Volume I.
GRE
INTRODUCTORY.
The publishers, in presenting this, the first volume of the UTAH STATE GAZETTEER AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY, do so with the confident assurance that it will be found most complete, and will fill a long-felt want among the business and professional men of this rapidly growing State. It is the first book of the kind ever issued for Utah and the only Gazetteer issued in the United States, containing a list of the Farmers and Land Owners of the State. The publication of a State Gazetteer requires experience, patience, time, an almost endless grist of correspondence, and considerable capital. In the following pages, we have endeavored to fully cover every point in the State and place before the public, a Gazetteer of which our citizens can justly feel proud. It is the outcome of patient toil and painstaking care.
The general features of the work consist of a full descriptive and business directory of each city, town, village, postoffice and railroad station in the State, embodying location, population, nearest shipping point, distance and geographical direction from the county seat, location of nearest bank, and other valuable statistics, all of which will be found arranged in alphabetical order, beginning on page 57 and ending on page 362. Following this is the list of Farmers and Land Owners, arranged by counties, beginning on page 363 and ending on page 500. Following the Farmers' List, will be found the Classified Business Directory (pages 501 to 665). In this section of the work, every line of business and profes- sion is arranged in alphabetical order, with the names of all persons engaged in such business or profession following under each heading. For example, if it be desired to find the names of all the General Merchandise Dealers of the State, refer to the lines of business commencing with letter G, and under the head of General Merchandise will be found the names of all in that business, the post- office addresses being arranged alphabetically under the heading. Attention is called to pages 19 and 20, on which will be found an index, giving number of page on which any desired information can be found. This index should be referred to by all until they become familiar with the different departments of the work.
This Gazetteer is placed in the libraries of the directory offices of all the important cities of the country, where it is frequently consulted by non-residents, persons seeking investments, travelers, etc., and where it serves as a lasting advertisement for the State, its business men and its public and private institu- tions. To the many friends who have kindly furnished needed information and to the business men of the State who have stood by us so loyally in this publica- tion, we return our hearty thanks, and promise on our part that we will publish the Gazetteer regularly hereafter, with such improvements from time to time as the wants of our patrons may require.

UTAH
Though the last of the States to enter the Union, Utah was visited by the first trans-Missouri explorers of which we have any record. In 1689 Baron La Hontan gathered from Western Indians a vague account of the Great Salt Lake and told strange stories of the bearded men who dwelt in powerful cities on its shores. About 1776 Father Escalante visited Utah Lake. In 1820 Mr. Miller of the Astor party saw the Salt Lake and in the same year Prevost trapped in its neighborhood. Four years later Jim Bridger came and in 1832 Captain Bonneville. The first really important account of the Utah region, however, was given by John C. Freemont, who with Kit Carson, examined it in 1843.
