Though all of these teachers, both old and new, are worthy of space in this report, I will speak of but four. Mr. McNamara resigned last June to accept a more responsible position at Norwich, Conn. His work at North Walpole was of such excellence that he will long retain the gratitude of an appreciative community. Prin. James A. Russell is a gradu- ate of Holy Cross with subsequent study at Clark University. He came to us with previous experiences at teaching and I feel that the schools at the north village are in the hands of an especially efficient master. After seven years of service in this district Miss Buffum resigned last June. She is generally con- ceded to be an ideal teacher. Miss Sunbury resigned in order to complete her course at the Lowell Normal School. If there is a vacancy in the district, and it is possible so to do, she should be reengaged at the completion of her course.

Your superintendent has devoted especial attention dur- ing the present school year to the subjects of composition, both oral and written, grammar, penmanship, oral arithmetic and spelling. I believe a marked improvement is detectable in the composition work of the pupils in the upper grades, and the beginning of a new cra in penmanship in all of the grades. The exponents of the old Colburn's Mental Arithmetic will be gratified to learn that regular drill from a text in this subject has been found profitable in its results. It would be rather pre- sumptuous to claim at this time any great improvement in spelling, but I assure you, gentlemen of the board, that the subject is receiving due attention in all of the grades. An honest effort is being made to make good spellers of our pupils.

The domestic science work this year has been in charge of Miss Catharine N. Platts. Miss Platts received the prepara- tion for her work at Wellesley and Simmons colleges and had had some experience at teaching. She was highly endorsed by the authorities at Simmons and has proved an expert in her department. The course is designed to arouse in the pupils a healthy interest in matters domestic and to teach true economy

45

in the management of household affairs. It has been the aim to make this work as practicable as possible and applicable to the conditions as they exist, or ought to exist, in the average family in such a community as ours.

I believe that the heating of the high school building should receive your attention. I would recommend the in- stalling of two steam radiators in the assembly room of the high school and the same number in the room occupied by grades VII and VIII. In early fall when but little heat is needed, and that only in the morning, it would seem that the situation could be casily handled by using this supplementary system, and that too, at a great advantage in the saving of fuel. The same conditions would prevail in late spring, while during the coldest weather of the winter much strain could be taken off the hot air furnaces. The expense of installing these four radiators would probably not exceed $200 and this amount would be saved in fuel in a short time while more satisfactory results would be expected.

It is to be hoped that a few dollars may be spared from the repair fund to complete the fitting of grades III and IV with slate blackboards and to make a beginning of equipping the high school room with the same.

The desks, walls, and ceilings of several of the rooms at Walpole need attention. Nothing has been done to them for several years. I need not remind you that the appropriation voted last year was found adequate to retouch but one build- ing at North Walpole.

I have attached to this report the curricula as approved by the Department of Public Instruction for the Walpole High School. This is practically the same as last year but grouped differently. I see no reason for a change in the immediate future. At present there are 12 pupils pursuing the courses under curriculum 1, and 21 under curriculum 11, 7 electing agriculture and 14 domestic science.

46

With siucere thanks to the board for their cooperation, support and confidence, to the teachers for their earnestness and loyalty, and to the people of Walpole for their hospitality, this report is respectfully submitted.

LOUIS De WITT RECORD, Superintendent of Schools,

Walpole-Westmoreland-Langdon Supervisory District.
