Is a small station located in the western part of Box Elder county, on the C. P. R. R., 109 miles from Corinne and 170 from Salt Lake City.
BRIGHAM CITY.
Brigham City, aptly described as "The City of Homes," is beautifully located on the western slope of the Wasatch mountains, twenty miles north of Ogden. It is the county seat of Box Elder county and contains about 3000 inhabitants. The O. S. L. R. R. runs through the city and the S. P. is but a few miles distant on the west. The residents of Brigham City are nearly all engaged in fruit raising or farming, the former being the prin- cipal occupation. The strawberries of this place are especially famous and the supply has very seldom been equal to the demand. All kinds of fruit, however, can be raised at a profit and of fine quality. Immense orchards of peaches and prunes have been planted in recent years and are just beginning to be productive. Raising sugar beets
is now receiving considerable atten- tion also, and promises to be a profit- able industry. The city has a natural advantage over any other in the State -it is never muddy. Built on an im- mense wash of gravel from the Box Elder canyon, no matter how hard it may rain, a few hours of sunshine will make the streets practically dry. This peculiarity of the soil does not, how- ever, interfere with irrigation, and it is highly productive. The city has an electric light system, a woolen mill making an excellent quality of cloth and yarn, a creamery, a number of mercantile houses, one drug store, a bank, a tannery, a planing mill, lum- ber yards and one newspaper, The Box Elder News.
While distinctively a Mormon com- munity, there are two other churches established, the M. E. and Presby- terian, which have neat church build- ings.
The public library, in its own cozy building, is deserving of special men- tion. The city is supplied with pure water from the Box Elder canyon, and has an excellent water system owned by the city, which will be extended and improved this year. The exten- sion of the Bear River canal to this city, which is being strongly agitated at the present time, would double the population and wealth of the city in a very few years.
The city was first settled in 1852 and the pioneers had to contend with many hardships and privations before the soil could be made productive and the environment suitable for civilized liv- ing. It is now, with its abundance of trees and foliage, healthful water sup- ply, neat gardens and homes, wide
