PROVO CITY.
The county seat of Utah county, is sit- uated at the junction of the O. S. L. and R. G. W. Rys, 46 miles south of Salt
Lake City, about 3 miles from the east- ern shore of Utah Lake, in the beautiful and prosperous Utah valley. Provo, called "The Garden City of Utah," was settled in March, 1849, by members of the Mormon church, who made camp on the south side of the Provo river. These pioneers built a fort for protection from the Indians and began at once to culti- vate the soil. In the following year, 1850, battles with the Indians were had, and were the only affairs of the kind occurring in the immediate vicinity al- though the setttlers were frequently called upon to assist their neighbors against the hostile Indians.
Two derivations of the name Provo are given. One is that it was the name of a favorite horse of General Fremont which died near this point; another that it was the name of a French trapper and hunter who pursued his avocation in this section. The original spelling of the name in either case was Proveau.
In 1851 a city was laid out and set- tlers began to move out from the fort. In April, 1851, the City of Provo was or- ganized and officers elected.
Manufacturing in a small way began early and a small carding machine built and operated by Shadrach Holdaway and Alanson Morton in 1851 may be said to be the beginning of the woolen manufac- turing industry, now carried on so ex- tensively by the Provo Woolen Mills, the largest woolen factory in the West. This institution is turning out a superior class of goods and finds a ready market for its productions in Utah and in differ- ent cities and States of the United States. These mills have been awarded numerous medals and diplomas for the excellence of the goods turned out, capturing at the California Midwinter Fair the first prize. There are about 200 people given em- ployment at these mills, and improve-

ments in machinery and new buildings are constantly being added.
Provo at the present time has a popu- lation of about 7500, with churches, schools, banks, factories, mercantile houses engaged in every line of business and all the professions and trades repre- sented.
In schools Provo has the Brigham Young Academy, one of the leading edu- cational institutions in the intermoun- tain region, with an annual average at- tendance of about 800 pupils. The acad- emy has recently completed a large addi- tion to its building at a cost of $20,000, which will nearly double its capacity for room in which to teach the young idea.
The Proctor Academy is here located and furnishes an excellent place for in- struction.
The public school system as conducted in the many beautiful and roomy school buildings is not excelled anywhere in the Western States and the school popula- tion of Provo is "pretty considerable."
The Utah Stake Tabernacle, one of the finest buildings in the State devoted to public worship, is here located and other denominations are represented as fol- lows: Congregational, Baptist Metho- dist, Seventh Day Adventist, Christian Scientist, etc.
One daily and one semi-weekly news- paper are published and have a large general circulation in the city and State.
Two banks, one with capital of $10,000, the other with capital of $25,000, and one savings bank, capitalized at $10,000, are doing a very large business.
In the beautiful canyon, located about 10 miles from the city, the Provo Canyon Power plant transmits its electric power to the mining camps of Mercur and Eureka. The plant, which cost in the neighborhood of $1,500,000, has a capaci- ty of 5000 horse-power and it is the in-
tention of the promoters to increase the power capacity in the near future.
Climatic conditions and the soil of Provo and vicinity enable the farmer and fruit grower to produce some of the largest crops and the most delicious fruits known. The finest varieties of apples, peaches, apricots, pears, plums, grapes, prunes and smaller fruits attain to the greatest perfection in size and flavor.
The raising of sheep, cattle and horses is extensively engaged in by the people.
The Utah Lake, a beautiful sheet of fresh water 10x30 miles, teems with trout, bass and others of the finny tribe, besides being a favorite resort for the hunter of ducks, geese, etc., which are to be found in vast numbers during the hunting season.
The State Insane Asylum, costing over $400,000, is here located. Over 200 pa- tients are being treated and the building has capacity for about twice that num- ber.
The city has an excellent waterworks , system, costing nearly $150,000, the water being brought from the Provo river at the mouth of Provo canyon.
A first-class creamery, two roller mills, two planing mills, a fine stone-sawing plant and several other manufacturing industries are located here.
The assessed valuation of the city is nearly $2,500,000. Exp., Wells, Fargo & Co. and Pacific. Tel., W. U. and Deseret. John C. Graham, postmaster.
