Leavy Funeral Set for Today
Funeral services for community leader, Harold Jerome Leavy of Wofford Heights, will be conducted today (Aug. 3) at 2 p.m. at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella.
Officiating will be the Rev. Richard Magness of the Foursquare Gospel Church of Wofford Heights.
Interment will follow at the Kern Valley Cemetery ..
Leavy died at home July 30 from cancer. He was 48.
A 12-year resident of the valley, Leavy was active in the Lions Club and Elks Lodge. He was also a member of the Bellflower Oddfellows Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Eloise; two daughters-Hallie Leavy of Wof- ford Heights and Mary Ellen Spradlin of Mt. Mesa; three brothers, Robert Leavy of Downey, Donald Leavy and James Leavy, both of Illinois; one sister, Marie Bruckner of Fullerton; and one grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted July 31 at Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Erle William Marten, 75, of Lake Isabella.
A retired engineer, Marten lived In the Kern River Valley for four years.
He Is survived by his wife, Bertha; one son, Eugene Marten of Lomita; and one daughter, Helen Marten, a missionary in New Guinea.

Hillman Rosary Is Today
Rosary services are scheduled tonight (Thursday) for Richard Hill- man, 34, local real estate developer, at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield.
Hillman was allegedly shot and killed Tuesday by Joe Salis, promi- nent Bakersfield real estate developer in the parking lot of the Rarnada Inn, Bakersfield.
According to Charles McElfresh, the deceased's brother-in-law who lives in Wofford Heights, friends are invited to the services and also to the Mass set Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1515 Baker Street, Bakersfield. Father Patrick Hannon will officiate.
Surviving the deceased are his widow, Barbara; six children, Tom- my, Terri, Jennifer, Janie, Juli and Lauri; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hillman of La Mirada; a brother, James Hillman of Whittier; a sister, Mrs. Joann McElfresh of Wofford Helghts and a grandmother, Mrs. Roxsey McShane of Long Beach.
According to reports, Hillman was struck four times with bullets from a .38 cal handgun.
Salis is in custody. He did not offer any resistance.

FRANCIS BAHIAS
Former Valley Resident Dies
Francis Lee Bahan, the first owner of Kern Valley Drug, died July 21 in San Luis Obispo. He was 67.
He is buried in the Oakwood Cemetary in Chatsworth.
Mrs. Bahan said her husband died of a lingering illness at the Hacienda Convalescent Hospital in San Luis Obispo.
Bahan had lived in the area for 10 years. He opened the first drug store in the Kern River Valley in 1955. He had been a leader in the Oddfellows.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, of 260 Elks Lane, Space 8, San Luis Obispo.

Funeral services were to have been conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Foursquare Church in Wofford Helghts for Harry Glosch who died of cancer Sept. 2 at the Kern Valley Hospital. He was 66.
Glosch was to have been buried in the Kern River Valley Cemetary.
Owner of the Lakeview Guest Home in Wofford Heights, Glosch was a member of the Wofford Heights Chamber of Commerce and the Foursquare Church. He is survived by his wife, Helen of Wofford Heights; three sons: LeRoy Vick of Ridgecrest Marvin Rife of Ohio; and Eugene Glosch of Randsberg; and a brother Emil Glosch of Ohio; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Requim mass was conducted Sept. 5 at St. Jude's Catholic Church for Edward Steiner of Wofford Heights who died of cancer Sept. 1 in the Sepulveda Veterans Hospital. He was 68.
He was buried in the Kern River Valley Cemetary.
Steiner lived in California for 38 years and in the valley for several years. He was transported to the veterans hospital about four months ago.
He is survived by his wife, Cinderella, of Wofford Heights; two brothers: Vernon Steiners of Paris, and Harold Steiners of Chatsworth; two sisters, Alfie Schmitz of Washing- ton, and Shirley Quering of San Francisco.

Colby Funeral Services Held
Funeral services were conducted Sept. 7 for Carroll E. Colby of Lake Isabella, who died Sept. 4 in a Bakersfield Hospital. He was 53.
The services, conducted by Dr. Ken Brouse of the First Baptist Church, were held in Hillcrest Memorial Chapel. Colby was buried in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
A native of Wells, Maine, Colby had been a resident of Kern County for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Anna, of Lake Isabella; four daughters, Gayle Beck of Bakersfield, Gracia Slater of Potter Valley, Jean Foster of Bakers- field, and Gyron Obrian of Hawaii; four sons, Glenn Colby of Inyokern, Gregory Colby of Idaho, and Gary and Guy Colby of Bakersfield; and 10 grandchildren.
Collin's Death
Jack Collins, a Lake Isabella resident, died of natural causes Aug. 28 in a San Gabriel hospital. He was 64.
Mr. and Mrs. Colhus have been part-time residents of the valley for the past 10 years and have stayed at Mt. Mesa Trailer Court. They moved here permanently five months ago. Their home was formerly in South Gate, where Collins was a member of John Cardinal Glennon Knights of Columbus No. 2996 and a past Faithful Navigator of St. John Bosco General Assembly.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa, of Lake Isabella; a son, Jack Collins, of South Gate; and a daughter, Lorraine Johnson, of Alhambra; and three grandchildren.

Valley Man's Death Told
Funeral services were conducted Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. at Halley Olson Funeral Home in Lancaster for Robert T. Rivers who died Sept 8 of severe multiple body injuries suffered In an auto accident Sept. 7.
He was taken to Kern Valley Hospital, where he regained con- sciousness. The next morning he died enroute to Kern General Hospital in Bakersfield. Rivers was buried in Joshua Memorial Park in Lancaster. A retired aircraft engineer, Rivers had been living at Rock Haven Trailer Courts In Wofford Heights. Born in Minnesota Oct. 27, 1917, he was a Kern County resident tor 242 years, and a resident of California for 26 years.

Funeral services were conducted Sept. 9 at Lawncrest Chapel In Redding, Calif. for Jim Reed who died of head injuries suffered In an auto accident Sept. 6. He was 32.
Reed was buried in Lawncrest Memorial Park in Redding. A resident of Lake Isabella he was a logger for Kern County for 21/2 years. Prior to that time, he ran a milk route for McCalls Dairy in Redding. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Crawford of Redding; two children: Angela Reed of Redding; and James Craig Reed of San Jose.

Services Held for Mrs. Freels
Services were held Oct. 9 for Mrs. Barrett Freels who died Oct. 4 in Latterman General Hospital in San Francisco of a long term illness. Services were conducted by the Rev. Dale Brown at the Kern Valley chapel. Mrs. Freels was buried in Kern Valley Cemetery.
Mrs. Freels was born in Bloomfield, Iowa, Sept. 5, 1914. She has been a resident of California for five years.
Manager of Mount-N-Lake Motel in Wofford Heights, Mrs. Freels was living with her husband in Southlake Estates up until she was transfered to Latterman General Hospital, where she spent her last two weeks.
She is survived by her husband, Barrett Freels of Southlake Estates; a son, Robert Freels of San Diego; a daughter, Diana Marks of Mt. Mesa; a brother, Harold Kimble of Sacra- mento; her father Charlie Kimble; and 3 grandchildren.
Winters' Death
Graveside services at Rose Hills in Whittier were held Oct. 17 for John Winters of Wofford Heights who died Oct. 13 In Kern Valley Hospital.
Winters was born in New York Oct. 30, 1894. He was a machinist for the city of Los Angeles, and after he retired he moved to the Valley where he made his home for 3 years.
Winters was 77 years old at the time of death. He is survived by his wife, Ellen of Wofford Heights.
Burial Held for Dr. Thompson
Dr. Harry Thompson Jr., a tormier Kern Valley resident who died Oct. 4. was given a military burial at the old cemetery in Kernville Oct. 7.
Thompson, a veternarian, died in a Mountain View hospital after a long Illness. He was 46.
The graveside services were con- ducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7665, assisted by the post auxiliary, World War I Barracks 1841 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 54.
A native Californian, Thompson lived and worked in the Kern River Valley when he was a young man. He enjoyed hunting and fishing In the mountains.
He is survived by his wife, Maryanne, of Sunnyvale; his daugh- ter, Laurle Thompson of Oregon; three sons, Michael Thompson and Ronald and Steve Jones, all of Sunnyvale; his father, Dr. Harry S. Thompson Sr. of Walnut Creek, and his mother, Mrs. Mae Edwards of Kernville.
He is also survived by his brother, Allen Thompson of Walnut Creek, and his sister, Mrs. Virginia Robb of Texas.

Mrs. Ahagan's Death Told
Rosary was said Oct. 20 at Utter Mckinley Mortuary for Betty Ahagan who died of natural causes Oct. 17 at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills. Burial was held Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. in Mission Hills. She was 70 years old.
Ahagan was born in Annapolis, Ind. She has been a resident of California for 30 years, and a Kern Valley resident for 6 years. She owned the Serhagens Little Rock Resort down near Los Angeles, but had been living on Rlo Vista Drive in Kernville up until her death.
Heart Attack Kills Chandler
Services were conducted Oct. 27 at Valley Mortuary for Carl B. Chandler who died Oct. 23 in Mercy San Juan Hospital In Carmichael. He was 66 years old. The services werc conduct- ed by the Rev. Dale Brown, and intermment was at Rose Hills in Whittier.
Chandler was born in Indiana in March of 1906. Ile has lived in California for 32 years. Shortly after his retirement from Sargeant Engi- neer Inc., he moved into the valley where he has resided for many years.

Funeral services were held Nov 15 at Valley Mortuary chapel tor William Larsen who died in Kern Valley Hospital Nov 13 of a heart attack. The services were conducted by the Rev. Willard Vanfossen. Larsen was 80 years old. He was buried in Kern River Valley Ceme- tery.
Larsen was born in Shelby, Iowa, Jan. 23, 1892. He was a retired self employed truck driver for the Los Angeles area. He has lived three years in the valley with his son at the Capri Motel in Wofford Heights.

Father Harry Edwall of the San Pedro Episcopal Church will officiate. Internment will follow in Kern Valley Cemetery .
Mrs. DeBaugh was born in Gales- burg, Ill. in 1926 and educated in Galesburg schools. She had lived in Kern Valley for 19 years and had served the Kernville Union School District for 18 years as secretary to the superintendent.
Mrs. DeBaugh is survived by her husband, Paul DeBaugh, of Kernville; her mother, Fern Olsen, of Knoxville, Ill .; and one brother Forrest Olsen, of Phoenix, Ariz.
In honor of Mrs. DeBaugh, the Kern Valley Golf Course will be closed Nov. 30 from noon on.

Funeral services were conducted Nov. 13 for Louis E. Miller, 71 of Squirrel Mountain Valley at Pierce Brothers-Snyder Chapel in Inglewood. The Rev. Dale Brown of the First Baptist Church in Lake Isabella officiated at the services. Internment followed at the Inglewood Park Cemetery.
Miller died of kidney failure at the Kern Valley Hospital on Nov. 11. Miller was born in Welfleet, Neb. on July 23, 1901. He lived in California for 38 years and operated a grocery store in Los Angeles. He moved to the Kern River Valley in 1969 after he had retired.

Funeral services werc to have been held Wednesday at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Edwin Shaw Jr., 52, who died Nov. 18 at his home in Wofford Heights.

Shaw was born in Alabama May 6, 1920. He was a retired superintendent at the Naval Weapons Center in China Lake. He moved to the valley shortly after his retirement, where he has resided in Wofford Heights. Shaw has lived in California for 34 years, and in Kern County 18 years.
Shaw is survived by his wife Marilyn; four daughters, Sandra, Patricia. C'arrian, and Dlane: one brother. Archie; his mother Flora Shaw; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Nov. 21 at Kern River Valley Cemetery for Harold Leistner, 53, of Wofford Helghts who died of a heart attack Nov. 15 in Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield.

Leistner was born in Hemet, Calif. March 8. 1919.

Mrs. Hughes was born in New Britaim, Conn. Jan. 15, 1901. She has lived in California 15 years and in the valley 7 years. Since the death of her husband two years ago, she has lived with the Rev. Colberg, a former valley resident was born Dec. 20, 1887 in Kleintuchen, Germany He was a retired long- shoreman from Los Angeles when he first moved to the valley. He lived in Kernville for many years, although he had lived in Sacramento for the past seven years. He had been residing at the Rio Linda Mansion. a guest home in Rio Linda.
He is survived by his daughter, Heldegarde Melencheck of Sacramento.

Willard Vanfossen. Weeks was born in California on Jan. 27, 1902. He was formerly employed as an equipment operator for the Los Angeles County Road Department. Upon retirement he moved to the valley and has spent his last 8 years in Kernville. He was 70 years old. Graveside services were conducted Dec. 16 at Kern Valley Cemetery for Nacogdoches Murphy, 72, who died Dec. 9 of natural causes at his residence. Father Murphy of St. Judes Catholic Church officiated.
Murphy was born on an Arizona Indian reservation Oct. 13, 1900. He served in the United States Air Force during World War I and World War II. He was also a retired stunt actor. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 20, the Veterans of Foreign War 7665 in Lake Isabella, and the Screen Actors Guild. Murphy had lived in Kern County 56 years.
He was found dead in his apartment at the northwest corner of Steenson and Alta Sierra by James Crump and landlady Gertic Newman.

Graveside funeral services for Effie Greenwood, a former valley resident, were conducted Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Kern Valley Cemetery. The Rev. Louis Gerdes, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Kernville officiated.
Mrs. Greenwood died of natural causes Dec. 18 at Hacienda Conval- scent Hospital in Porterville. Her death came just eight days after her husband, Theofore, died of natural causes. He was buried Dec. 13 at Kern Valley Cemetery. The Rev. Gerdes officiated.
Greenwood was born in Peoria, Ill. on July 25, 1886. He retired from Kenicott Copper Corporation in 1951. Mrs. Greenwood was born in Fort Worth, Texas on July 24, 1889. The couple moved to the Kern River Valley in 1954 and stayed until 1968. They lived between Kernville and Fairview.
They are survived by four sons; Robert Greenwood of Kernville, J.H. Greenwood of New Mexico, C.W. Greenwood of Arizona, and Harry Greenwood of Arkansas; two daugh- ters: Viola Culbreth of Porterville and Ola Mae Blum of Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 37 great grand children.

Catholic graveside services were conducted at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Dec. 13 for Nicholas Carey, 66, of Bakersfield, who died of cancer in Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield Dec. 11.

Swift was born in Brooklyn, New York May 21, 1885. He was a retired Methodist minister. He moved to the valley after retirement and had resided in Wofford Heights for the past two years. Swift was a member of the Four Square Church in Wofford Heights.
Swift is survived by his sister Grace Bebell of Colorado Springs; his daughter-in-law, Lorraine Swift of Wofford Heights; three grandchil- dren: Richard F. Swift of Wofford Heights; Joan Nielsen of Lancaster; and Linda Miller of Long Beach; and 12 great grandchildren.

Gentry was born in Fountain Run Kentucky June 13, 1906. He was the owner of a lumber yard in the valley. He has lived in Kern County the past 14 years and last resided at 3002 Higam in Lake Isabella. Gentry is survived by his wife, Pauline Gentry of Lake Isabella; his daughter, Mrs. John Hopkins of Groton, Conn .; and his sister, Audrey Bechtel of Kansas City, Mo. Gentry was pronounced dead on arrival at Kern Valley Hospital Dec. 15 after his car went down an embankment on Highway 178 near Isabella Marina Number 1 at about 10:50 a.m. and hit a boulder. His wife Pauline, 62, suffered thigh and hip injuries and was admitted to Kern Valley Hospital.
