16SS. James Dorset was Constable.
A little north of the center of what was his property, stood the Bethany Meeting House for many years. It has however since been moved a mile and more toward Keyport. The first dwelling on this property was built directly south of the old Dorset burying-ground; the later structure stands today, with the graveyard lying about one hundred yards to the south west of it, and on the east side of the road running south from the site of the Old Bethany Meeting House.
The origin of James Dorset is unknown. He died in or prior to 1721.
It is thought he married after his arrival in this vicinity.

16 JOSEPH DORSET, son of Joseph Dorset, 8, born Sunday, Mch. 7, 1743; died. Apr. 10, 1831, aged 88, 1, 13; married, Jan. 21, 1771, Hannah, daughter of Richard and Susannah (Wall) Burdge. She died, Aug. 26, 1807, aged 63, 7, II; born Feb. 15, 1744.
The farm, the old "Dorset Town" estate, on which Joseph Dorset died was a part of the original tract taken up in 1676 by James; it had descended from sire to son in the line of Joseph until the death of this one, when it passed to his son-in-law Joseph Taylor, and after his death in 1836, it passed out of the family. The first Joseph, (2), appears to have divided up the large tract that his father had left him, appointing to his son James, 10, a farm on the North westerly part, since Murphy's; to John, 9, a farm on the North easterly part, since Gershom Stillwell's; to Samuel, 11, a farm on the South westerly part since Bedle's; to his daughter Martha Herbert, 12, the South easterly part, retaining a part in the centre which was laid as one hundred and forty acres when sold in 1839. The central farm and locality was always called Dorset Town. There formerly stood, in the garret of the old Dorset Mansion, an ancient bedstead with wooden curtains, viz: top, back, head and foot enclosed with panelled work, and sliding doors of the same in front. It had come over with the "first man," and on the cords were spread bare a pelt, the hair having all gone long ago, of the skin of a large bear that the immigrant had killed near his dwelling and appropriated the hide for a bed bottom. They were both destroyed at the clearing of the house by the old family in IS39. (Asher Taylor).

"It was his custom to visit his relatives in Middletown once a year, and he walked every step of the way from Toms River to Middletown. My home, at that time was in Shrewsbury, the town of my birth, and he made it a habit to stop at our place for rest. He had a tall, soldierly bearing and dressed in the Quaker garb, which impressed him on my memory, though I was then a very little girl, 5 or 6 or perhaps 7 years of age." (Letter of Mary P. Dorsett, Mercerville, N. J., Dec. 29, 1899.)
"His descendants now live in Asbury Park, N. J., where one is in the employ of Steinbach & Co., Dry Goods House. Here I purchased some goods; he inquired my name for their delivery, and by giving him my name he revealed his own. I made inquiry as to his ancestors with the above result. This is all I know of that family."
