A tract called Germantown of 149 A., 54 p., was patented to Jacob Shartle Apr. 10, 1788 in Bern Twp. (Pat. Bk. F-12-269). Another tract called Evesham of 46 A. was patented to him May 19, 1788 (Pat. Bk. P-13- 154).
The old Jacob Schertel place, which was in the family for several generations, was purchased by Orlando F. Berger who was born in 1853. Berger had a sword which was used by Capt. Jacob Schertel in the Revolutionary War. Orlando Berger was the husband of Mary Ann Clauser, daughter of Harrison and Rebecca. This farm is on the north side of Route 22 between Hamburg and Shartlesville. In 1957 the barn bore the name of Orlando Berger.
Jacob Schertel was a Captain in the Revolutionary War, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Company of Berks Co. riflemen in 1777. Other officers were: Col. M. Lindemuth, Ensign Adam Klauser, Ist Lieut. George Albright, 2nd Lieut. George Kaufman. He was also a Captain of the 4th Battalion, 5th Company in 1780 under Col .. Nathan Lutz (Pa. Arch. Ser. 2, Vol. 13:265, 277, 286; Pa. Arch. Ser. 2, Vol. 5:209).
Jacob Schertel, rank Captain, served in Hartley's Continental Regiment. Disability: wounded by a party of Indians, while on actual duty, by a musket ball

which passed through his right ear, which wound caused dizziness and rendered him incapable of following his business, and that he was disabled in 1778 at Muncy Creek (on a list of applicants for pension submitted to the House of Representatives by the Secretary of War, Apr. 25, 1794, printed in the American State Papers, Class 9, p. 101). £ Muncy Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna, near Fort Shamokin, Northumberland County, was the region where Hartley's Regiment under General Sullivan led an expedition against the Indians which was carried north into New York.
Jacob is also recorded as Captain, annual allow- ance, one hundred twenty dollars. The Revolutionary War Pension commenced Sept. 4, 1793, under the Act of June 7, 1785 (Veterans Adm., Wash. D. C.).
Jacob Schertel was also wounded in the Battle. of Princeton, N. J. where he was taken prisoner by the British while laying wounded on the field. He was
taken to a hospital in Philadelphia. Later he was exchanged for a British officer who had been captured by the Americans (Francis Paizley Lee, State Historian, N. J. ).
During the battle of Long Island, Capt. Schertel was stationed with other commands at Perth Amboy, N. J. to prevent a landing there of the troops from the British fleet. While Washington was carrying on his campaign in the region of White Plains, N. Y., Schertel had command of wagon brigades which brought munitions and food to him from Pennsylvania.
