II. GEORGE HICKS (HIX) (Conrad-), son of Conrad and Anna Maria: b. Dec. 22, 1770; d. Jan. 3, 1850; m. in 1797 to Catharine Nunemacher who died after 1840 (St.

Mich. Ch. Burial Rec.). Marriage deducted from tax lists, George, single in 1796 and married in 1797. Der Readinger Adler: January 3, 1850 in Upper Bern, George Hix aged 79 years, 13 days.
The History of Berks County, page 1135, states that George Hix married Miss Nunemacher. That her name was Catharine is shown in a Deed recorded at the Berks Co. C. H. Deed Bk., Vol. 33:85. A property of 34 acres, 54 perches in Lower Bern Twp. was conveyed by George Hix and his wife, Catharine, to one Daniel Heister on April 2, 1822 which property Hix had pur- chased from Henry Miller in 1819.
Catharine was the daughter of Ludwig Nunemacher and Anna Barbara nee Weiss. Ludwig's son, Jacob, came into possession of his father's land, and gave notes to his sisters and brothers in payment of their shares which were not paid in full at the time of his death in 1825. The Administration Bk. 9:354, Berks Co. C. H. shows Letters of Administration on estate of Jacob Nunemacher late of Bern Twp. granted to John Loaman, Oct. 20, 1825. Original papers in accounting of estate of Jacob Nunemacher stated to be pursuant to order of Orphaus Court Aug. 11, 1826, gives the name of Catharine Hix. This proves that she was the sister of Jacob, therefore, the daughter of Ludwig. See Nunemacher line.
Catharine Hix nee Nunemacher is listed on the
burial records of St. Michael's but no dates are given.
196
She is buried in the Old Cemetery Row 6, No. 9 but no dates are on the marker.
A sale recorded in Deed Bk. C-3-218, Berks Co. C. H. is as follows:
June 3, 1828, GEORGE HIX of Upper Tulpehocken Twp., Berks Co. to MICHAEL HIX for $55.00, two sets of tools belonging to a trade of blacksmith, to wit: two anvils, two bellows, one great horn pool and one smaller one, two screw stocks, two big hammers, two sets of tongs and a smaller hammer, and the present stock of wooden coals amounting by estimation to 300 bushels, all now being in the messuage and blacksmith shop in Upper Tulpehocken Township now in the occupation of GEORGE HIX. Rec'd. Jan. 4, 1830.
George Hix lived in Lebanon Co. (then Dauphin); in Bern Twp., Berks Co .; in Naftzingertown, near Shartles- ville, during his last years where he owned fifteen acres and a blacksmith shop. His son, Joseph, bought the place, and there his children were born. George
Hix spoke English. He was an assiduous reader,
especially of religious books some of which were inherited by his grandaughter, Emmelina Hix Potteiger. Census 1800, Bern Twp .; George Hix: one male, 26 to 45; one male, 10 to 16; one male under 10, one female, 26 to 45; one female under 10. Male 10 to 16 probably was a relative since it could not be his issue.
Census 1810, Dauphin Co., Annville Twp., George Hicks : one male, 26 to 45; one male 10 to 16; two
197
males under 10; one female, 26 to 45; one female 10 to 16; one female under 10.
Census 1820, Lower Bern Twp., George Hix: one male 45 or over; two males under 10; one female, 45 or over; four females, 10 to 16; three females, under 10. Two sons under 10 are Joseph and William. Daughters
under 10 are Esther, Hannah, Sarah. Daughters, 10 to 16 are Elizabeth, Catharine, Rebecca and another not known to me.
Census 1830, Upper Bern shows George Hix as having two sons, 15 to 20; one daughter, 5 to 10; two daugh- ters, 10 to 15.
Census 1840, Upper Bern, George Hix: one male 60 to 70; one male, 20 to 30; one male, 5 to 10; one female, 60 to 70; one female, 20 to 30; one female, 15 to 20. This indicates that Catharine was living in 1840. George died in 1850 before the Census was taken.
