Kern Leader Dies On Hawaii Trip

John Brown, 52, of Mountain Mesa, long time resident and friend of the valley passed away late Sunday night of a suspected coronary while on a plane to Hawaii.

Brown is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Douglas who is employed by Tech-color in Los Angeles, and Dennis, a student at Bakersfield College; a daughter, Linda who is attending the University of Utah. He is survived by two grandchildren, David, age four and Dorinda, 10 months, children of Douglas and Donna Brown of North Holly- wood.

John Brown was born in Kentucky in 1922, a son of a Baptist minister. During the Second World War he served in the Navy, being stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station, north of Chicago.

The Brown family moved to Burlando Road in Kernville from Oxnard over 18 years ago when John Brown bought the Kernville Lumber Co., then located in old Kernville. Last fall, after finish- ing his new house, he moved to Mountain Mesa.

It is difficult to list all the activities and honors that he has been a part of in this valley. He had nearly inexhaustable energy.

He was a scoutmaster, a Third Degree Mason, president of the Kernville Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Lions Club.

To John Brown the two most important activities were work- ing for his church and the youth of the valley. He was one of a handful of people who built the First Baptist Church on Lake Isabella, 12 years ago. There he held every office obtainable. He taught Sunday school, held the posts of deacon and chairman of the first combined board of directors for the church, was a trustee and unfailing church- goer.

Brown studied intently with plans of working with young people upon his retirement. According to Don Lucas, princi- pal of Kern Valley High School, John was. "Very school-cons- cious and believed in quality education." He participated in the Parent-Teacher Club when his own children attended the high school. He contributed to the fund for the football field lights and other important projects.

Two friends of John Browns, Lois and George Fetter fondly knwon to valley residents as "Mom and Pop" have known him for 23 years. "Johnny is going to

be missed by the entire valley, he was a wonderful man; always - interested in everything the went on and participated 1 everything." recalled Mon Fetter.

One of the highest compliments paid to him happened years ago when he and his wife Dorothy had their picture in a local newspaper under the heading. "Know your local businessmen." His small son, ton young to read, saw the photo and remarked, "That's the man who knows all about Jesus."

Jim Ash, a teacher at the high school may have summed it all up when he said, "He was a real fine Christian man, and he was a prominent and honest business- man."

Funeral services will be held tomorrow in the Lake Isabella Baptist Church at 3 p.m.
