Utah county raises the best fruit in America and yet, the marketing of this fruit profitably has been a failure-why? Because the farmers have for years and years been coached on how to produce-without learning the first laws of proper marketing. The result is we have a iot of dissatisfied farmers who disbelieve the local fruit dealers, and who refuse to listen to the lecturers about Increasing production. What

good does it do to increase production, when the SELLING MACHINERY has never been prop- erly introduced and explained to the farmer?
It requires more business ability, and a higher Executive faculty, to run a fruit farm than to run a grain farm. If the farmer has a hundred bushels of wheat, oats, or potatoes to seil, there is no hurry about a market. It is not so with fruit-here the farmer takes hls fruit to the nearest market and accepts whatever Is offered -he must sell immediately-therefore business abillty Is required In learning where the best market is for frult of certain klnds. The man who ralses fruit should be thoroughly posted on Its value. In this case the marketing is more important than producing.
Modern farming, as we vlew the subject, re- quires varied information-the most important of which is marketing and selling.
It needs the application of commercial ideas. Real success In agriculture can only be attained by keeping up with changing conditions and developing a well balanced business program to go with the tilling of the soil.
The Farmers Directory and reference book Is the most Important step toward successful mar- keting ever presented to the farmer. Why?

Because it gives the farmer a complete knowi- edge about his "competitors" (neighbor farm- ers). The law of supply and demand is abso- lutely solved within the county-through in- formation contained in the Farmers Directory. The farmers who depend wholly on the demand of local markets, should know exactly where the supply of these markets comes from. Knowing this it is only a matter of business keenness in supplying the market, and the farmer who knows most about market conditions is always going to get the best prices for his products. He can't afford to be without a Direc- tory, which is the County Production Guide.

WELL BALANCED FARMING.
The great open ranges of the Mississippi Val- ley have given place to the pianter and the smail herdsman. Now the great grain fields of the northwest, the extreme west and southwest are giving place to the smail farmer and the stock grower. The one-crop sugar, cotton or tobacco plantations of the south are giving way to mixed farming.
Back of all these changes is one basic, funda- mental economic law or principle. That law is that any agricultural venture dependent entirely upon one crop or product is not well balanced. It is not safe, sound business farming. It is the same old story that it is not good business to put all your eggs in one basket. Well-balanced mixed farming is the farming which makes for permanent success of the individual farmer, and

for permanent success and economic indepen- dence of the nation.
There are occasional isolated instances of men making remarkable financial successes in farm- ing who devote their entire energy, investment and attention to one product; but these are the exception rather than the rule. Their successes are not so much because they have devoted ali their attention and energies to one product, but because of the fact that they are more than or- dinarily high class business men.
There are lean years and fat years in all kinds of farming, as well as all kinds of business. The man who has everything centered in one pro- duct runs up against a very difficult proposition when he strikes a lean year in that particular product; whereas, if he is carrying on a mixed farming business, the fact that he has a lean year with one product does not necessarily mean that he has a lean year with the other; in fact, a lean year for one is generally a fat year for another, so that all years are ail well-fiesbed years; none of them is extremely lean. This is the principle that makes well-balanced mixed farming the safe, sane type of business farming for any one to undertake.

USEFUL INFORMATION FOR THE FARMER. VETERINARY NOTES FOR STOCK OWNERS.
The following notes are not meant as a com- plete veterinary guide, which would be out of place in a work of this kind, but are intended as a kind of first aid to the sick.
Any horse owner who has not already learned how to take a horse's temperature and count his pulse and respirations can learn to do so easily by studying the paragraphs devoted to that subject. It is the only way a person can really know the extent of a horse's sickness; a veterinary thermometer will cost about a dollar. Every farmer ought to have a syringe for ad- ministering medicine and a tocar and canula in case of bloat, as it is much more certain than depending on medicine.
The recipes given are composed as far as pos- sible with ingredients which can be obtained in almost any country store, but every owner of live stock ought to have on hand the foliowing, as on most farms they will save their cost many times over in the course of a year.
One quart bottle of Creolin or any similar coal tar disinfectant; one quart will make fifty gal- lons of disinfectant. One gallon of cold drawn linseed oil; be sure it is not the boiled kind such as painters use.

HORSES.
A horse's normai temperature in times of health varies from 90 to 101. In case of sick- ness it rises when there is fever, and when it gets up to 103 or 4 and is accompanied with a high pulse and quickened respiration, it is gen- erally advisable if the animal is a valuable one to call the veterinarian. Always be sure and shake down the thermometer before inserting it. The pulse varies from thirty-six to forty-two per minute and can be easily felt on the near side of the horse where the large artery bends round the lower edge of the jaw bone. You can locate it by placing your thumb outside and your fingers under the jaw, just about four or five inches from the top of the 'wind pipe. A quick- ened hard, full pulse points to high fever and inflamation. A small rapid and weak pulse also points to fever, associated with a weak and

debilitated subject. The action of the puise is of more importance than the frequency. A horse breathes from 9 to 14 times a minute, but much more rapidly when its lungs are af. fected. With a little experience any one with a little common ordinary horse sense can give a good guess as to what is wrong with his horsc. Everyone knows the symptoms associated with COLIC, and if you have the medicines recom- mended on hand administer at once: One quart of iinseed oil, one oz. of turpentine and one oz. of chloral hydrate.
Keep the bottle well shaken until you have given ail the medicine. It is a good thing to lead the horse around as he is liable to rupture him- self if left alone to roll and do as he likes. If he is not better in a couple of hours give one oz. of turpentine and one oz. of chloral hydrate in one pint of finseed oil.
Coughs and Colds.
If treated in time usually pass away without much trouble. At first appearance of either it is weil to take your horse's temperature and pulse. If it is not much above normai a good warm bran mash with one oz. of nitre in it will help to relieve him.
