WILLIS CAMPBELL CEMETERY - N. Stickleyville #71 (cont)
This is the first right after passing over Powell Mountain (N. Duffield Map crossing over to the N. Stickleyville Map) and entering Lee County from Scott County. The WILLIS CAMPBELL CEMETERY is exactly 2.2 miles down Route 612 and on the right side of the road (across the road from the residence of CECIL SMITH) . The cemetery sits high up on the mountain and back about 30 yards into a tree line (altogether about 400 yards up a steep grad from Route 612 to the cemetery) . The cemetery also lies near a small pond which sits in an open crevice in the wooded area.
One morning in 1886, WILLIS CAMPBELL left home with a few head of cattle to sell at market just over the other side of Powell Mountain (Scott Co. ). At the market, he sold the cows and bought some feed. On his return trip, he never made it home. About 2 years went by when his bones, along with some shredded sacks, were discovered near Wallen's Creek on Powell Mountain. He had been bushwhacked for the money he earned selling cattle at the market only for his remains (except for bones) to be eaten by a bear. His bones were finally laid to rest in this lonely grave on the side of the mountain.
His gravestone states the following:
WILLIS CAMPBELL (son of JOHN & MARY [ POLLY] CAMPBELL and husband of Ist wife, PEGGY A. CLEEK [had 2 children], and 2nd wife, MARGARET CLARK, had 5-6 children) "37TH VA Infantry, Company D/K, C. S.A. ", Born circa 1814, died 1886.
It is possible that WILLIS CAMPBELL's second wife, MARGARET CLARK CAMPBELL (dau of WILLIAM B. & SERENA CLARK) may also be buried beside him.
WILLIS CAMPBELL (no marker) (1st wife PEGGY CLEEK - 2 children, 2nd wife MARGARET CLARK - 5 or 6 children)
STICKLEY FAMILY CEMETERY - N. Stickleyville #72 (Lee Co.)
By JACK PAUL BESS, JR., CECIL SMITH, & J.L. TOMLINSON Letter dated Aug 13 1992
Location and directions: This is almost across the street from the WILLIS CAMPBELL CEMETERY. Coming from Route 58 North, turn right on to Route 612. This is the first right after passing over Powell Mountain and entering Lee Co. from Scott Co. The Stickley Family Cemetery is exactly 2.3 miles up Route 612 and on the left side of the road, in the woods, and up the hill. This historic cemetery has been vandalized and is in terribly poor condition. The weeds are grown up and snake- infested.
There are a number of unmarked tombstones in this graveyard. There are at least 3 above-ground crypts that have been vandalized with the lids pulled off which belonged to the Stickley Family. Two crypts are adult-size and the other is a child (or infant) size. This same Stickley family which was listed in the 1850 Lee Co. Va Census, (page 306, house 74) was the only Stickley family in Lee Co. at that time. This Stickley Family was listed in the 1850 Census as follows :
VASTINE STICKLEY, age 37, (M), merchant, born in VA ELIZABETH STICKLEY, age 29, (F), born in VA MORGAN STICKLEY, age 8, (M), born in VA MARY STICKLEY, age 6, (F), born in VA WRIGHT STICKLEY, age 4, (M), born in VA WORTH STICKLEY, age 1, (M), born in VA
The following names are among the many unmarked graves:
JOSEPH DUFF b. 1801-1803 - d. 1872. (son of ROBERT DUFF & MARY
POWELL DICKENSON) (farmed around the Welch creek area)
GEORGE (LINCOLN) SMITH, d. 1922

A.J. ALLEN Apr 21 1872 - Apr 18 1873 son of J. R. ALLEN and ADDIE LISTON
