FAIRMONT.
The county seat of Marion county, is the most important commercial city on the B & O R R between Wheeling and Cumberland, and is now enjoying a phenomenal growth. The estimated population is near 10.000. The main line and branches of the B & O R. R center here from four directions and a short line is being built which will open up a new and extensive coal field. The U S Government is spending $1,- 200,000 for the improvement of the Monongahela river between Morgan -- town and Fairmont, which, when com- pleted, will give a navigable stage of water at all seasons of the year and make it the head of Monongahela river navigation. The Fairmont coal region, of which Fairmont is the center, is recognized as the greatest region in the state and rivals the other great fields of the country; over 12,500 miners are employed in this region, and the average number of cars of coal shipped each month is over 10,- 000. The mining interests of West Vir- ginia are mostly controlled by com- binations. The strongest combination of coal properties is that of the Fair- mont Coal Company, with a capital of $12,000.000 and holdings of nearly every important mine in this region. This company owns and controls 40 modern coal and coke plants, with 60,- 000 acres of the choicest coal lands and 5,000 acres of surface. The an- nual output of the company is 6,000,- 000 tons of coal and they have employed 12,500 men. The company's monthly payroll amounts to $400,000,
