Records of the Clerk as Clerk of the Court


The first California legislature in 1850 directed the County Clerk to be ex officio Clerk of the Court, including at that time the Court of Sessions, County Court, Probate Court and District Court. After judicial reorganization in 1880, the County Clerk has served as ex officio Clerk to the Superior Court, and is responsible for maintaining all court records. Some documents of Justice Courts have passed to the safekeeping of the Clerk, although Justice and Municipal Court records have never been the Clerk's responsibility.
