Letter written by Samuel Holmes, Jan. 13, 1738/9 from Middletown, Monmouth Co. East Jersey, to his cousin Nathaniel Borden in Barbadoes.


"My father's name is Obadiah Holmes, the eldest son of Jonathan & Sarah Holmes who lived the latter part of their days in Rhodisland and my Grand Mother's maiden name was Sarah Borden.


My father and uncle Jonathan are both in health & my father is 72 years of age & uncle is about 57 years old.

"Memento-I find that my Grandfather Jonathan Holmes of Late Rhodisland (or formerly) decd, his will was proved 22nd day of November 1713 So that it is Likely that he departed this Life Sometime this year and perhaps in October 1713 -- and not long after my said grandfather's deceafe I heard my father say that if his father had lived until Such a time which now I have forgot, his father would have been fouricore years old, So that he was nigh 80 years old when he departed this life, he was born in Lancafhire County old England; my father Obadiah Holmes departed this Life on the 3rd day of April 1745, aged 78 years 3 months & a few days.


My father told me not long before he was sick with that Sicknefs of which he dyed, that he thought his father was nigh 30 years old before he married, altho' he could not Remember certain that his father told him so. My father told me he was born at Graves End on Long Ifland; called Nafau Ifland in New York Colony." "Scunk weed is good to cure the Rhumatifm by applying the Leaf to the place affected."


"Directions to cure a cough and Inward weakneis Viz :- Take a hand full of wormwood i handfull of hoar hound-i handfull of sage, put Into 3 quarts of water, well boyled together. then strain the Liquor -- To every gallon of Liquor ad i quart of Mollafses then boyl it again and then work it with Eaft and when

well worked put the Liquor Into bottles, corked up tite. obferve Sometimes a root of allowcompane is pu! Into the above Ingredients take half a pint of this Liquor every morning."


"Take the root of bay berry bufhes, firtt Scrape off the out Side bark then scrape (but not peal) the Infide bark, and Stew the Infide bark Moderately In water and that Liquor is Good to bathe a Sprained part, then take of that Scraped Root, so Stewed and cover the Sprained part-


by experience found to be good."

The following record, fuller, and probably more accurate than the preceding, is from an old leaf, much worn and blotted, belonging to Edward, son of the late Joseph Taylor, of Middletown, N. J.

Memorandum that


Samuel Holmes, Son of Obadiah Holmes and alice Holmes, of Middletown, was born on the 27th day of april, 1704. And Ifuldah Mott, Daughter of Gershom Mott and Sarah Mott, of Sd Middletown, was born on the 31st day of october, 1709.


And be it Remembered that the Sd Samuel Holmes was Married unto Sd Huldah Mott on the 7th day of December, 1731.


The age of their Children


Obadiah Holmes was born on friday about 5 a clock in the after noon on the 19th day of September, 1732. Sarah Holmes was born on thursday about half an hour after [before? worn] Eleven a Clock in the fore noon on the 19th day of September, 1734, [last figure of date worn].


Samuel Holmes was born on the first day of the week a little before Sunrise on the 19th day of Sep- tember, 1736.


James Holmes was born on wensday about ten o Clock at night the 31st day of January, 1738/9.


Asher Holmes was born on thursday about half an hour after Eleve o Clock in fornoon on the 5th day of fabruary, 1740/1.


Mary Holmes was born on tuesday about break of Day on 15th day of fabruary, 1742/3.


John Holmes was born on Monday a Little before Sunrise on the 8 [3? blurred] day of July, 1745.


Elisha Holmes was born on friday between 8 and 9 oclock the fore noon on the first day of July, 1748.


Gershom Mott Holmes was born on Saturday about two oclock in the fore noon on the Sixt day of oc- tober, 1750.


Jonathan Holmes was born on Saturday a Little before ten [worn] aClock in the fore noon on the 24th day of march, new Stile, 175- [1752/3: old style 1753].


william Saltar, Son of Joseph & Sarah Saltar, was born about Six a clock in the morning on Saturday January :, [?], 1757.


Huldah Holmes died on Saturday September the 4 day at quarter after 3 oClock in the afternoon 128; Aged Seventy-four years Nine months and 24 days.

James Holmes was married to Helena Lawrence the first Day of the week, the 22 of June, 1765/6, at 72 hour past 9 in the morning; by the Revd Mr. Morgan Edwards of Philadelphia.


James Holmes Departed this Life November 23, 1769, at ten minutes past ten Oclock at Night Aged 30 years, 9 months & 12 Days.


Helena Holmes Departed this Life 6 of July, 1769, About 10 OClock at Night.


John Lawrence Holmes, son of yt above said James & Helena Holmes Departed this Life march ye 8 [3?], 1708.


Samuel Holmes, son of Samuel & Huldah, Departed this life July 1, [?], 1773, fifteen minutes after foure o clock in the morning aged 36 years, 9 months.


Elisha Holmes, (Son of Samuel and IIuldah Holmes) Departed this Life about Sun Rise on the 20th Day of December, anno: Domm: 1786, aged 38 years, five months & 9 days. [Elsewhere "about 7 o clock in the morn- ing aged 38 years, 5 months & 19 Days. "]


58 MARY HOLMES, daughter of Obadiah Holmes, 11, died Oct. 1749; married, in 1735, James, son of Gershom and Sarah (Clayton) Mott, born 1707; died 1787.

59 JOHN HOLMES, son of Obadiah Holmes, 11, born 1708; died, Sept. 15, 1758, aged 45 years (?); married Mary Ketcham, born July 17, 1720; died, Jan. 2, 1811, aged go, 5, 15. They are both buried in Holmdel Baptist Churchyard.


If John Holmes was born 1708, and died 1758, he would have been 50 years and not 45 years old at the date of his death, as set forth above. I do not attempt to reconcile the dis- crepancy.


Inventory of John Holmes, of Middletown, personal estate, taken by Richard Crawford, Jr., and William Crawford, Sept. 27, 1758, amounted to over £2500.


He was rich in cattle and grain; had a generous household furnishing and there was enumerated among his effects :


"one silver tankard, six teaspoons, twelve large spoons and a watch all silver" £32: 0:0


"to a Sword and a Screach 0:15:0 "to Silver Buckles and Clasps and Gold Buttens & Ring" 3: 0:0 16 cows and a bull; 75 sheep and 52 other animals.

He never married; was a methodical man, and left an interesting diary. He commonly signed his name Jonathan Holmes, Min'.


1737, June I. Will of Jonathan Holmes, son of Jonathan Holmes, of Middletown, yeoman; proved June 29, 1738, gave:


"To Deliverance Bowne, of Freehold, my dearly beloved sister," £300.


"Unto each of my half brothers and sisters" 5 shillings.


"Unto the Baptist Society, of Middletown, whereof John Pew and Garret Wall is Deacons" £4oo. Appointed as executors Samuel Holmes, James Mott and James Tapscott.


Witnesses: Obadiah Holmes, John Holmes, Mary Roberts, [her mark.]


The inventory of his personal estate was taken July 20, 1738, and amounted to £224-9-3, and another inventory Oct. IS, 1738, taken at the house of Samuel Holmes, in Middletown, amounted to £46-5-8. Among the items mentioned were:
