1796. Catharine was the sister of Jacob Nunemacher as proven by the Original Papers in accounting of Jacob's estate at the Berks Co. Court House, Aug. 11, 1826, therefore, she was Ludwig's daughter. She may have been born in Bern Twp. where there seems to be a lack of records of this period of the 1700's.

CHRISTOPHER WEISS arrived Sept. 20, 1738 at the age of 17, on the ship Friendship, Henry Beech, Com. (Pa. Ger. Pion. Vol. 1:226).


He first lived in Philadelphia, moved to the eastern part of Berks Co. and later to Bern Twp.


CHRISTOPHER WEISS was b. 1721 in Germany; d. 1787 in Bern Twp .; m. Christina.


He appears on the following tax lists of Berks Co. : Cumru Twp., 1767, 130 acres; Alsace Twp., 1779, no land; District and Bern Twps., 1780; Bern Twp., 1781-1784, 150 acres; Oley Twp. 1785 (Pa. Arch. Ser. 3, Vol. 18:32, 181, 324, 352, 452, 710, 774).


Christopher Weiss owned land in Bern Twp. from 1772 to 1777 (Berks Co. Dd. Bk. B-3-221). He sold his land to his

son-in-law, Ludwig Nunemacher, on Nov. 22, 1777, which he had purchased from Benjamin Lightfoot on June 5, 1772.


The Will of Christopher Weiss of Bern Twp., Berks Co. was made Dec. 12, 1786, and probated Feb. 24, 1787. It was written in German (Abstracts of Wills of Berks Co., Gen. Soc. of Pa.). Abstract follows :


Provides for wife, CHRISTINA. To eldest son, JOHN; 2nd son, PETER; 3rd son, PHILIP; eldest daughter, MARIA BARBARA. Each one an obligation of 34 pounds payable May 27, 1787. Real estate to be sold and out of the proceeds, daughter, ELIZA- BETH, and YOUNGEST DAUGHTER shall each receive an equal amount as the others. Remainder to be divided in SIX equal shares among my six children.


Executors : son, JOHN WEISS, and Daniel Zacharias. Witnesses : Philip Fuchs and Jacob Fisher.

Goettel


HENRICH GOETTEL arrived in 1785, however, a Peter Goettel was the first Goettel to appear in northwest Berks County. He received a warrant June 15, 1753 in Bethel Township. Some of his line is found in Dauphin County. According to a marker, the first person buried at St. Michael's Church was Hattie Goettel b. Aug. 5, 1758; d. Aug. 22, 1766. She lost her life by lightening. Her tomb- stone was erected by Steely Bros., a gift to St. Michael's Church.


HENRICH GOETTEL arrived on Sept. 5, 1785, on the ship Favorite, Capt. Nicolaus Vallance, Family No. 36 (Pa. Ger. Pion. Vol. 3:10). The family is listed as follows : HENRICH GOETTEL; PHILLIPINA; CHARLOTTA; PHILIPINA, JUN .; CHRISTIAN; FREDERICA; ELIZABETH; HENRY; LOUIS.


HENRY GOETTEL was born in Germany; d. Apr. 1807 in Brunswick Twp., Schuylkill Co. (at that time Berks); m. Phillippina Gracmann.


Henry Gottel, Sr. owned land jointly in Brunswick Twp. with Christopher Wagner and Wagner's son, Philip, both from St. Michael's region. Christopher died in 1799 leaving his


share to Philip. Warrants Nos. 124, 125, 126 were issued to them April 24, 1792 for 400 A., 200 A., 300 A. respectively. Henry Goettel received War. No. 147 for 350 A., June 11, 1794. Warrants Nos. 124 and 147 were patented to Valentine Wagner on Feb. 7, 1823. He was the brother of Philip.


Henry Goettel was a teacher at St. John's Church, Ham- burg, and later at Zions Church, Brunswick Twp.,

Secondly, I give and bequeath to my dear wife, PHILLIPINA, of the land which I have in Norwegian Township consisting of ten acres, three perches less than five hundred acres, and that the same shall be sold by my Executors, and that 100 pounds shall be payable interest for my said Wife which interest she shall accrue yearly during her life. After her death the same 100 pounds shall pass to all my children. Furthermore, I bequeath her ... such furniture that she wants and also one cow, two hogs, ten bushels of wheat ... the outstanding School Money and what the Church Wardens have .... Henry and Maria Goettel lived in Upper Bern Twp. until about 1835 when they moved to Wayne Co., Indiana. Henry bought his brother-in-law's farm, that of Jacob Nunemacher.


The Will of Henry Goettel was made Mar. 19, 1861 and probated Dec. 18, 1862, Centre Twp., Wayne Co., Indiana (Bk. 4:147). An abstract follows:


Mentions his two sons, WILLIAM and JOSEPH; heirs of son-in-law, SOLOMON WALTZ; son-in-law, JOHN HOOVER; son-in-law, JACOB WAGNER; son-in-law, WILLIAM NUNEMACHER who "shall have his part in money if he does not move to this country. Hennig - Henno - Haney - Henne


John Conrad and Hieronymus Henne were early settlers of Bern Twp., Berks County, however, the Hieronymus branch left Bern before 1785 and finally settled in what is now Centre County. JOHN CONRAD HENNE b. Oct. 10, 1731; came from Weibsheim in 1754; m. Sept. 9, 1764 to Catharine E. Madern who was b. Jan. 26, 1744; d. Oct. 21, 1830 (T. S. St. Mich. Ch .; marriage, Rev. John Casper Stoever). Conrad probably arrived in the fall of 1753.


Note: Catharine Elizabeth was the dau. of John Adam Mattern who with his wife, Magdalena, and sons, George, Jacob, and Goetz, arrived Sept. 16, 1751. John Adam


appears on the tax list of Bern Twp. in 1765. He died Apr.


1774.


The son, George, settled in Earl Twp., Lancaster


County. He married Catharine Schupp. Their son, George, was b. Jan. 30, 1765, in Bern Twp., Berks Co. on the Northkill (New Holland Lutheran Ch. , Lancaster Co. ). £ In an old family Bible (pub. Sauer, 1763) is also given the birth of this son followed by this notation: Auf diese jammer- ville Muhsamme Welt geboren. (Born into this misery-packed, tiresome world.) £ In this same Bible, on a sheet of paper, was found a Gottelbrief or a letter from the godparents who were Conrad Henne and his wife, Catharine Elizabeth, sister of George, the father of George born 1765.

A George Henny received a Warrant in 1796, Bedford Co. No other data found. One of their issue lived in Bern Twp., Berks Co.
