Of these children, John Bowne Crawford married Caroline Field and had James G. Craw- ford, Esq., who, at the age of eighty-six, in the year 1880, supplied me with the following interesting information. The Bowne-Crawford estate was originally the site of an Indian town. In the course of ploughing the fields many bones and relics have been upturned. He, when young, as his ancestors before him, made playmates of the young Indians, the last of whom, in manhood, was known as Indian Dick. The site of the present farm was part of a grant to the Bownes of, originally, over ten thousand acres.
Some of the kinsmen of John Bowne, the Third, had extensive grants along the shore, near Chingaroras. By an agreement they exchanged residences, those inland moving to the shore, and those at the shore moving inland. They passed each other midway on the road and it being Friday, a disgruntled negro servant, of whom they had great numbers, predicted a short stay and such proved the case, for on the following Friday, they repassed each other returning to their former homes, both content to annul the bargain.
64 MARY STILLWELL, daughter of Dr. Richard Stillwell and his wife, Mary Bowne, 23, daughter of Obadiah Bowne, 9, was born 1735, and died, Aug. 27, ISIo, aged 75 years and 3 months. Her remains lie adjacent to her parents in the old Presbyterian Churchyard. in Middletown, N. J. She was never married. Her will, recorded at Frechold, distributed her estate as follows: The will was written June 28, 1810; and proved Sept. 27, 1810.

72 JOHN BOWNE, son of Obadiah Bowne, 25, known as Capt. John Bowne, of Whale Creek, was born Feb. 9, 1751; died, Sept. 29, 1797, aged forty-seven years, and was buried, as Capt. John Bowne, in the Provost Burying ground, Morgan, N. J. Nov. 27, 1775, he mar- ried Johanna Provost. Reformed Church, Freehold, N. J. She was born about 1758-60, and was the daughter of John Provost and Mary Ackland, who was a son of "Ready Money" David Provost and Johannah Rinders.
John Bowne was a farmer, of Dover, Middlesex County, at the time of his marriage. Johanna (Provost) Bowne married, second, Zimri Bennet, June 4, 1804, and was sued by her Bowne children for squandering their father's estate. See account in Surrogate's Office, New Brunswick, N. J.

146 Louisa Bowne, born Aug. 6, 1797; married James Provost, and died, Apr. 14, 1816, aged nineteen years. James Provost married, second, Rebecca Denise.
A careful scrutiny of the bible record of John Bowne, 72, and of the inscriptions on the tombstones in the Provost Burying ground, shows a number of discrepancies. I see no way to reconcile them.
74 OBADIAH BOWNE, son of Obadiah Bowne, 25, was born Nov. 26, 1754, and was a merchant, in New York City. He married, about 1780, Elizabeth, daughter of Zachary Vandyke, of Staten Island, to which place he removed, and probably died 1820-1825. He had two children as per brother's will, in 1803, and one subsequently.
Obadiah Bowne's place of business was first at 7, then 23 Willian St., New York City, under the name of O. & A. Bowne & Co. Upon the death of Andrew Bowne, 1804, the firm was dissolved and Obadiah retired to a farm on the North Shore of Staten Island.
Joseph Bainbridge was a Captain in the U. S. Navy. His daughter married a Mr. Taylor, a banker, residing in Cairo, in the West.

BOWNE OF MONMOUTH COUNTY

Dr. J. E. Stillwell, Dear Sir :-
I rec'd your mem. as to Bowne family. I have, at present, no interest in verifying or completing it. When I wanted it, you took no notice of my letter and the weather is hot and I expect to take my vacation soon and am busy.
A Mrs. Weatherby, of Trenton, has gone into the Bowne family history at length. I am inclined to think, without consulting my notes, that some of your facts are wrong. The Kean and Seaman families are both in Elizabeth. Dr. Pitney was not regarded with veneration by the Bownes and Provoosts. I have heard that they refused to allow him to be buried in the family graveyard and threatened to throw his body over the cliff if it was attempted. He was supposed to have married for money only. I am glad to hear that his picture is reputable.
If you are on subject of early doctors, I am descended from the earliest of them all: Dr. Robinson, of Rahway, and Dr. Winans, his son-in-law, of Elizabeth, who was the surgeon of my great grand-father's regi- ment during the Revolution.
How do you know that John Provoost married Mary Ackland? It is so given in Provoost genealogy but I don't know what proof sustains it.
Yours truly
GEO. C. THOMAS.
