CHARLES TOWN.
An incorporated town' of 3,000 in' habitants, located on the B & O R R and N & W Ry, in Jefferson county, of which it is the county seat, lv miles from Harper's Ferry, 66 from Wash- ington, 90 from Baltimore, and 300. from Wheeling. The town was laid Sout by Charles Washington, brotner of General Washington, in 1786, and is located in one of the most beauti- ful and fertile sections of the State. The business interests include 3 banks, 3 hotels, one of which is only open in the summer months, 5 build- ing associations, 3 newspapers, Farm- ers' Advocate, Spirit of Jefferson and Virginia Free Press; bridge works. planing mill, sash and blind factory, foundry, machine shops, grain ele- vators, a flour mill, carriage works, barrel factory, brass and iron works, harness and fly net factory, etc. The town's contiguity to raw materials and also to the Eastern markets make it a favorable location for manufac- tories.
