CLARKSBURG.

Population 12.500. The county seat of Harrison county, has a picturesque location on the west fork of the Mo- nongahela river, and rests upon fer- tile soil beneath which is a large and fine area of coking, gas and steam coal. With geographical location in its favor. the advantages of an un- limited supply of coal, oil, gas and timber, plenty of energetic business men and railroads to all points, Clarksburg is to-day one of the fore- most growing towns of the Mountain State, and all indications point to its becoming one of the leading manufac- turing towns of the state. Settle- ments were established in the neigh- borhood of the present site of Clarks- burg as early as 1772. The county of Harrison was established in 1784. . and Clarksburg was selected as the county seat. Clarksburg was named after General George Rogers Clark, and was probably known by that name about the year 1778. The first great imnetus given to the town was in 1856, when the railroad, now known as the B & O was constructed. Since than it has grown, and within the last few years taken the rank of a city. Clarksburg is the gateway to the famous hardwood area of West Virginia, and is reached by rail in all directions, by the main line of the B & O, and its branches-one line run- ning north to Fairmont, one south to Weston, to Camden-on-Gauley, with another branch from near Weston to Buckhannon. and the short line re- cently completed between Clarksburg and New Martinsville. to connect there with the Ohio River branch. On the branch road to Fairmont, 33 miles distant, there are about 30 coal mining industries. West of Clarks-

burg, on the main line of the B & O are the oil developments. With the' oil, gas is found in great quantities. and is utilized for fuel and lighting purposes in the private residences and the mercantile and manufactur- ing enterprises in the city. On ac- count of the inexhaustible mineral re- sources that surround the city and their cheapness Clarksburg's pre-em- inence as a suitable location for ex- tensive' manufactories is recognized and appreciated. Harrison county ranks first among 55 counties of the State. The county comprises 264.258 acres of land, having a value of over $5,000,000, and a population of over 75,000.
