Runckel - Runkle
Runckels in America claim descent from the Runckels that lived near Limburg on the Lahn River which flows into the Rhine near Koblenz. The Castle Runckel was on the left bank of the River about four miles above Limburg. It was built in 1059, and around it grew a town known as Runckel. The place was destroyed during the wars of 1634 when Germany invaded by Spain and Austria. Most of the people fled was
leaving only 270 inhabitants behind. However, the castle was rebuilt in 1642, and was occupied by the Lords of Runckel until 1825. Since then it has been used as the town hall of Runckel (The Runckle Family by Ben. van D. Fisher, New York, 1899).
Limburg was in the Lower Palatinate of 1700 or very close to its border. Although the Runckels in America may or may not have come directly from the Burg of Runckel, they in all probability were descendants of some branch of the Runckels on the Lahn River. Migration in the German states can be understood when one takes into consideration
272
the conditions that existed at that time. That a large landowner or even a nobleman could have been struck down economically is not so surprising, for similar situations have occurred in European countries during this twentieth century, even to the extent where members of nobility have immigrated to America.
NICHOLAS RUNCKEL, aged 27, and JOHAN JACOB RUNCKEL, aged 17, arrived Sept. 2, 1743, on the ship Loyal Judith, James Cowes, Capt., from Rotterdam. Palatines (Pa. Ger. Pion. Vol. I:335). JACOB RUNCKEL, aged 27, arrived Sept. 17, 1748 on the ship Hampshire.
NICHOLAS RUNCKEL, b. 1716; d. 1774; m. Elizabeth. He Was issued the following warrants in Bern Twp. : No. 57, Jan. 16, 1765, patented to his son, Jacob, Jan. 17, 1812 (Sur. Bk. C:183; Pat. Bk. H:6); No. 96, Feb. 15, 1774, patented to himself Feb. 19, 1774 (Pat. Bk. AA-14-183). Nicholas bought a tract of land from Sebastian Hunsrick on Jan. 18, 1765.
Nicholas Runckel appears on the Bern Twp. tax lists of 1754 and 1759 (Hist. of Berks Co., p. 1128). He appears on the Bern Twp. tax lists 1767-1779 (Pa. Arch. Ser. 3, Vol. 18:81, 111, 203, 451). Nicholas knew the art of weaving. The husband of his granddaughter, Magdalena, also wove. He made a spread with his name, John Spatz, 1837, woven
into it. This is in my possession.
The Runckels were of the Reformed faith, although a few of their issue were baptized by Lutheran ministers, probably because there were no Reformed available. -
