This cemetery was labeled wrong in volume 5. It was listed as the BARNETT cem and location was 46. This should be the ASHE cemetery, and the location is #50. "It is located off of road 753, high up on a knoll. There was a tobacco patch on the left of the path and woods to the right, above a barn. Cattle in the shade, across the fence, in the woods." [EULA]
The entire cemetery is listed here, along with additional information on some of them, by EULA MAE McNUTT. Her update information is in ( ).

SMITH CEMETERY - S. Duffield #54
By ROBERT DAVID LANE
Letter dated Oct 18 1992
It is located in an area called Flatwoods, at the top of Purchase Ridge. The top of this ridge is semi-level with shallow valleys. A very sound rock chimney stands in a shallow valley. This chimney is all that is left of a 2 story log house. This is (as I've been told) where WILKERSON and MELINDA LANE lived and raised their family.
The WILLIAM SMITH family lived there around the turn of the century.
The cemetery is located just up the hill and to the left of an old fallen down barn. The entire area is grown up with brush and vines. The cemetery has just about become invisible to find because of the large trees and brush.
These are the stones and/or names that I remember.
WILLIAM B. SMITH "Husband" (He left a will in 1908)
MARY B. SMITH "Wife" (She was a HORTON)
LUCY HORTON
BELLE (SMITH, married a BENTON)
Two children stones with names, but I don't remember the names.
JOHN PATTON RHOTON (Funeral home marker - 1956, 83 years old)
WILLIAM (WILKERSON) LANE May 3 1822 - June 15 1895
LINDA LANE July 3 1825 - Dec 10 1898 (This is MELINDA ANN RHOTON LANE)
There were also at least 17 graves marked with standing flat stones. A large rotting tree trunk lay across the cemetery and may have obscured some stones.

Visited Nov 18 1992
This cemetery couldn't be found. According to the people near by, it is close to a pond. We found the pond and walked around it, and looked by the cedar trees, but couldn't find it. There is also another cemetery in this area which a BECKY or BETSY FRAZIER is buried. Also 3 or 4 other unmarked graves. According to the man who told me this, only 4-5 people in the county know about this cemetery.
SLOAN CEMETERY - S. Duffield #73 (Update of Vol 3 Pg 190)
By LEONA & BILL MARTIN
Visited Nov 18 1992
This cemetery is unfenced, in the woods, in poor condition, and difficult to find. You have to open up the red gate next to the barn in order to get to it. The road is poor, and you definitely don't want to drive past the cemetery, unless it's to turn around.

JOHNSON CEMETERY - N. Duffield #133
By JACK PAUL BESS, JR.
Letter dated Nov 13 1991
NOTE : This cemetery was originally located in the path of Route 23 and fell victim to the Virginia Department of Highway's promise to properly relocate this site. It originally housed 53 graves before its relocation in 1966. What was left of these graves was compacted into a square tract of land no larger than 30' X 30' in size. No markers were ever replaced and this, State owned, piece of property is nothing more than an overgrown pile of brush surrounded by a chain- link fence. The Virginia Department of Highways has made no effort at all to upkeep this land since its purchase on May 2, 1966.
Located on Route 856 (spurlock Drive), Duffield. It lies directly behind the CHESSER FAMILY CEMETERY (N. Duffield #132).
J. L. HILL is the only name I have of the 53 unmarked graves buried in this cemetery .

Dear Sir:
Reference is made to our agreement with the Department of Highways, dated April 22, 1966, wherein we agreed to allow the Department to move any or all of the bodies from the graves in the JOHNSON CEMETERY at Duffield, Virginia and reinter them on our land at Duffield for a cash consideration of $35.00 for each body so moved and reburied there; and it now appearing that there are certain heirs at law of J. L. HILL, deceased, VIZ EMER JANE MILLER and GEORGE W. MILLER, her husband, ORBIN W. HILL and ELOISE HILL, his wife, MESBY F. HILL and E. IRENE HILL, his wife, ALBERT C. HILL and CYNTHIA HILL, his wife; BEN T. HILL and ELIZABETH HILL, his wife, made a reservation in a deed, dated January 30, 1962, to BONNIE R. AUSTIN and LACEY AUSTIN, her husband, retaining the right of burial in the JOHNSON CEMETERY; and as it now appears that certain ones of them may elect to reserve space in the new cemetery on our lands lately provided for by

the Highway Department, in lieu of a cash payment by the Department to them, it is therefore agreeable with us for such reservation be made if any of the aforementioned heirs so elect, provided we are paid a consideration by the Department of $35.00 for each grave space so reserved.
