CHARLESTON.
Population, 18,000. The capital of West Virginia and county seat of Kanawha county, is situated on the north bank of the Great Kanawha river at the mouth of the Elk. It was settled in 1787, but remained an obscure town till 1870, when it was made the capital. The United States Government has constructed a series of locks on the Kanawha, which. with a navigable depth of six feet, affords an excellent waterway for the exten- sive coal and timber interests of the district. Good railway transportation also is provided by the Chesapeake & Ohio, the Kanawha Michigan (Ohio Central Lines) and the Charleston, Clendein & Sutton railways. The city
is provided with electric and gas lights, natural gas, electric railway. good waterworks, 5 banks, first-class hotels, 2 hospitals, 2 daily and 1 week- ly newspapers. Its streets are broad. brick paved and lined with shade trees. Iron bridges span its rivers. Handsome residences, business houses and public buildings add much to the city's attractions. The capitol and its annex represent an expenditure of $450.000. the federal building $200.000 and the county court house $150.000. The manufacturing interests of the city comprise several foundries and machine shops, saw mills, furniture factories, etc., veneer factories, han- dle factory, folding bed factory, color works, carriage works, two ice plants. etc. Two telephone systems are in
