GEORGE LUDWIG NONNENMACHER arrived Oct. 26, 1754, on the brigantine Mary and Sarah from Amsterdam last from
Portsmouth. Franconia, Wurttemberg, Palatinate (Pa. Ger.
Pion. Vol. I:661). He was shown on List A as Ludwig by which name he continued to be known. He lacked two months of being sixteen years of age. His father, Johan Ludwig Nonnenmacher, arrived Sept. 16, 1751, on the ship Nancy from Rotterdam (Pa. Ger. Pion. Vol. I:462). He came from Mahringen, Wurttemberg with his wife, Anna Maria, and the following children: Henrich, b. Apr. 22, 1745; Johan Adam, b. Nov. 17, 1747; Anna Margaret b. Mar. 22, 1750 (Rec. Lutheran Ch., Mahringen, Wurttemberg. Adolf Gerber Lists edited by Dr. Don Yoder, The Pennsylvania German Folklore Society, 1945. 10:197).
Ludwig Nunemacher who arrived in 1754 remained in Germantown with the Johan Ludwig family. He was married there in 1766 and came to Berks County in about 1772.
LUDWIG NUNEMACHER was born Dec. 26, 1739 in Germany; d. Mar. 16, 1815; m. on Sept. 15, 1766 at Germantown to Anna Barbara Weis who was b. Nov. 16, 1745; d. Aug. 17, 1824. Five sons, five daughters (T. S. St. Mich. Ch., Berks Co .; marriage, St. Michael's Evang. Lutheran Ch., Germantown by Pastor Soigt).

G 12:59, conveyed one equal moiety to Richard Peters, and by another indenture 14, 15, December of the same year (Phila. Dd. Bk. H-4:73) con- veyed the other moiety to William Parsons who with Hannah his wife 15 April 1749 granted the same moiety to Richard Peters, who on 7 April 1761 in Bk. A-2:262 recorded at Reading, granted the whole to Daniel Zacharias, who with Anna Elizabeth, his wife, 6 August 1776 for 850 pounds conveyed 219 acres thereof to Ludwig Nunnemacher of Oley District, recorded at Reading Bk. 8-2 : 540, with all houses. At the Berks County Court House is another deed, Deed Bk. 8:437, as follows:

Begin at tree in west bank of Schuylkill River, corner of George Althouse and by the river's several courses 168 p. to post near the upper end of a small stream which forms an island, then crossing the stream and head of same island and another stream S 64 deg. E 15 p. to the head of a large Island.
2. Down the east side of said larger Island 164 p. to a post near the lower end of said Island.
3. . . . S 87 degrees West ... to land of Nicholas Souder, now John Souder.

The most interesting of the deeds, which shows when Ludwig moved to the St. Michael's Church area, is recorded at Berks Co. C. H. Deed Bk. 8:440 as follows:
7 April 1785, Conrad Allweine of Bern Township, Berks County, and Catharine, his wife, to Ludwig Nunnemacher of same, yeoman. Whereas the Proprietors conveyed to Christian Yoder by patent 9 Dec. 1766 tract of land of 44 acres (Pat. Bk. AA-B:131); Christian Yoder and, Barbara, his wife 10 Aug. 1768 conveyed to Jacob Allweine 15 acres of said tract.
Whereas the Proprietors 17 Aug. 1768 to Jacob Allweine 195 acres of land in Berne bounded by land laid out for a church, Philip Faust and Jacob Meyer (Pat. Bk. AA-11:4); Jacob Allweine and, Margaret, his wife 14 Aug. 1776 conveyed same to Conrad Allweine.
7 April 1785 Conrad Allweine of Bern Twp. for 200 pounds conveyed to Ludwig Nunnemacher of same 50 acres part of 209 acres surveyed to Jacob Allweine, father of Conrad, 14 Aug. 1776 who granted same to Conrad.

The Jacob Allweine tract was just south of St. Michael's Church with most of it in what is now Upper Bern but a small part extending into Tilden Twp.
Ludwig Nunnemacher had a tract surveyed Mar. 29, 1790 for 8 acres, 9 perches. Neighbors were: Ludwig Faust and Ludwig Seaman. On the north it joined another tract of Ludwig Nunnemacher (Bk. A-41:218).
Ludwig Nunemacher appears on the tax lists of Bern Twp., 1779-1785 (Pa. Arch. Ser. 3, Vol. 18:203, 322, 450, 578). Census 1790, Bern Twp. shows Ludwig with three males over 16, one male under 16, three females.
LUDWIG NUNNEMACHER took the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity before Henry Christ, Esq. Oct. 15, 1777 (Bk. D, Vol. 1:16, Hist. Soc. of Berks Co.).
The Nunnemachers and Geisers were related which is shown by documents found in the Orphans Court Bk. 3:256 at the Berks Co. Court House as follows :
16 November 1786 Petition of Jacob and Elizabeth Jeiser (Geiser) minor children over 14 of Joachim Jeiser late of Northumberland County, yeoman, deceased, who pray for guardian, Ludwig Nunnemacher named by court as guardian.
Petition of Ludwig Nunnemacher, brother-in-law of Joachim Jeiser of Northumberland County, de- ceased, stating that he died seized of some personal estate leaving issue, six children, one of whom, Peter, is yet under 14 years of age, and desires a guardian. Court appoints Ludwig Nunnemacher, petitioner, as guardian.

At Jacob's Lutheran Church, near Pinegrove, appears Philip Keiser b. Feb. 17, 1771 in Pinegrove; d. Mar. 18, 1804. Eva Kayser was a communicant here. Peter Keiser received War. No. 233, Nov. 21, 1785, located on the Little Schuylkill about 1-1/2 miles above land of Francis Parvin over the Blue Hills, Berks Co. (Sur. Bk. C-91-281).
The Will of Ludwig Nunnemacher written in German is recorded in Book C: 70 at the Berks County Court House. Made Dec. 31, 1814 probated April 12, 1816. Abstract follows :
In the Name of the Holy Trinity, Amen. Since I, Ludwig Nunnemacher, Bern Township, Berks County, have considered the frailty of my mortal body ....
First, I command my immortal soul into the hands of that God from which I received it; my body I leave to my descend- ants that they may give it a resting place among those of my faith, according to the Christian custom.
Secondly, I bequeath to my three grandchildren by my daughter, MARIA, 200 pounds in money. My son, MICHAEL NUNNEMACHER, is to pay 100 pounds to said three children of JOHN LOEB. The remaining 100 pounds, said three children are to receive from two notes which have been transferred to them to wit: the first and the last notes (mortgages) made out to me by my son, JACOB NUNNEMACHER. Payment to be made after the death of myself and wife.

Thirdly, I bequeath to the heirs of my son, CHRISTOFEL NUNNEMACHER, 50 pounds which my son Christofel received long ago ... Furthermore, said heirs of my son, CHRISTOPHEL, are to receive 100 pounds in addition to be paid by my son, JACOB .
Fourthly, ... my furniture and the rest of my possessions shall remain together until after the death of myself and wife. Thereafter, ... proceeds of the sale are to be equally divided into seven equal parts, which will go to my several children or their heirs.

On the above record are written notations of the date of her marriage to Jacob Nunemacher and both of their dates of death.
Jacob came into the possession of the land owned by his father, Ludwig. He gave notes to his brothers and sisters in payment for the same, which had not been paid in full at the time of his death in 1822. Letters of Administration (Berks Co. C. H., Bk. 9: 354) on estate of Jacob Nunemacher late of Bern Twp. granted to John Loaman 20 October 1825, follows: Nov. 11, 1825, Petition of John Loaman, administrator of Jacob Nunemacher, late of Upper Bern who died interstate seized of plantation of 90 acres and messuage thereon, adjoining Michael Hollenback, Joseph Savage, Anna Naftsinger and others.
His personal property is insuf- ficient to pay his debts, petitioner, therefore, prays the court for order of sale. Ordered to be held 17 Dec. 1825. Sold to Henry Goettel for $1062 on 6 Jan. 1826, he being the highest and best bidder. Sale confirmed 10 Mar. 1826 (Orphans Court Bk. 9:62).
This sale does not appear to have been recorded under Jacob Nunemacher's nor Henry Goettel's estate. Jacob's wife was a sister of Henry Goettel.

According to The Reading Eagle of Mar. 30, 1880, William Nunemacher died at Shartlesville, pneumonia, and of May 9, 1880, Esther Nunemacher died at Shartlesville, dropsy, rheumatism in late years .
William Nunemacher was at one time a wealthy man, and he and his wife lived in a large, brick house near the center of Shartles- ville. However, their grandchildren remember these gray-eyed grandparents best when they were living a short distance from town.

F. BENJAMIN NUNEMACHER (Jacob2, Ludwig1), son of Jacob and Philipina: b. July 13, 1812; d. May 28, 1860; m. Nov. 3, 1845 to Sarah Tobias who was b. Sept. 14, 1823 in Bern Twp .; d. Mar. 18, 1849. Michael Wagner and wife, Elizabeth, acted as sponsors for Benjamin (St. Mich. Ch.). Note: Sarah was the dau. of Johan Tobias and wife, Margaretha, nee Haefner.
Benjamin owned the brick house at the east end of Shartlesville, built by George Shartle.

He was postmaster in 1852; United States Representative 1856-1858; United States Senator
1859-1860. He died while in the Senate. His funeral at St. Michael's Church was attended by a number of Washington dignitaries.
Benjamin owned the mill west of Shartles- ville as well as a number of farms, one of which was later owned by a Reil or Ruhl, another by Schloppig near the town.

James Nunemacher gave four acres to Friedens Church, Shartlesville in 1875.

V. CATHARINE NUNEMACHER (Ludwig1), dau. of Ludwig and Barbara: b. ca. 1775; m. in 1797 to George Hix who
was b. Dec. 22, 1770; d. Jan. 3, 1850. Catharine has no tombstone at St. Michael's but appears on the burial records which give no dates. George is on the burial records with dates given. They are both buried in the Old Cemetery, Catharine Row 6, No. 9; George Row 2, No. 1. The date of marriage is deducted from tax lists. George appears as single in
