ELKINS.

The county seat c/ Randolph coun- ty, named in honor of Hon. S B El- kins, U S senator f om West Virginia. is located on the W Va C & P Ry, 113 miles from Cumberland and 7 from Beverly. The town was founded in April, 1889. Its present population. which is steadily increasing, is about 3.500. The railroad extends to Hutton- ville. 18 miles distant. A branch exten- sion of the road southwest from Elkins to connect with the C & O Ry now be- ing built to the forks of the Greenbrier river in Pocahontas county has been

completed and opens up a virgin re- gion of lumber, coal and minerals, and gives a direct connection with Pitts- burg and the leading markets of the . East and West. The other branch runs northwest to Belington, Barbour county, connecting with the Grafton & Belington road, giving an outlet to Pittsburg, Cincinnati and the West. Elkins is blessed with superior advan- tages, its inexhaustible supply of coal, its forests and excellent trans- portation facilities combine to make it a mining and manufacturing city that defies competition. The trout- filled streams and forests alive with wild turkey, bear and deer, attract sportsmen, its picturesque scenery at- tracts the artist, while the pure water and crisp mountain air induce the health seeker to visit this city of the Alleghenies. Three weekly newspa- pers are publisned, Tygart's Valley News, the Inter-Mountain and the Randolph Enterprise, and The Mystic Tie, a fraternal monthly, being the only Masonic paper published in the state. There is a good hotel, modern opera house, with a seating capacity of 700, the largest tannery in the state, and numerous other manufac- tories. The Davis Memorial Hospital, supplied with the most modern equip- ment, has just been opened for the reception of patients. Telephone con- nection. Exp, Adams. Tel, W Va Central.
