Brigham Young College.
LOGAN, UTAH.
O N the 24th of July, 1877, about a month prior to his death, Brigham Young conveyed to a board of seven trustees 9,642 acres of land, located south of Logan City, the profits and issues of which were to be used for the support of an institution of learning, to be known as the Brigham Young Col- lege. In accordance with the provisions of the Deed of Trust and the Articles of Incorporation, it is the general policy of the institution to promote the higher educational interests of the people, providing a liberal and thorough education that embraces not only mental discipline and physical training, but moral and spiritual culture. It is the constant aim of the college authorities to provide for such work as will prepare the student for success in life, considered from the broadest possible point of view. Thoroughness and efficiency are emphasized in all of the departments.
The College was first opened for the admission of students in September, 1878. Since then it has progressed with steady and healthful growth. Each year has marked an improvement in its facilities and an increase in its strength.
COURSES.
The following courses are offered:
(1) Course in General Science, four years; (2) Course in Arts, four years; (3) Normal Course, four years; (4) Academic Course, four years.
The first two of these courses lead to degrees, the others to certificates of graduation.
In connection with the Normal Course, a Normal Training School is main- tained .
FACILITIES.
The buildings used by the College comprise the east building, west building, laboratory, and the President's residence. These buildings are all provided with steam heat, water, and electric lights.
The chemical, physical, and biological laboratories are provided with the necessary apparatus for practical, experimental work in the natural and physical sciences. The museum is supplied with specimens illustrative of geology, min- eralogy, lithology, paleontology, metallurgy, botany, zoology, archeology.
The library contains upward of 3,000 volumes, including the principal ency- clopedias and dictionaries. The reading room is supplied with the most import- ant papers and magazines of the United States.
The faculty for 1899-1900 numbers 26. Fifty-three rooms are in use. There are 106 different classes, besides work in the Normal Training School.
