5 HENRY BOWNE, son of John Bowne, I, was licensed to marry Charity Hoff, of Kingwood, Hunterdon County, N. J., June 30, 1784; both of Hunterdon County, N. J. He married, second, in 1796, Eleanor La Rue. He was a Lieutenant in Col. Maxwell's New Jersey Regiment. He was described as "a large, noble-looking man, dressed in broad brimmed hat, · knee breeches and large shoe buckles." He died, at Charlton, Saratoga County, N. Y., Dec. 25, 1829. He was called Captain from being a sloop captain on the Hudson River.

Joseph Bowne was an enlisted man in the Second Regiment, Dutchess County, N. Y. Militia, during the Revolution. New York in the Revolution. N. Y. State Documents.


Phillipp Bowne was a Lieutenant, in the Sixth Regiment, Dutchess County, N. Y., Militia during the Revolution.


Rodman Bowne was an enlisted man in the Fourth Regiment, New York Line, during the Revolution.


Benjamin Bowne was a Major, during the Revolution. Lists and Indices. Sundry persons whose service is evidenced by receipts on file in the Comptroller's Office, but whose names are not found on papers of any of the regular organizations.

"They were my parents, " wrote Sarah Ann Haynes, sister of Mary Bowne, of Harlem, N. Y., in 1869.

1897, Aug. 19. Rolan C. Bowne, a Republican leader, in Jersey City, was born in Free- hold, N. J. His grandfather, William A. Bowne, was a Justice of the Supreme Court, and his father was one of the best known members of the New Jersey Bar. Rolan C. Bowne is a suc- cessful agent of the Wheeler and Wilson Sewing Machine Company.

*It is not unlikely that Gilbert Bowne, I, was the son of Benjamin Bowne, son of Samuel Bowne and Hannah Smith, born 6mo., 1, 1717, and who married Mary, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Kodman, bora remo., 1. 1716-17. If this is so, he belongs to the Long Island family of Bowne.

5 Thomas B. Bowne ; died unmarried. His will is recorded in Brooklyn, N. Y., dated Jan. 8, 1845; proved June 11, IS47.


6 Rodman Bowne; died 1845; "of the village of Brooklyn." His will, dated July 1, 1832; proved 1847, is recorded in Kings County. He married Catharine Place; no issue. He, with John G. Murphy, invented and patented the horse and team boats, which were used to cross the East River, before the introduction of steam.


He was subsequently one of the owners of Catharine Street ferry, in 1811-1820. 7 Samuel Bowne; died Jan. 10, 1853.


8 Sarah Bowne; married James Paul; no issue.


2 GILBERT BOWNE, son of Gilbert Bowne, I, married Mary Robinson, born Feb. 7, 1771; died, Dec. 21, 1863, aged 92.


Issue living at Norwich, Conn., in 1805.


9 Mary Bowne, born June 1, 1804; married William Dugan.

7 SAMUEL BOWNE, son of Gilbert Bowne, 1, died Jan. 10, 1853; married Sarah Skinner. He was one of the owners of the Catharine Street ferry, in 1811-1820. His will, dated Nov. 23, 1846; proved Jan. 29, 1853, is recorded in Kings County, and gives to his son, Gilbert, his lands at Rodman's Neck, in Pelham.

1728, 8, 3 mo. Mary Bown, widow, and Martin, both of Bristol township, Bucks County, Pa., were married at Falls Meeting.


1746, 16, 11 mo. "Spent the day at my plantation with J. Greenleaf, Jemmy Pemberton, Peter Reeve, Geo. and Sally Mitlin, Debby Morris, Jenny Bound, Peggy Newberry and Bekky Owen. Found an agreeable place to slide on the creek. We went & returned in sleighs, all safe and pleased". Journal of John Smith, of Philadelphia, afterwards the husband of Hannah, daughter of James Logan.


1747. Samuel Bowne was a petitioner for a Township in Bucks County, Pa. He signed his name.


1749, Nov. I. Abraham Bowne and Grace Jones, of Bucks County, Pa., had a license to marry. Trenton Records.

1893, Nov. I. At West Philadelphia, T. Newbold Bowne, of Bustleton, N. J., and Carrie E. Gaskill, of West Philadelphia, were married.

NEW JERSEY


The emigrant ancestor of the New Jersey Brays was the REVEREND JOHN BRAY. a Baptist minister who was settled in Monmouth County as early as 1684. He was a strenuous supporter of the people against the oppressions of the Proprietary Government, and a liberal benefactor of the Baptist Church.


1686, Aug. 24. "John Bray his Eare marke is a crop one the neare Eare and one half peny one the back side of the same Eare and two cuts in the fore part of the Right Eare and his brande marke is I. B. one the Left shoulder." Middletown Town Book.


1686, May 29. He received fifty acres of land on the Hop River from the Governor and Council.


In 1688, he purchased land, near the present village of Holmdel, where he passed the re- mainder of his life, and where some of his descendants live today.


In 1700, he was one of the signers of the petition to King William, asking for the appoint- ment of a competent governor.


1700, Aug. 22. He and others were presented to the Grand Jury "ffor riotously assembling on the 17th of July and assaulting John Stewart high sheriff & Henry Leonard on the path near to the house of Alx' Adam. Beat and greviously wound the said persons, tok ther swords from them brok them carryd them away and keept them to the value of ffive pounds money of this province."

In 1701, a number of citizens of Middletown, among whom was John Bray, thinking their rights were infringed "did traytorously seize ye governor and ye Justices ye Kings attorney General & ye undersheriff and ye Clerke of ye court & keept them close prisoners under a guard from tuesday ye 25th March till ye Saturday following being ye 29th of ye same month & then Releast them."

In 1704, he with Susannah his wife gave land to the Middletown Baptist Church, upon which was built the Church, called in the records "The Upper Meeting House," where services were held alternately with those in Middletown. The present Baptist Church at Holmdel stands where this old building was erected and is still called "Bray's Meeting House" by some of its oldest members.
