BUREM CEMETERY - Hawkins Co, Tn. (Not on the map)
By EULA MAE MCNUTT & son DAVID McNUTT Visited Jan 2 1987 Located 4 miles out Burem Road, across Holston River Bridge, turn left at the old Burem Store house. Go through the iron gate. It has dates on the gate posts. Go down the long drive way to the Old Burem Plantation house. The cemetery is to the left of the house in the field toward the river. It is fenced, and has tall unusual tombstones. Some are hard to read, white marble. DAVID MCNUTT lives in the old BUREM home there.
HENRY BUREM born New York, died here Aug 22 1823, age 66 years, "A Soldier for American Independence"
MARTHA MILLER born Penn., died here June 10 1813, age 47 years, wife of HENRY BUREM
HENRY SIMON BUREM Oct 3 1835 - Oct 2 1903, A Confederate Soldier from Apr 1861 to Apr 1865. Suffered to the date of his death, from wounds received in battle at Franklin Tenn, on Nov 30 1864.
MARY BUREM born in Germany, died here 1819, age at death 101, wife of SIMON BUREM of New York.
PISTER BUREM died July 31 1851, age 52 yrs
MARGARET S. BUREM died July 2 1876, age 58 yrs, wife of A.L. BUREM
ABSALOM L. BUREM Jan 2 1812 - July 21 1884
ALLEN MILLER May 19 1836 - Aug 14 1838, son of FRANCIS J. MILLER
There was a tall stone. The following information was on both sides of it. MARY F. (BUREM) CLINE Mar 30? 1837 - Sept 15 1856, wife of J.L. CLINE, dau of A. L. & M. S. BUREM, [signed at the base; T.J. HILL, Rogersville, TN]
(T.J. HILL probably made the stone. Rogersville once had a marble quarry. Some of the marble in Washington DC. was shipped from there. ) [EULA MAE MCNUTT]
MARGIE A.M. CAIN Sept 14 1856 - Oct 7 1856, only child of J. L. & M. F. CAIN "At the head of Mary, repose the remains of her only child"
MARGARET A. BUREM Dec 17 1846 - Aug 24 1854, dau of A.T. (L?) & M.S. BUREM
This was a most unusual tombstone. It has a sunken carved bust of a soldier, with the picture portion raised.
"In memory of CAPT JAMES P. BUREM Company G-31 St Tenn. Vols. CSA, born here April 18 1839, killed in battle at Piedmont Va, June 4 1864. His remains are at Winchester, Va."

HEAD CEMETERY - Plum Grove #10
By EULA MAE MCNUTT & DAVID MCNUTT
Visited Apr 17 1982
Located off of Route 625. It is at the top of Knob where BAXTER & FLARIE HALL BLEDSOE's unmarked graves are. It is the oldest cemetery in that area I suppose. It is a low Gap on Clinch River Knobbs, between roads 625 & 626, near MAMIE JONES home and Head & McClures Branch. Runs about 125 feet east and west, and at least 75 feet north & south. There are at least 150 graves, old rocks, but no etching.
DANIEL BLEDSOE told me he knew one person buried in his lifetime, was LEVI HEAD. I counted up dates. DANIEL was 29 years old when LEVI was buried. I have his Pension Records and he died 1904.
I figure it was a community burial ground for old pioneers who lived there. WILLIAMS - GILLIAMS - McCLURES, and many others. I have checked deeds and wills, census, who lived near by. Also older BARNETTS.
None of the living descendants of these names knows any thing. Probably 20 or more infants, and childrens graves there. It is in fair shape to be in the woods and neglected for so many years. Probably some inmates from the poor farm west of there, near HEAD CEMETERY. Don't think it was in existence for long. LEWIS brothers sold it to Scott Co. Supervisors. Need to trace it to see who they sold it to, when they built one west of Gate City, Va.
WILLIAMS CEMETERY - Plum Grove #11
By EULA MAE MCNUTT, DAVID McNUTT, and MICHAEL JONES
Going west on Road 626, from Wolf Church, to Grit Hill Church, at LARRY JONES house. His son MICHAEL JONES took me and DAVID about a mile up through a field and woods, then a barn & a field, to back side of the farm. It is not fenced, but there are 8 graves we found there. His grandfather RONOLD JONES and others told me that a lady I know was buried there, ELIZABETH LIZZIE RHOTON WILLIAMS, wife of JOSEPH WILLIAMS, and sister of SALLIE GILREATH.
Little concrete marker, initials H.K.J. on the top. Possible twins of her dau LOUEMMA WILLIAMS 1st wife of ANDY J. JONES
R.E.W. July 9 1927 etched on a rock. Has to be a WILLIAMS, ELIZABETH died late 1940's or 50's
She has many grand children, yet alive, her last son WILBOURN WILLIAMS died about 2 or 3 years ago.

Note :
There is a huge log at the side of the road across from the Eden's house, covered over with tin, to preserve it. NEAL sold moonshine, but the law raided him many times, but never found any. This log was hollowed out in the inside. And bees hived in it. With a secret plug inside, from the bees, is where he kept many jars of moonshine for his regular customers. He pulled out the plug, reached inside, pull out a jar, Put plug back in, and presto. Bees on guard. I saw bees on each end by the millions buzzing in and out. I have photos of this log in some of my pictures. [EULA]

[By PHYLLIS L. PETERSON - compiler]
First I would like to pay tribute to my grandfather ROBERT RUFUS "BOB" PIERSON. He lived in Scott Co. all his life. One of his goals was to out live his grandfather ROBERT SPEER, that lived to be a few months over 103 yrs. ROBERT succeeded in doing that. He was 3-4 weeks away from being 104 at his death. His obituary reads as follows:
ROBERT R. "BOB" PIERSON, 103, Route 1, Gate City, Va., died Tuesday (Oct. 22, 1991) at Hillside Manor Nursing Home. Born in Scott County, Va., he was a farmer and a member of the Copper Creek Community Church. He was a member of the Clinchport Lodge No. 267 A. F. and A. M. He was preceded in death by his wife, AMANDA ELIZABETH PAGE PIERSON, in June 1967; his parents WILLIAM "BILLY" and SARAH SPEARS (SPEER) PIERSON; one son, WALTER PIERSON; one daughter, KATHLEEN PIERSON; and two brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are one daughter, VESTA (PIERSON) TRUSSELL, Kingsport: three sons, LUCIAN PIERSON, Gate City, Va., CLAUDE W. PIERSON (father of compiler) , Los Angeles, Calif, and RUFUS PIERSON, Kingsport; 21 grandchildren; 26 great- grandchildren; one sister, LAURA WILLIS, Kingsport; and one brother LLOYD PIERSON, West Virginia.
