Services were held Wednesday (Mar. 24) for Mrs. Carolina Knouse, 59. of 25 North Dr., Bod- fish. She died Friday of cancer in a Newhall convalescent home. Rev. Bryan Wilber officiated at Highland Chapel Methodist Church, Lake Isabella. Inter- ment at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery followed.


Mrs. Knouse moved here with her husband seven years ago from the San Fernando Valley. She was born in Saskatchewan, Canada.


She is survived by her hus- band, Dewitt; a sister, Elizabeth Mott of Fort Bragg; a brother, George Mclaughlin of Hartford, Conn .;; four daughters, Darlene Hatton of Newhall, and Bonnie Warren, Lois Stevenson and Patricia Berington, all of Saug- us; and a son, Terry W. Foster, Newhall.

Crawford was pres.dent ci Youngstown Sheet & Tube Corp., based in Los Angeles, for 24 vrars.


He bought the 12 000-acre Fay Ranch in 1935 trom Mrs. Alger non fat and actively engaged in


ranchers, residents and inta projects


Crawford was a former !», Anpcies Harbor Commissioner. pres.dont of the Wilshire Country Club 12 years and a member of the Petroleum Club and the California Club - in Los Angeles. He was a graduate of Cal Tech. with a degree in petroleum en- gineering.


His survivors include a son, Juhu, of the Crawford Ranch. Weldon: sister, Katheryn Fusch of Glendale, two grand- sons and three great grandsuns.

Last Rites for Thomas Noonen, 40, Sheraton Chef


Thomas C. Noonen, 40. of Kernville, died Mar. 26 in Mer- cy Hospital, Bakersfield.


Requicum Mass was held Hay (Mar. 29) at St. Jude's olic Church. Wofford .ghts, with Father Ralph Bel- luomini of Bakersfield officiat- ing. Interment was at Kern Riv- er Valley District Cemetery.


Noonen was an executive chef al the Sheraton Hotel, Columbus, Ohio, until six months ago when he came here to recuperate at the home of his sister, Mrs. Pat Hed. While chef at the Omaha Sheraton he conducted free cooking courses at Father Flan- agan's Boys' Town.


Besides Mrs. Hed, he is sur- vived by two sons, Thomas Noonen Jr. oi Huntington Beach; John Noonen of Tor- rence; two daughters, Miss Rita Marie Noonen Huntington Beach and Miss Julie Ann Noo- nen of Torrance; his mother, Mrs. Mary Noonen of Kernville; his father, Cletus Noonen of Los Angeles; three brothers, James of Hanford, Charles of the U. S. Navy in San Diego, Joseph T. of the U. S. Air Force in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

The first member of Chapter 54 of the Kern River Valley Disabled American Veterans to pass away was Charles Naggez- ger, who died in Korea Mar. 2S. His sister, Mrs. Bessie Snyder, also a DAV, flew there to be with him at his bedside. She will return here about April 20


Naggezger was an ordained Baptist minister and a major in the American Red Cros.

Henry L. Noah. $6, of Lake Isabella, ched April 9 in the R.dgecrest Community Hospital Services were held Tuesday (April 13) at Valley Mortuary with interment following at the Kern River District Cemetery Rev. Dale Brown of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella officiated.


Noah was a retired butcher and had lived in the Kern Valley the pas: 12 years.

Mrs. Lena Doniin, 89, Onyx Pioneer, Dies in Palo Alto


Mrs. Lena Fugitt Donlin, 89. who was born and raised in Onyx, died Mar. 29 in a private hospital in Palo Alto. Services and interment at Golden Gate Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, San Mateo, were held April 1. She was the daughter of Francis and Amanda Fugitt, pioneer Onyx ranchers, and left the Kern Valley in 1898 for Palo Alto following her marriage.


She is survived by a sister, Miss Nell Fugitt of Palo Alto and several nephews and nieces, including Mrs. Elizabeth Crowd- er of Kernville and Mrs. Harvey (Adeline) Malone, formerly of Kernville and now of Auberry.

Funeral Services For Carl Hester


Carl Kenneth Hester, 60, of Bodfish, a long time resident of Kern County, passed away April 14. He was employed for many years by Marathon Oil Co. and during World War II served in the U. S. Navy with the Sea Bees in Africa.


He was a native of Arkansas and moved to California at the age of five.


Mr. Hester is survived by his wife, Auda; two daughters, Car- lene Davidson of Montebello and Marilyn Skiby of LaVern; two brothers, James H. Hester of Houston, Tex., and Donald V. Hester of Montebello; and five grandchildren, Steve Davidson of Montebello, Denice Davidson, and Ronda, Karrin and Kenneth Skiby.


Services were held Saturday (April 17) at Valley Mortuary with interment at the Kern Riv- er Valley District Cemetery.


Edward G. (Pop) Davis, 70, Lake Isabella, Passes


Edward G. (Pop) Davis, 70. of 2305 Angler St., Lake Isa- bella, diod Friday (April 16) at his home. He was the former owner of the Broadway Brass Rail cabaret, 53rd and South Broadway, Los Angeles, and had lived in the Kern Valley the past five years.


Services were held Tuesday at Valley Mortuary with Rev. Wil- lard Vanfossen of the Kernville Methodist Church officiating. Graveside services were con- ducted at Kern River Valley Dis- trict Cemetery by VFW Post 7665.


He is survived by his widow. Verna of Lake Isabella; and two sisters, Mrs. T. M. Neher of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Mrs. J. N. Rae of San Francisco.

Cletus O. Noonen, 77, father of Mrs. Patricia Hed, Kern- ville, died April 23 in Los Ange- les of a heart attack.


Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday (April 30) at St. Jude's Catholic Church, Wofford Heights, with interment at Kern Valley District Cemetery fol. lowing.


In addition to Mrs. Hed, he is survived by three brothers, M. Sgt. Joseph D. of Cheyenne, Wyo .: Charles M. of San Diego and James L. of Hanford, 18 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.


Pamela Trotter, 19, Killed in Auto Accident


Pamela Susan Trotter, 19. of Wufford Heights, died in a Bak- ersfield ho pital Sunday (April 25) following an auto accident at Woody. She was a ski-lift op- erator at Squaw Valley


Services were held Wednes- day at Valley Mortuary with Rev Willard Vanfossen officiat- ing. She was buried at Kern River Valley District Cemetery. Survivors are her parents, Mr and Mrs. John Trotter of Wofford Heights, and three sis- ters. Lucretia Gindroz of Ben- cia. Vickie Russic of Hawthorne and Johnel Trotter of Wofford Heights.

Billie Carcthia Lieb, five. months old infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Lieb of Johnsondale. was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday (May 9) at the Kern Valley Hospital.


The cause of death was not immediately announced by the coroner's office.

Fisherman Harold Edmister, 72, Drowns in River


Graveside services were held Saturday at Kern River Valley District Cemetery for Harold C. Edinister, 72, retired tool and die maker. who drowned May 12 in the Kern River in Kern- ville while fishing. He lived at Sierra Trailer Park, Kernville.


His body was recovered by Gerald (Red) Beatty, George Buettner, Leon Tucker and Lloyd and Mike Moir, according to deputies


Edmister is survived by his wife, Vivian, and a brother. Ray Edmister of Tiffin, Ohio.


Services were conducted by Rev. Willard Vanfossen, and the arrangements were by Val- ley Mortuary.

The body of Edwin. (Doug) Gideon, 43, of Bodfish was re- covered Monday (May 24) from the forebay of the SCE power- plant at Borel. A coroner's in- · quest- confirmed he drowned in , the flume.

Services were held yesterday (May 26) in Van Nuys for Lester Cassel, 65, of Wofford Heights Trailer Park, who drowned May 12 near Tillie Creek in Isabella Lake. His body was recovered May 23.


Cassell was a retired meat outter who worked for Ralph's Markets in the Los Angeles area before his retirement here in 1968.


Survivors are his wife, Dor- othy; three daughters, Jean Sparks, Gaynell Lindquist a n d Lesta Hovey; and nine grand- children.


Interment was Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, and ar- rangements were by Praisewat- er Funeral Home, Van Nuys.

Roberta Lilly Killed in Delano Cycle Accident


Mrs. Roberta Lee Lilly, 23. of Bakersfield and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson of Kernville, was killed May 29 in a motorcycle accident ne ar Delano. She was a Kern Valley High School graduate.


Her services were held Wed- nesday at the Kernville Metho- dist Church with Rev. Willard Vanfossen officiating. Interment was at Kern Valley District Cemetery.

Mattie Moreland, Long-Time Piutes Resident, Passes


Mrs. Mattie (Martha) More- land, 76, a 33-year resident of the Moreland Lone Star Mine in the Piute Mountains died Satur- day of a heart attack.


Attempts at mouth-to-mouth re- suscitation by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Long and their son, Bob II, of Huntington Beach, failed when Mrs. Moreland was stricken at her mountain home.


The Longs, family friends, were instructed in resuscitation procedures by Bohn's Ambu- lance Service, Kernville, follow- ing a citizen's band distress call by Long to a Kem Valley member of REACT, the local emergency radio communica- tions organization.


Graveside services were held Wednesday (June 2) for Mrs. Moreland at Kern River Valley District Cemetery. Rev. Willard Vanfossen officiated. Arrange- ments were by Mish Funeral home, Oildalc.


She resided during recent win- ters in Kernville and Porterville.


For about 50 years she was a member of the Golden Rod Re- bekah Lodge of Porterville and was born at Success, Tulare County. Her father, Robert James, arrived in California in 1850 with a wagon train and in the 1890's worked at the Big Blue Mine near Old Kernville.


Her husband, Earl, worked the Moreland Lone Star from 1938 to 1968, when he passed away. The gold mine has been in the family since 1916.


She is survived by a son, Wil- liam Earl Moreland of Kern- ville; a daughter, Barbara Jean munities to be considered for grants. Balance of the funding would come from the formation of local sewerage districts.

Services were held June 1 at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Mrs. Edna Josephine Pitcher, 72, of Lake Isabella. She died May 29 in Westpark Hospital, Canoga Park. Rev. Dale Brown offic- iated, and interment followed at Kern River Valley District Cemetery.


She was a Kern Valley resi- dent the past two years. She was born in New York April 1, 1899.


Mrs. Pitcher is survived by her husband, Mandell; her fath er, Frank of New York; a son, Harland of Sun Valley; a daugh- ter, Mrs. Barbara Roberts of Sun Valley; three sisters, Mrs. Mabel Strates of Orlando, Fla . Mrs. Blanche Kennedy Branch Port, N.Y., and Mrs. Hazel McCovick of Orlando, Fla .; one grandchild; and one great grandchild.

Former Isabella Resident William Thill, 78, Dies


William John Thill, 78, a re- tired carpentar who resided in Lake Isabella from 1964 to 1969 and was known affectionately as "Pop" and "Old Bill," died July 1 in Bell Gardens Conval- escent Hospital.


Services were held yesterday (July 7) at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, with Rev. Sher- wood Eddy officiating.


He was a resident of Cali- fornia 48 years and was born in Montana.


Mr. Thill's survivors are a son, William R. Thill of Lyn- wood; a daughter, Florence M. Fink of Downey; five grand- children; and six great-grand- children.

Bencoma was the apparent victim of a felony hit-and-run driver Sunday morning (July 4) three miles east of Weldon. tle was pronounced dead on arrival at Kern Valley Hospital.

Killed in a high speed auto collision Sunday (July 18) o n Hwy. 178 near the Onyx Store was Brian Hunter Whalen, 20, of Bodfish. He was a 1968 grad- vate of Kern Valley High School.


Driver of the car in which he was a passenger is Patrick John Muns. 22. of Lake Isabella. he is in critical condition at Kern General Hospital, Bakers- ficld. following major internal surgery Monday.


The CHP said their car cross- eu the center line of the road and crashed into an auto driven by Nathan Clark Mace, 33. of Lake Isabella

Services were held Tuesday at Stone & Myers Mortuary, Tor- rance, with interment following at Pacific Crest Cemetery. Re- nrda Beach.


Mr. McCoy was a retired ma- thrust who had been employed by Douglas Aircraft. He had re- sent in the Kern Valley area der past six months. He was born in Canton, Ga., in 1904.

He was born in Utah in 1943 and engaged in plumbing con- rracting in the Santa Monica and Redondo Beach areas for 48 years.


Survivors are his wife, Mary Helen of Wofford Heights: two Jons. Howard of Hermosa Beach and Harold uf Torrance: three daughters, Faye Herbert of Manhattan Beach, Lulu Mas Remington of Venice and Tutti! Wart of Torrance: 15 grand- children and three great-grand- children.

Mrs. Kirkwood was a Kern Valley resident the past seven. years.


She is survived by her hus band. John: two daughters Mary Keca of Lake Isabella, and Virginia Heneley of Culver City: a sister. Corrine Sinith of Bak- ersfield: and five grandchildren

OBITUARY


Kern Valley Mourns Death of Judge Louis W. Howell


One of the Kern River Val- lev's best known and most lik- ed public figures was laid io rest at the Kern River Valley District Cemetery yesterday (Aug. 11.)


He is Judge Louis W. Howell, 54, of the Kern River-Rand Ju- dicial District and a six - year resident of Lake Isabella.


He was stricken with a heart attack on Hwy. 178 Friday after. noon while driving home from court. He was pronounced dead at the Kern Valley Hospital about 5 p.m.


A large gathering of saddened friends and relatives attended the graveside services which were conducted hy officers of the Kern Valley Elks Lodge, of which he was a member.


Also in attendance were more than 40 uniformed officers of


the Kern County Sheriff's Dep :.. the Calif. Highway Patrol and the Oceanside Police Dept.


Judge Howell was a former president of the Kern County Judges. Constables and Marsh- als' Assoc. and the Kern Valley Rodeo Assoc. He also was an active member of the Kern Val. lev Masons.


He was much in demand by Incal organizations as an install- ing officer and master-of-cere- monies.


Judge Howell retired as a police officer from the Ocean- side Police Dept. in 1963 and for a short time thereafter opera :- ed a antiques shop in Rands- burg.
