removed. The best of these were sent to the North Walpole braneh. To meet the expense of recataloguing $195.44 was raised in the follow- ing way: $40.44 was realized by the sale of waste paper, $50 was given by the Footlights, and $105.44 was contributed by individuals. Of this amount, $185 was paid to Miss Avery for her services and the rest was applied to the cost of supplies. It is felt by the committee that the reorganization of the li- brary will add much to its usefulness. The thanks of the town are due to the many people who helped so willingly in the work carried on last summer.

REPORT OF WALPOLE CEMETERY COMMITTEE,
For the Year ending March 1, 1912.
The usual care has been taken during the last year of the Village cemetery, and of the cemeteries on Carpenter's hill and in Drewsville. George H. Holden has had charge of the Vil- lage cemetery, E. C. Belden has cared for the Drewsville cemc- tery and the Lovell lots located there, and Clinton W. Tenney has had charge of the cemetery on Carpenter's hill. Lots carcd for by the income of funds and legacies have been kept mowed with a lawn mower and enriched in the fall.
During the year the town has received a fund of $100 from Mrs. Helen Kittredge Russell for the care of the Jesseniah Kittredge lot in the Village cemetery.
Four lots have been given out during the year to heads of families applying for them.
Many of the stones in the old part of the cemetery needed attention; during the year some have been reset, the broken ones mendel and leaning ones straightened and put in good condition. The old part of the cenctery has been mowed twice during the summer, which added much to its looks.
For the care of the Towns and Ralph Watkins lots the sum of $21.75 has been expended from the Hannah W. Towns
38
fund. The income on this fund was $16.72 and the amount of the fund is now $413.07. The Towns lot has been put in first class shape by being resodded and seeded.
An appropriation of $50 is recommended to meet the ex- penses for the coming year.
Respectfully submitted,
GEORGE H. HOLDEN, Cemetery Committee.
