OGDEN.
The county seat of Weber county, is situated near the southern boundary line, at an altitude of 4250 feet. Population 22,000.
When the train steams into Ogden you are midway between the Missouri river and the Golden Gate. Stepping from the cars a series of impressive surprises greet you. The metropolitan magnitude of the Union Depot first enlists your ad- miration. Over and beyond it to the
east the Wasatch mountains chain the vision and, although six miles away, seem almost within arm's reach. The scene is an inspiration that thrills the soul, for surely Deity was in a sublime mood when He sculptured these majestic heights. They are eternally capped in virgin snows, but beneath their chaste mantle are enciente with precious ores. That stupendous crevice in its side is · Ogden Canyon, where the handiwork of man makes man marvel. The canyon is the channel of the Ogden river, whose waters have been harnessed and are now serving to engender the greatest electri- cal motor energy in the West, beside illuminating Ogden City by night and supplying heat to chase away the win- ter's chill. The influence of this mam- moth enterprise is fast redeeming Ogden from the panic's undoing and speeding the working out of its assured future greatness.
Looking westward, that gleaming sur- face is Great Salt Lake. It is but nine miles distant, and there is vast wealth in its waters in crude salt, that beckons to the manufacturer. Pleasure riots on the beach of the lake and the tonic-laden breezes above and blowing Ogden-ward insure longevity and kiss back healtlı to cheeks from which it has fled. The thickly-sprinkled orchards on all sides, fruit deep, are a source of competence to all and a snug fortune to not a few.
The new electric power plant, with a capacity of 10,000 horse-power, recently completed by appropriating the use of the waters of the Ogden river, is utilized not only for manufacturing purposes, but also for heating, lighting and other practical purposes.
