These little farms of 10 or 12 acres in Den. mark, commoniy return the owner $800 to $1,200 profit In addition to family expenses and aii costs of operating.
Farmers, as well as thelr financial friends In town, are vitally Interested in the earning capacity of their business. It is reasonably certain that any business farmer who runs a diversified farm as carefully as the business merchant conducts a store, can clean up a satisfactory income each year; to do this means that the business farmer must keep his place in proper order, and keep strict account of hls expenses as well as what he takes in; this necessitates the keeping of a simple set of books, weil adapted to the locality and kind of farming participated In, just the same as the business merchant keeps track of every iittie thing about his business.
The publishers have in this Farmers Directory endeavored to build a bookkeeping system, simple and yet comprehensive enough to enable the business farmers of Utah county to make a record of all expenses and profit about the farm and we trust every farmer wlii use it.
Intensive, systematic and business like farm- ing, can only be carried on by the intelligent and conservative person, the one who is wiil- Ing to proflt by the success of others-of

course there Is always the type of man who "knows it all" and to him such a book as this will be of littie use.
Many a farmer fails to get the most out of his farm, because he stays at home too closeiy, puts in too many hours a day following the plow, and does not often enough visit good farmers in other parts of the county or state. Furthermore, a man physically exhausted from a iong hard day's work is in no condition to follow and get much out of the literature of his business-"the business of farming"-as reported in farm papers, agricultural reports, books, market-sheets, Farmers Directories, etc.
Success in farming calis for the very best effort in a man along all lines.
The best effort is called for in replanning a farm for profit, and in keeping track of the expenses and profit of the farm now.
The farmer who is dissatisfied with his in- come from the farm needs to think seriously as to whether or not his farm is planned right for the best results, remembering that good farming calis for keeping up with the times in marketing and seiling, at the same time increasing production. In business, experts are paid large salaries for telling the bus-

ness men where there is a leak in their business -for increasing the present efficiency of the business, and planning same to the best ad- vantage.
. It occurs to us that the time for farm ex- perts aiong the same line is not far distant- remembering that there are men who do not know "beans" about raising beans, but they can teli the farmer who raises beans a great deal about seiling them-because that's their business.
The county agent or demonstrator recently engaged in a number of counties in several states, we consider one of the most practicai and valuable factors in the farming situation and a necessity to every county; marketing and seil- ing should and will undoubtedly be given their most earnest attention.
Marketing the farm products is a question of securing adequate returns for our iabors, and with such perishable products as smaii fruits, such as we have in Utah county, the probiem has become a very serious one.
The value of a product at any given time is determined by the law of supply and demand. The consuming ciass of any prescribed district will use but a certain quantity of any product at a value which wili ailow the grower ex- ceptionai remuneration. The demand at such

values will always be within a prescribed limit, as an exceptional value causes any food prod- ucts to become a luxury.
To illustrate: The strawberries on a certain market are seiling freely at 15 cents per box. There is just about an even balance between supply and demand. We wiii suppose that the supply of such fruit on the market be increased 50 per cent. Wiii the entire amount then seli at 15 cents? Most assuredly not!
Drop the price to 1212 cents, however, and the increase in consumption will provide a market for the increased supply, for those who have been eating 15-cent berries will eat more freeiy of this fruit, and some who cannot afford to buy at the higher price will begin to do so at the lower figure.
A stiil greater increase in the quantity of such fruit piaced upon the market will cause a still further deciine in vaiues, in order to maintain an even balance between supply and demand.
To be sure, when united in an association, growers may, through this association, often maintain more equabie vaiues; but the sphere of such influence must aiways be within pres- cribed limits.

The most important factor, perhaps, in dc. moraiizing prices of products, such as smaii fruits, is the farmer grower who has but a small area devoted to their culture, and who seiis the surpius for what can be most readily obtained, by cutting prices to the limit.
If the entire output of such stuff could be handled through an exchange, extreme slumps in values, market conditions extremely annoy- ing to regular growers might at times be avoided, for such extreme lowering of prices is oft times entirely unnecessary to make the demand keep pace with supply.
This manner of disposing of or preventing such undesirable conditions is, however, beset with not a few obstacles. To insure the suc- cess of such a plan requires exceptional ability on the part of the promotors.
This Directory is published with a view of heiping the farmer better his position. Of late, there is a widespread movement toward diversi- fied and intensive farming and we heartily en. dorse the same, because, instead of a one crop section of the country we should have a diversi. fied condition; this would lessen the hazard our Utah county farmers have been put to the last three or four years; instead of depending on a "peach crop" entirely, the diversified con- dition would improve the farming business as a whole.

With a diversified system the farm can be made to pay better than it now does, because it aims at a greater production per acre and at meeting special market conditions. The one great point in commercial farming is to produce those articles which pay best, considering mar- ket conditions.
Onions are to be ciassed among the surest and most profitable of crops. There is a constant demand for them at prices which give a return of $200 to $400 an acre. It is a product that the beginner need not fear to experiment with to the extent of several acres.
It requires methodical work and business netiiods to make any kind of a farm pay, and since we have had a long succession of frosts, and bad market conditions in the fruit in- dustry of this county, we are now coming to consider crop diversity seriously. We are sure that those who have lost a large part of their fruit the last few years will give attention to our piea for greater diversification on the
farms.
Location may or may not determine the suc- cess of a farmer, but it has much to do with the produce which is raised.
Questions of selling and buying are receiving more attention today than ever before, and

the principle of co-operation is being applied in many instances.
The problem of distributing products once grown, is a question vitally important. The factors of distribution depend upon;
1. Nearness of the Market.
2. Transportation.
3. Character of Market.
4. Competition in the Market.
5. Middlemen's Profits.
6. Development of Agricultural Credit.
7. Business Co-operation Among Farmers.
Because these are economic considerations, they are vital to the success of the farmer, and should be the subjects of thorough investigation.
The men who make the most money in farm. ing are men above the average; the production, quality, and marketing are above the average. Those farmers who stand on the common level will get a living, but not much more. For example, a few "wise" farmers near Chicago receive $2.50 to $5.00 a bushel for all the corn they raise. They understand the selling end of farming as well as the producing end. One is just as important as the other.
These farmers buy 60-cent corn for feeding. They cannot afford to use their own product. They raise corn of a high type and sell sys- tematically.
They are becoming wealthy by this kind of

brain work. This is a lesson for all farmers. Farmers must get together and develop methods of selling: Co-operation is the first step and organization is applied to the selling end as well as to associations.
In Europe, farmers market and dispose of their produce profitably through agricultural co-opera- tive associations-also in the eastern part of the United States.
It ought to be the aim of every farmer, to accomplish the following definite results.
(1) Diversify Crops, then profits and labor are evenly distributed throughout the year.
(2) Market poultry, dairy products, vege- tables, beets, pork, etc., at all seasons of the year-study market conditions.
(3) Shorten the work day to ten hours and make life enjoyable.
(4) Allow the young people to have a little money from the farm. Teach them to plan work for themselves, and to love the country.
(5) Make a business of the farm, keep ac- curate record of all your expenses and profits, just the same as the merchants do. In this way you can find out which products pay best and the other poor paying products can be eliminated. Use the Bookkeeping System in this book-it will help you.
