DEDICATED TO THE CHRONIC KNOCKER.
Intelligent criticism is always in order; but there's a whole lot of difference between intel- ligent criticism and just plain "knocking."
There are men, unfortunately, who will fight all progress unless they can stand in the "spot- light;" men who will "knock" any idea or plan they don't originate. And it's about time that we push that sort to the "sidelines," where they belong, and go on with this game with men who are willing to play the game for the game's sake.
We have no patience with the man who lets his petty vanity interfere with his digestion of facts. It's only facts that count in this game: Dealers in General Merchandise Direct Agents for the man and his feelings don't amount to a whoop. And the man who hasn't the courage Mapleton, Utah to face facts and study them, or who wastes his energy getting mad because facts are unpleas- ant, is just the sort who will keep on talking about cooperation, cursing the middlemen, talk- ing like an anarchist about his share of the consumer's dollar-but, when it is time to organ- ize and brace up for a live man's game, he will slip around the corner on some trumped-up engagement. HOW TO MAKE MONEY IN CATTLE INDUSTRY.
Prof. John T. Caine III brings the following report back from Carbon-Emery county round- ups:
Many Utah yearling steers are sold to eastern buyers every year. Big profits can be obtained by fattening them before they are placed on the market. An Emery county bank has made 25 per cent by fattening and marketing cattle, even when they had to pay for all the work. Fattened stock for market is a staple product and always finds a ready sale; which is a sure guarantee to bankers who are anxious to lend money to stock feeders.
Stock feeding must be accompanied by stock improvement. Introduce new blood by bringing in good bulls. Cull out the poor specimens and keep the best. You may start on a small scale and work up. It pays. Start with grades and work into pure breds.
One of the most prosperous cattlemen of Utah is a native of Denmark, who came into the State with little money. He bought land, then grade cattle, then pure bred. One year he took nine car loads of cattle east and brought back one car load of pure bred stock. He now has a business that nets him a yearly income of $12.000.
From 1907 to 1915 the cattle in the U. S. dropped in numbers from 51,500,000 to 37,000,000. Some one must supply this deficit. Let it be Utah.

Introductory
This Farmers and Merchants Directory represents the beginning of a new era in distributing reliable Farm and Business information.
In the past the Utah County Farmer has not known very much about his distant neighbor, but now, at a glance he may know the exact status, location, and products of every farm in the County.
The function of the Farmers and Merchants Directory of Utah County is vastly different from that of other County directories. Hcretofore, direc- tories have served a limited number of people only ; the purpose of this new issue is to serve the masses, generally, as well as the select few, and we guarantee the circulation of this "Guide" to be more than twice that of any other medium, including newspapers, in the county.
This volume endeavors to bring a mass of most valuable information into the very homes of the people, accessible to the housewife, farmers, business and professional men alike. To the farmer it is the only complete "Buyers' Guide" he has ever had; to the business man it is the only exclusive, com- pletely classified Business Directory ever issued in Utah County ; to the public generally, it is the first combined Farmers and Merchants Directory ever issued within the State of Utah.
Every effort has been put forth to effect an accurate compilation of facts. The information found in the farmers' section was obtained directly from the farmer by solicitors and each farmer as he signed his name to the information slip vouched for its correctness.
There is little wonder that some skeptical farmers should refuse to give our representatives the information they asked for and in such cases we had to depend upon their neighbors; therefore, any little discrepancies in the number of acres or products raised, is due to that fact.
The other data to be found in this initial volume, was compiled with the same thoroughness and exactness, from sources which we believe to be abso- lutely dependable; we feel therefore, that it's use will be extensive.
We are particularly indebted to the enterprising business men for their active co-operation with us. This alone should insure the Farmers and Merch- ants Directory of Utah County, a popularity that will make possible an opportunity for unlimited service.
First, by providing a fund of indispensable information that is always accessible ;
Second, by disseminating facts about Utah County that will bring the Farmer and Business man closer together, than ever before; and
Third, by giving to the Farmer, this, his first directory-which is a great step in the development of "The Business of Farming."
