Spatz - Spotts

Spatz families lived in the region of Nuremberg and Regensburg, Bavaria during earlier centuries. Wilhelmus Spatz born April 22, 1656, married to Anna Maria Haessel, lived at Regensburg. Two of his children were Matthew and Catharina, but since about 1713 no entries of Spatzes were made in the registers. Because of an epidemic at this period and also because of constant wars, the Spatz families may have migrated to other German states. Some Spatzes settled in the region of Sollingen from whence they immigrated to America.

MICHAEL SPATZ arr. Oct. 4, 1752, on the ship Neptune, Capt. John Mason, from Rotterdam, last from Cowes (Pa. Ger. Pion. Vol. I:494). On this same ship was Conrad Schneider whose daughter, Margaretta, married Michael's son, Valentine.

Michael Spatz appears on the Reading tax lists, 1767- 1784 (Pa. Arch. Ser. 3, Vol. 18:246). Census 1790, Reading, Michael Spatz, Sr .: one male over 16, one female over 16. His children were grown. of his issue follow.

I. MICHAEL SPATZ (Michael-), son of Michael, b. Apr. 4, 1764 at Reading; d. Sept. 6, 1851; m. ca. 1790 to Catharine. No issue. He appears on Census 1790, Reading as Michael Spatz, Jr. Census 1840, shows Michael Spatz as drawing a pension at the age of 78. The Revolutionary War Pension Application, S3957, Pa. S. C., sea service gives Michael's birth as Apr. 4, 1764 born in Reading, Berks Co., Pa. He enlisted as a private in 1778 in Col. Valentine Echert's Pa. Regiment. He was a marine on board S. C., and was captured near New York. He served 18 months on the prison ship Old Jersey.

Michael Spatz, Jr. was believed to have been the last Revolutionary War soldier in Reading according to the Readinger Adler.

The Will of Michael Spatz, Reading, was proved Sept. 1851 (Berks Co. C. H.). Abstract follows :

Mentioned his wife, Catharine, who received home at the south- west corner of 8th and Franklin Sts., also tract of 32 acres with house on the Neversink Road purchased from George M. Keim. After Catharine's death, "the estate shall go to the two sons of my nephew, MICHAEL; GEORGE and MICHAEL. It not being known where George is then Michael shall receive all of it." Codicil added June 5, 1846, gave entire estate to Michael, son of his newphew, Michael.

II. VALENTINE SPATZ (Michael-), son of Michael : b. 1761; d. Oct. 18, 1850. First wife, Margretha Schneider b. Aug. 8, 1756; d. Nov. 25, 1804 aged 48 yrs., 4 mos.

who is buried next to her parents, Conrad and Philip- ina Schneider (Zacharias Coll., Bern Ch., Bern Twp.). See Schneider line. Second wife, Margaretha Helhof, b. July 14, 1782; d. Dec. 29, 1865. Buried next to Valentine, Bern Ch.

Valentine Spatz appears on the tax lists Bern Twp. 1785-1825 (Hist. Soc. of Berks Co.). In 1788 he owned 200 acres. Census 1790, Bern Twp., Valentine Spatz: two males over 16; four males under 16; two females. Census 1800: one male 26 to 45; one male 16 to 26; three males 10 to 16; one male under 10; one female 26 to 45; one female 16 to 26; two females under 10. Census 1810: two males over 45; one male between 16 and 26; one male under 10; one female 26 to 45; two females 10 to 16; one female under 10. Census 1830 : one male 60 to 70; one male 20 to 30; one male 10 to 15; two males 5 to 10; one female 40 to 50; one female 15 to 20. Census 1850: Valentine 90; Margaret 70. Valentine does not appear as a pensioner on the 1840 Census. No war record has been found.

Recorded at the Berks Co. C. H. in the Dd. Bk.

13:188 on July 13, 1788, is the following:

Conrad Schnyder of Bern Twp. to Valentine Spatz of the same .... Whereas, the Supreme Executive Council by patent dated 8 November 1786 confirmed to Conrad Schneyder land called Schneyder's Rejoice in Bern Twp. of 201 acres .... Now for 640 pounds the tract is con- veyed with buildings and

253

improvements. . . Recorded 2 March 1793. Witness : John Spayd.

Deed Bk. 29:84. Berks Co. C. H. Sept. 28, 1811. Valentine Spatz of Bern and Margaret, his wife, to Michael Spatz of same, farmer, for 200 pounds, messuage, tenement, and tan yard, and land in Bern Twp. of 10 acres, 13 perches, part of 201 acres which Conrad Schneider 13 July 1788 to Valentine Spatz, recorded Book 13:199, bounded by lands of Philip Hehn, road, and Valentine Spatz.

According to the Census of 1800 Valentine Spatz and his first wife had at least five sons, and at least three daughters. Because the early Bern Church records are not available (probably lost), definite proof of their issue is difficult. However, Spatzes found in Bern, Upper Bern, and Centre Townships before 1850 were undoubtedly descendants of Valentine Spatz. Since the issue of the second wife are known, the other Spatzes of this generation and in this locality, must be the issue of the first wife. Issue of the first wife, Margaret nee Schnyder, follows : Issue :

A. GEORGE SPATZ (Val.2, Michael'), son of Valentine:

b. ca. 1775. Census 1800, Bern Twp. : one male 26 to 45; one male under 10; one female 26 to 45. Tax list Bern Twp. 1808 shows George Spatz as single, possibly a widower.
