When a horse is recovering from sickness or is in need of a tonic, the best is Fowler's soiu- tion of Arsenic. Water your horse from a pail and give him one fluid ounce of Fowier's solu- tion in the drinking water for eight days, tben discontinue for six days and begin for eight days more; each ounce of solution contains five grains of arsenic. The reason for discontinuing is in order that it cannot accumulate too much in the system at one time.

Founder.

If shoo, remove shoes and give one quart of linseed oil and a bran mash with one oz. of nitre. Make swabs of old sacking and keep them on his feet and keep them wet until the inflamation seems to be gone. Rest and time is the best cure.

Spavin, Curb, Ringbone, Splints.

Should be treated with a biister composed of 1% drams of Biniodide of Mercury and one oz. of lard. Rub it into the affected part and in about three days apply a little linseed oil or lard so that the scales will come off easily. If one application does not cure apply again after three weeks.

Worms.

A drench composed of three oz. of linseed oil and one oz. of turpentine given twice a day for three days, followed on the third day by a quart of linseed oil will generally remove them.

Cuts or Wounds.

Get the injured surface as clean as possible by washing, and applying a good healing lotion. One composed of 2 drams each of sulphate of zinc and acetate of lead in a pint of water ls about as good as any. This is a good lotion to apply to scratches or cracked heels.

For Ringworm.

On horses or any kind of stock Iodine oint- ment which can be obtained at any drug store is a good cure.

For Fistula.

When everything else seems to fail get some crude petroleum and a syringe having a long nozzie. Insert it in the false membrane and fill with the oil. Do this about every second day and in four. to six weeks it will effect a cure unless it is a bad case and may take longer.

Lice.

Fifty parts of crude petroleum and one part of crude carbolic acid is a sure cure. Should be applied to horses or cattle with a spray. A few gunny sacks soaked in it and wound round a post in the hog lot will soon cure them.

One of the best cures for cholera in chickens is: give every second morning when fasting some wheat which has been soaked in kerosene in the proportion of one oz. of kerosene to one quart of wheat. For vermin, one of the simplest and best remedies especially for hatching hens or hens raising chicks: an olntment made of one part of mercurial ointment and two parts of lard and applied sparingly round the vent.

to pay for it. If a farmer is fortunate enough to produce an eighteen or nineteen-hundred pound horse his proflt is assured.

Breed for delicate Improvement in type rather than a mere Increase in the number of animais. It is hard enough to perpetuate the good qual. ities that an anlmai possesses; why expect the impossible, i. e., the transmittal of absent char- acteristics. Individual selection based on utli. ity is the only safe practice.

Draft foals should grow half their weight the first year; If they do not they rarely make it up later, and It is only with great care and liberal feeding that they are able to make this showing. Keep the colts galning and growing. You will be well paid for the feed they consume.

A roadster foal should show form as a year- ling, and a trained eye should be able to de- tect evidences of speed or promise of develop- ment. Liberal feeding and activity are prime factors. Their growth must not be interfered with nor their exercise halted. Flesh does them no injury if it is put on rightly. On the other hand, scant ratlons dwarf development, and not only decrease slze, but sap vitality and vigor, thus weakening his endurance and stamina. A roadster without staylng qualities is like a cartridge without powder."

HOG CHOLERA AND WORMS.

The amateur farmer does not need expert advice to enable him to keep his hogs in clean yards and bulldings. Without much scientific knowledge he can see the wisdom of allowing them to range in grass or clover. They need a change of pasture and grounds now and again. It takes only a little systematle effort to provide clean troughs and fresh water. A shed Is needed for shade In summer unless there are trees, and winter pens and yards should be kept in a sanitary condition. All these things count largely In warding off diseases and in making a good quality of pork. The charcoal and wood ashes which are valuable aids to the health of swine, will help to a great extent in warding off cholera. Corn given In a green stage is one of the causes of cholera and this kind of feeding should be avoided.

Young hogs are more susceptible and natur- ally show the first symptoms. One or more of the young ones will be seen to lag behind the others. They refuse their feed, may seem to suf- fer from cold, shiver, will seek their sleeping quarters, be restless and anxious, ears hot and

Diarrhoea or constipation may be present, but in most cases diarrhoea with blood stalned feces will follow constipation as food becomes decom- posed in the intestines. Breathing or respiration is hurried and the animal may show signs of pain. Skin leslons present themselves in the form of small dark red or purple spots on the abdomen, inner side of the thighs or under the arms.

munization. This statement accepted by the farmer in its literal meaning has undoubtedly cost the farmers many millions of dollars. In all infectious contagious diseases sanitation comes first. And if hog cholera symptoms ap- pear in your herd it is advisable to call the state veterinarian.

To keep up-to-date with the hog cholera treat- ment, write to the Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C., for their latest bulletins on the subject.

For worms in hogs the simplest cure is: . just after they are weaned give in some slop three mornings in succession after having fasted all night and before they have any other food, quarter of an ounce of turpentine for each 100 pounds of weight of hogs. Repeat this every two months and you will have no bother from worms. Throw your small coal and slack in the hog lot where your hogs can get It; they need the sulphur and iron that is in it. If your little pigs are suffering from diarrhoea give the sow half a teaspoonful of baking soda and half a teaspoonful of sulphur mixed together in the food.

The Kentucky experiment station suggests the following formula for worms:

HINTS FOR CARE AND BREEDING OF LIVE STOCK.

"The breeding of live stock is an art. Live stock farming is even more, for not only does this practice measure agricultural progress and development, but it preserves the wealth of farming sections and is the direct cause of con- tinued prosperity for the tillers of the soil. The country in general, the East in particular, is surely learning this lesson. The present in- terest and activity toward a revival of live stock feeding and breeding operations suggests that progressive farmers recognize the necessity of producing not only an increased number of farm animals, but more useful and marketable specimens as well. This is true for two rea- sons. First, the landowners demand that the fertility of the soil be maintained and added to rather than exhausted; and second, the ten. ant, in order to live and prosper, must have

salable live stock or their products that he can market at a reasonable profit.

The average farmer does not recognize the real importance of using pure-bred sires poss- essed of good breeding and outstanding indi- viduality; he does not realize the dangers ano disadvantages of indiscriminate mating, but rather is content to chance improvement by mixing breeds, mating relatives, using immature sires regardless of their shallow blood lines and in spite of their very evident lack of individual excellence and prepotency; and, he gives little attention in the selection of brood mares, thus relying too much on the sire for improvement. Even though the slres used may be of known breeding, the tendency is to mate them with mares of vastly different conformation and of questionable usefulness or soundness. Far too often a mare is bred because she is a "switcher," or has other vicious habits or unsoundness that disqualify her from work or market.
