"Mrs. Hull (Anna Bowne) was the sole survivor of nine children of David Bowne, an old-time citizen of what was then Freehold-now Marlboro-township, the third wife of the well-remembered Judge John Hull, of the Monmouth Bench. One of the rare relics of a generation that is all too rapidly becoming extinct, she could trace a long, unbroken line of ancestry far up the ages to "Merrie England" of the olden times. Indeed she came of a race long-lived and strong of frame, upright in character, and orthodox in faith. Family tradition saith, in truth, that one of her remote progenitors was engaged with the celebrated Tyndale in his early translation of the Scriptures, that after the sudden and violent death of Tyndale, many of his co- laborers, among them Mrs. Hull's great-grandfather, alarmed, fled to the Bermudas, whence, about the year 1668, an ancestor came to this country, settled, lived and died, etc."

"Death of an Aged Woman.

Mrs. Mary Clark Bowne, died at her home, near Freehold, on Feb. 24, in the 95th year of her age. She was born in Dublin, on Dec. 22, 1793, and was a daughter of Alexander Clark, a Scotch Highlander. Her parents came to this country when she was an infant, and located in New York, where her father, who was an architect, entered upon the business of a builder. Here she passed her childhood and then entered a French school, where she received a liberal education. A sister of hers had been previously married to William Bowne, and on May 1, 1823, Mary became the wife of John Bowne, a brother of William, the two being associated in business in Freehold. The husband of Mary became a prominent citizen, and at one time held a judgeship in the county courts. He died here in 1869. Mrs. Bowne was a remarkably well informed woman; she had an extensive knowledge of important historical events, and could converse intelligently upon a variety of subjects. She was always of a cheerful disposition, unselfish in her acts of kindness, and patient and submissive in suffering. She was greatly esteemed for her many good qualities of mind and heart. About five years ago she met with an accident which prevented her from walking without assistance. During her helplessness she was kindly watched and waited upon by a nurse specially engaged for that purpose. Her last illness was brief. It was occasioned by a cold. Her great age and her enfeebled condition prevented her from withstand- ing its severity, and she succumbed to its attack. She leaves a son, Mr. John Bowne, who resides on the home- stead farm, and three widowed daughters, namely-Mrs. J. A. Hartshorne, of New York, and Mrs. Marga- retta Crawford and Mrs. Eleanor Edwards, of Brooklyn. Funeral services were held at St. Peter's Epis- church (of which the deceased was a member) on Monday afternoon, and were conducted by Rev. Mr. Cullen. The remains were interred beside those of her husband in the Freehold Cemetery."

In January, 1892, there was a Rev. George William Bowne, M. A., pastor of an Episcopal church, in Philadelphia, who had differences with his superiors concerning church affairs. It appears he had previously been stationed at Salisbury, MId., and in June, ISS9, after some difficulty with his vestry, withdrew and joined the Roman Catholic Church, and was stationed for a brief period at an institution in Baltimore. Issue A large family

"Gershom Bowne, I, I am led to believe, emigrated from Westchester County to Fishkill, as early as 1770, or before. His papers fell into the hands of his executors as early as 1825," etc.

The descendants of Gershom Bowne have become numerous and among them have been men of talents, much esteemed in their day.

Obadiah, Gershom and Samuel Bowne, all residents of Fishkill, N. Y., were all called to offices of honor and trust in their native town.

Obadiah Bowne was a sprightly man and the life of social gatherings. About the year 1810, at a family meeting, he ventured the remark that in thirty years the name of Bowne would be unknown in America. The male members at that time appeared few and the pros- pect of increase not flattering. Had he lived to our day, he would have thought otherwise. It is a noted fact, that scarcely without an exception, the Bowne family are splendid natural penmen, in fact, it is in our day, called the "Bowne gift."
