DENOON BROS. PAINT & GLASS CO. BRUSHES, PAINTS & VARNISHES. 930-932 PENN AVENUE, PITTSBURG, PA. miles are already completed and in operation. It has already opened up one of the richest portions of the State. On the west side of the river the New York and West Virginia Coal & Coke Co have surveyed the Monon- galia and Cassville railroad, connect- · ing Morgantown with the entrance to the vast field of bituminous coal under- lying all the western portion of the county in seams from 7 to 11 feet thick. A railroad is also projected up Booth's creek to a point 6 miles south of the city, to develop the Freeport vein of coal, large areas of which have just been bought up by capitalists. Natural gas is abundant within a few miles of the city. Two gas companies already have franchises to enter the streets and supply gas for fuel and lights. This cheap fuel makes Morgantown an ad- mirable site for manufacturing plants, many of which are locating here. Two large blown glass factories, employing 600 people, are already in operation, a wire glass factory and a factory for the manufacture of finest cut glass is located here. There is a woolen fac- tory, ¿ planing mills, 4 banks-two of them national banks - a trust com- pany, 10 churches, a fine new High School building, furniture factories, cigar factories, flouring mills, brick works, employing about 40 men; pub- lishing house, employing 23 people, 3 weekly newspapers, 2 dailies, 1 month- ly, 3 newspaper and job offices. Water works are owned by a private corpora- tion and supply the city with an abun- dance of water from the Monongahela river. The city is lighted by natural gas and electricity and has several miles of electric street railroad. The Court House was erected in 1892 at & THE AMERICAN ALL-WROUGHT STEEL SPLIT PULLEY, THE CHAS. H. BERRY SUPPLY CO., WHEELING, W. VA. -

cost of $100,000. No city in the coun- ty or State the size of Morgantown can show so large a proportion of welt built homes.

South Park, just across Decker's creek, is one of the new and well- located residence suburbs. Many streets in the city are graded and paved, and more paving is being done continually. The State University, with its 800 students, is the pride af the city and one of its chief attrac- tions as a place for homes, and the education of youth. Ten commodious buildings adorn the University cam- pus. About 25 acres are included in the grounds. Three new buildings are just being completed at a cost of about $150,000. There is a faculty of 80 members and departments of arts and sciences, law, music, painting and fine arts and a military school in command of an army officer detailed from the United States army. The West Vir- ginia Agricultural Experiment Station, with a staff of 15 specialists is con- nected with the University. It con- tains the chemical laboratory of the State geological survey, the principal office of which, and the State geologist. are both located in Morgantown. Practically all the fraternal insurance companies and social orders in the United States are represented here. The Odd Fellows own a large hall built of red brick. A line of steam- boats furnishes cheap transportation by water from here to Pittsburg. Mor- gantown is on the line of the proposed Pittsburg, Mckeesport, Fairchance and Clarksburg electric road, which is projected from Pittsburg to Fair- chance, and eventually to Fairmont and Clarksburg. This would connect it by rail with the famous resorts on Cheat river in the mountains, 7 miles east of here, which are annually visit- ed by thousands of people. Exp, U S. Tel, W U. Local and long distance telephone connections. Dr. James P Fitch postmaster.
