George Crawford purchased the residence of Squire Taylor, called "Taylor's Folly." This house, known as the Rev. Mr. Beel:man's, was burned to the ground a few years since, (1898). A picture of it was published in the Atlas, many years ago. Mr. Crawford resided there until his death, about 1830. Ile built a store on the road in front of his residence, where he carried on a mercantile business for a long time.

37 RICHARD CRAWFORD, son of Richard Crawford, 15, died, unmarried, Mch. 17, 1830, aged 30 years, 8 months and 22 days. He was called the "fox hunter, " was a sports- man and convivial fellow; a friend of Capt. Edward Kearny, of Key Grove, and a jolly set. He loaned his hounds out, or rather gave them away, but whenever he wanted a hunt, he sounded his horn from the hill-top, and the dogs broke loose from every direction, and came at his call to slink to their respective homes when the day was over-a neat way to keep a kennel at another's expense.

It seems as if there might be some connection between these individuals, Crawford and Parker:

"Rich Billy Parker" was a noted fox-hunter, living in the vicinity of Shrewsbury and uncommonly eccentric. He was wont to take his hounds to meeting with him. Some of the ungodly, more than once, carried a fox trail round and through the Quaker Meeting-house, at Shrewsbury, and rich Billy was more than once held accountable for a violent commotion with his dogs in the midst of divine service. He was ruined by endorsing, it is said, his son- in-law Crawford's notes.

76 GEORGE B. CRAWFORD, son of John Bowne Crawford, 57, married Miss Frost. Issue 108 John B. Crawford 109 Richard Crawford IIO James Crawford All were living in 1896.

The Crawfords, in the vicinity of Freehold, N. J., were probably of kin but the degree of their relationship I have not seen stated.

They were of a generation or two later than John Crawford, the early settler in Middle- town. They were a prosperous and able lot of people, and politically prominent in their day.

GIDEON CRAWFORD was apparently the first of the name in that locality.

Between 1709-10 and 1720, Gideon Crawford was an appraiser, executor and witness, for people living in the vicinity of Freehold.

In 1715, and probably for many other years, Gideon Crawford was Sheriff, of Monmouth County.

He married Sarah Redford, and is alluded to in the will of Samuel Reidford, of Freehold, written Feb. 15, 1709-10; proved June 7, 1711, as, with Andrew Reidford, "my loving brothers."

The following reference may be to Sarah, the wife of Gideon Crawford:

3 SAMUEL CRAWFORD, supposed son of Gideon Crawford, I, married Naomi Van Brackle, by license dated Dec. 3, 1740. They were both of Monmouth County. He died, intestate, in 1752, and July 16, of that year, his wife, Naomi, and John Van Brackle qualified, administrators of his estate. He was alluded to as "late of Upper Frechold, yeoman."

1752, Oct. I. The inventory of his personal estate, taken this date, was signed by his widow, as Naomy Crafard.

There was a Samuel Crawford buried in the Scots' Burying ground, Marlboro, who died, July 8, 1748, aged 35 years and 3 months. Probably they were his children who were baptized at Tennent Church, Aug. 25, 1745, with the names Reyntie and Keturah.

4 ANDREW CRAWFORD, supposed son of Gideon Crawford, I.

1731, June II. Entered his earmark on Middletown Town Book.

1735-6. Andrew Crawford appeared on Holmes' Account Book, Middletown.

1735, Oct. 17. Andrew and Gideon Crawford were appraisers of the estate of Thomas Boels, of Freehold.

1750. Andrew Crawford was a witness to a will of this date, with Richard Francis, and from a memorandum attached to this, it would appear that Margaret Francis was a daughter of John Stanly, of Middletown Point, trader, who had a wife, Grace, but all the above assertion needs proving, from hasty transcription.

Andrew and Mary Crawford had baptized at Tennent Church:

9 Gideon Crawford, Sep. 16, ..... As he died Sep. 1, 1831, aged 64 years and 8 months, he may possibly have been baptized in 1767.

IO James Crawford, on the same day.

5 WILLIAM CRAWFORD, supposed son of Gideon Crawford, I.

William Crawford died, Mch. 22, 1760, in his 55th year. He was Sheriff of Middlesex, and is buried in the Scots' Burying ground.

1760, Mch. 16. Will of William Crawford, of Middlesex County, sick, etc .; proved Apr. 22, 1766, mentioned:

Son, William Redford \ Son, Lewis Daughter, Margaret 1 Daughter, Gertruyd } minors. Daughter, Lydia

who received his estate, equally.

The testator signed his name to the will.

William Crawford married Hannah, daughter of Archibald Craig, of Freehold, whose will written in 1755, gave her a legacy.

6 GIDEON CRAWFORD, supposed son of Gideon Crawford, I.

This Gideon Crawford, it is more likely, belongs to a generation later than that of the children of Gideon Crawford, I, from the late date of the following marriage license:

1754, Dec. 15. Gideon Crawford, of Freehold, had a license to marry Helena Taylor, of Middletown.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Gideon Crawford McDowell, of Wickatunk, is a descendant of the Freehold Crawfords.

1756, Oct. 26. James Crawford, of Freehold, and Margaret Warne, of Freehold.

1767, June 6. Andrew Crawford and Eleanor Johnson.

1748. Esther Crawford, with a son, John, was mentioned in an account of this date, but I have no proof at hand whence this was obtained.

· 1689-90, Feb. 21. The personal estate of John Crawford, of Middletown, was inventoried and amounted to £107-3-6, which included a negro boy, of the value of £50. William Merel and William Jones were sworn to the same, May 29, 1699, says the memorandum, but it should probably read 1689. Who this individual is, I have no information.

CURTIS

OF

BURLINGTON AND MONMOUTH COUNTIES

1 . .. .. CURTIS, the father of Thomas Curtis (2) and John Curtis (3), was an English- man of whom nothing is known. It is unlikely that he ever came to this country. The assertion that Thomas and John were brothers is not supported by any documentary proof that I recall, but is generally accepted as correct, and I concur in this statement. The home of Thomas, prior to his emigration, was in Northamptonshire, England, and it is a natural deduction that it was likewise the home of his father. The two emigrants, Thomas and John, were perhaps redemptioners, though I fail to find their names in the imperfect lists of these people.

THOMAS CURTIS, son of ..... Curtis, 1. He and his wife belonged to the Society 2 of Friends, and, as appears from their records, resided at Bug Brook, Northampton, Old England.

Upon the Records of the Friends of that district, there appears a list of his children, which I am inclined to believe is incomplete. The family did not, apparently, come over collectively, but by instalments. He was settled in Burlington County as early as 1682-3, when he recorded the birth of his daughter, Mary, while about seven months earlier, July, 1681, his daughter, Elizabeth, aged then about fifteen years, and his daughter, Sarah, then aged about eighteen years, still in the old country, bound themselves out to service in this country. In addition to the three daughters so far mentioned, he had Jane, Dorothy and Abigail, and supposedly a son, Thomas. That he had others is more than likely, for there is an interval of sixteen years between the births of his last two children, during which many others could have been born to him. The surname of his wife I do not know, and it is possible he had two of the Christian name of Jane, for the youngest and oldest of his children were born far apart, and his wife remarried twice. He named his new home, in New Jersey, Bug Brook, after his residence in Old England.

1685. Thomas Curtis owned land in Burlington County.

1686, Oct. 10. Peter Harvey and wife Sarah, conveyed lands to Thomas Curtis, of Bugg- brook, West Jersey.

168S. Thomas Curtis was dead and Jane, his widow, remarried successively, John Chapman and John Pancoast.

Jane, the widow of Thomas Curtis, probably had no issue by her second and third mar- riages. John Pancoast, her last husband, made his will Nov. 30, 1694, wherein he stated that he was of Mansfield, Burlington County; proved Dec. 22, 1694, and mentioned his wife, Jane, and children, who were by his first wife. J., Friends' Records, in the pos . session of Miss Anna M. North, Trenton, N. J.

In 1692, he was Constable of Mansfield.

1695-6. He died, leaving a will, wherein he mentioned:
