Edward Leon Hazlett Edward Leon Hazlett passed away at his home in South Lake on Nov. 2, 1984, after a long illness. He was preceded In death by his wife of 40 years, Josephine.


He was a life member of American Legion Post 261, El Monte, and honor member of a post in West Covina. Hazelett was past president of Post 261 and served in several other capacities. He was also a member of Eagles Aerie No. 3156, Lake Isabella, and other civic clube in El Monte.


Survivors include one daughter, Elanor Weekly; three sisters, Katherine Jarvis, Clara Klank and Edna Briese, all of Trenton, N.J .; three brothers, Frank Weiss, Wilber Welas and LeRoy Hauck; sisters-In- law Edna Beckner, Billie Hewitt and Hope Mason; two nieces and grandchildren.


Hazlett was born Jan. 4, 1908, in Trenton, son of Charles and Hannah Elizabeth Hazlett.


Graveside funeral was Nov. 11 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Covina. Legion Post 261 and the West Covina Post provided military rites.

Lena Undergrove


Mrs. Lena (Coughran) Undergrove, 83, widow of Thomas B. Undergrove, 3099 Reifsnyder Road, Gilbertsville, died Monday morning in Pottstown memorial Medical Center, Boyertown, where she had been a patient since Oct. 4.


Born in Lorraine, she was 8 daughter of the late Edward and Eliza ( Williams) Coughran.


She was a member of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, Boyertown.

ROBERT G. SHERMAN


A graveside funeral service was conducted at the Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights, for Robert G. "Pop" Sherman of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. Monsignor Denis J. Doherty, pastor of St. Jude's Parish Church. Sherman passed away at his home Nov. 10. Sherman was a graduate of Assumption College in his native Ontario, Canada. He participated in track and field athletics, representing Canada in the Olympic Games of 1930. He was also the owner of the largest nightclub in Ontario.


Before W.W. II, Sherman was a commercial pilot in Canada. During the war he served with the RCAF as a navigation instructor until May, 1945.


Following the war, he pursued a career as an aerospace chemist, working in the field of dry lubricants.


Sherman moved to California in the late 40's and had been a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past 9 years.


He is survived by his son, Michael, of Lake Isabella; daughter, Gail Dye of Bakersfield; brothers, Blake and Jack of Canada; sisters Dorothy Sherman of Arizona, Muriel Futia of Canada, Mrs. E,J. Nelson of Michigan, Tish Duneah of Canada and three grandchildren. Born Sept. 5, 1911, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Sherman was 73. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary, Lake Isabella.

Graveside funeral services were conducted Monday, Nov. 26 at Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights for Dora Pearl Scott of Southlake Estates. Officiating was C.R. "Bunch" Blankenship, member of the United Methodist Church, Kernville. Mrs. Scott passed away Nov. 23 at Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charlie James Scott of Southlake Estates; mother Mary Ellen Black of Sparks, Nevada; son Ronald of Rio Vista, CA., Fred of Onyx, Archie of Long Beach, Bob of Torrance; brothers Leslie Black of Sparks, Nevada, Delbert Black of Seattle, Wash .; sisters Velma Steinfeldt of Arroyo Grande, May Holland of Scramento; 10 grandchildren and sixteen great- grandchildren. EARL KRAL


Graveside funeral services were conducted Nov. 23 at Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights for Earl Kral of Weldon. Officiating was Rev. Bill Gibson, chaplain of the Kern River Valley Chapter 54 of the Disabled American Veterans. Kral passed away Nov. 20 at San Joaquin Community Hospital in Bakersfield. He is survived by his wife Ursula of Weldon; daughter Nancy of Ridgecrest; stepsons Glen Luden and Steven Luden of Oregon, Thomas Luden of Weldon; daughter Kathleen Campbell of Long Beach; foster mother Julia Kral of New York; brother Charles Kral of Missouri and nine grandchildren. During World War II Earl Kral served with the U. S. Army in Northern France and the Rhineland as a heavy truck driver. He had been a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past 7 years and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7665, Kern River Valley. Military honors were rendered at graveside by the Kern River Valley Veterans Council and VFW Post 7665, Jesse E. Wright, chaplain. Graveside funeral services were conducted Friday, Nov. 16 at Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights, for Jack R. Clark of Kernville,


Officiating was Pastor Jerry Ruff of the Foursquare Gospel Church of Wofford Heights.


Clark passed away in San Luis Obispo on Nov. 11.


He is preceeded in death by his wife Debra Ann, deceased June 15, 1984. He is survived by his father Ron of Kernville; brothers Vern and Ron; grandmothers Josephine Clark and Dovie Blair; six nieces and one nephew.


Jack Clark was a 1966 graduate of Kern Valley High School and was an employee of the U.S. Forest Service until he was retired in 1982. Born May 22, 1948 in Bakersfield, CA., Jach Ray Clark was 36 years of age.

NELLIE L. STEWART


Nellie L. Stewart, 79, of 2404 Ronita Lane, Lake Isabella, died Monday, Nov. 12, 1984 while in Florida.


Born in Rogers, Ark., she had been a Kern Valley resident for eight years.


She was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ, Lake Isabella.


Survivors include husband,

Graveside services were held at Hillcrest Memorial Park at 10 a.m. Nov. 16, 1984, for Alva N. Atchley, 82, who passed away Nov. 13, 1984 in Bakersfield.


Rev. E.F. "Bud" Frye officiated. Atchley was born in Leola, Ark. Dec. 10, 1901, and resided in Lake Isabella with his wife, Henrietta, for the past 15 years.


He was a member of the Kern Valley Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge of Wofford Heights and Masonic Lodge of Holly Springs, Ark.


Lee D. Ginter Lee D. Ginter of Lake Isabella passed away on the morning of Nov. at Ridgecrest Community Hospital, Ridgecrest. He is survived by his wife Ruth of Lake Isabella; son Don of Downey; daughter Maryann Hackett of Santa Monica; brothers Charles and Noel both of

A graveside funeral service was conducted at Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wotford Heights, on Tuesday, Nov. 27 for Mae Littlefield of Weldon. Mrs. Littlefield passed away Nov. 24 at Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


She is survived by her husband Glynn of Weldon; son Glynn, Jr. of Utah; grandson Gary Littlefield of Utah; sisters Mrs. David Adare of Arkansas, Martha of Arkansas, Pearl Johnson of Wisconsin, and Alice Batten of Arkansas.


Born Dec. 3, 1919 in Illinois, Mae Littlefield was 64 years of age. Officiating at the graveside was Rev. Donald Roulsten, Weldon Methodist Church.

James F. Benak


Mass of Christian burial was conducted Wed., Nov. 21 at St. Jude Parish Church, Wofford Heights, for James F. Benak of Lake Isabella.


Officiating at the mass and at the rosary held at St. Jude's on the evening of Nov. 20 was Reverend Monsignor Denis J. Doherty, pastor of St. Jude Parish Catholic Church.


Mr. Benak passed away Nov. 17 at Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield after illness.


He is survived by his wife of 46 years Irma of Lake Isabella; daughters Elizabeth Mulholland and husband Tom of Simi Valley; Arden Mann and husband Edward of Glendale; granddaughters Arianna and Marissa Mulholland of Siml and grandson Wesley Mann of Glendale; two sisters, Vlasta Zahradka and Helen Benak reside in Gian Ellyn, nlinolg.


Born April 10, 1914 in Chicago, Cook County, Ilinois, James Frank Benak was 70 years of age.

Nicholas Hupka


Nicholas Hupka died at his home in Lake Isabella Nov. 16, 1984, after a brief illness. He was born in Bluebell, Ohio, May 11, 1921.


Hupka retired from government service December, 1976. He served five years in the United States Army in World War II and twenty-eight years as a civil service employee at the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake.


He is survived by his wife, Em, of Lake Isabella; daughters Gina Hupka, Rockville. Utah: son Paul and wife Linda of Ridgecrest; granddaughters Jennifer and Sadie Hupka, Arroyo Grande; and uncles Frank and Jack Kudlow of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Wheeling, West Virginia.


The family extends a welcome to relatives and friends whose Lives have been touched by Nick, to join them in the celebration of his life on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m., at the family home, 4120 Huth Street, Lakeland Estates tract, Lake Isabella.

Krill passed away Nov. 9 at Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


He is preceeded in death by his sister Louise Fiestas; brothers David and Edward Krill. Krill was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Myrtle Creek.

Graveside funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 3 at Kern River Valley Cemetery for Leo McQuary of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Kern River Valley Moose Lodge No. 498. McQuary passed away Nov. 29 at Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


McQuary is preceeded in death by his wife Rita, deceased in 1981, and survived by his daughter Betty Graff of Riverside; grandson Darren Graff. also of Riverside; sisters Ethylene Duthridge and Opal Holley, both of California; brothers George McQuary and Jim McQuary, both of California. Several survivors of Lee Ginter were omitted from the obituary published last week for Lee Ginter, Lake Isabella.

He had lived in Lake Isabella 18 years after working for Cal Gas for 10 years and retiring in 1981.

Leurena B. Greene A gravealde funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, for Leurena B. Greene of Monterey Park. A former resident of Lake Isabella, Mrs. Greene passed away Nov. 9 in Monterey Park.


Officiating at the graveside was Reverend H.B. Long, representing the Mountain View Southern Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.


Mrs. Greene is preceeded in death by her husband Louis Phillip "Phil" Greene, deceased July 28, 1975, and survived by her son Robert G. Greene of Monterey Park; daughter Louise Hunter of Texas; brother Carl of Monterey Park; four grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.


Mrs. Greene was a long-time resident of Lake Isabella and was a member of the Mt. View Southern Baptist Church, the Order of the Golden Slipper and the 55 Plus Club, of which she was a charter member.


Born 1917 in Indiana, Leurena B. Greene was 77 years of age.

Richard R. Sulder Richard R. Snider of Wofford Heights passed away Nov. 28 at Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.

Helen Stella Art


Helen Stella Art, 71, a resident of Mt. Mesa for the past 12 years, died Dec. 2 in Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa, after a long illness. At the request of the deceased there were no funeral services. She was cremated in the Mish Funeral Home Crematory. Her ashes will be scattered at the edge of Lake Isabella as she wished they be, at a later date.


She had been a cashier for over 6 years and was last affiliated with Burroughs High School. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and she loved to fish and travel.


Survivors include her hsuband, Harold Lewis Art, Mt. Mesa; daughters Sandra Lee Art of Ridgecrest, Sonja Dee Art of San Diego and Helen Ray Boyer of Santee; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Mary Allyne Saurbaugh


A funeral service was conducted Friday, Dec. 14 at Valley Mortuary Chapel, Lake Isabella, for Mary Allyne Saurbaugh of Bodfish. Mrs. Saurbaugh passed away Dec. 11 at Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


Officiating at the services was Reverend John Zinck, associate pastor at First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella, and the Women's Auxiliary of Post 7685 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.


Mrs. Saurbaugh is survived by her husband of twenty-five years, Joseph M. Saurbaugh of Bodfish; daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Kenneth Hopgood of Santa Ana; son and daughter-in-law Edward and Ophelia Estes of Santa Clara; daughter Judith Ann Saurbaugh of Pittsburgh, Pa., five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.


Mary Allyne Saurbaugh was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of Post 7665 of the VFW for the past 12 years. She was active in the blood bank, the well baby clinic, and sewing for V.A. Hospital patients.


During the past few years she had helped her husband Joe with the presentation of the hunter safety course here in the Kern River Valley.


Born Oct. 6, 1903 in Dallas, Texas, Mary Allyne Saurbaugh was 81 years of age. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary. Interment of ashes at Evergreen Memorial Park, Merced, Ca.

Funeral services be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Valley Mortuary Chapel, Lake Isabella, for 7-day-old Warren Mason Kelley, Born Dec. 8 in Bakersfield.


Officiating at the chapel services and at the graveside will be Reverend Jim McGhee, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Kernville.


Infant Warren is survived by his parents Clyde and Connie Kelley of Wofford Heights, sisters April and Allyson, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Kelley of Kernville and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Tandle of Arkansas.

VALENTINE L. GREENE


Catholic memorial funeral rites were celebrated Wednesday at noon in the Mish Funeral Home, Oildale, for Valentine L. Greene, 67, of Wofford Heights, who died Dec. 10 in a Bakersfield hospital after a long illness.


Cremation was private in the Mish Funeral Home Crematorium with her ashes to be scattered over Lake Isabella at a later date.


A native of Los Angeles, she was born November 16, 1917, and had lived in this community for the past 15 years. She had been a homemaker her adult life and was a member of the Eagles Lodge Auxilliary at Mt. Mesa.


She leaves her husband, Carl Robert Greene of Wofford Heights; children Vicky Coleman of Venice and Tommy Tomeoni of Mar Vista; brothers Romo Fazzi of Temple City and Sunny Fazzi of Santa Monica; sisters Evelyn and Lillian, both of Long Beach, and five grandchildren.

Dorothy Sutherland died in Wofford Heights on Dec. 7, 1984. She is survived by her husband, Jerry, and her daughter, Dee Keeton. There is to be no services as she has been cremated and her ashes have been disposed of .

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 11 for Catherine L. Burton, 84, at Hillcrest Mortuary, Bakersfield. Mrs. Burton first come to the Kern River Valley in 1926 and lived here for 26 years before she retired and moved to Bakersfield. Mrs. Burton was born in Portland, Oregon, and was a member of the Distinguished Scott family from Portland, her great uncle having been Harvey W. Scott, the founding editor of the "Portland Oregonian" mewspaper. Her great aunt, Abigail Scott Duniway, was a leading figure in the 19th century women's suffrage movement of the Pacific Northwest. Upon arrival in Old Kernville to meet a friend for a hiking trip. she met and subsequently married Ben Burton in 1926. During World War II, Mrs. Burton served on the ration board in Old Kernville and was a member of the Methodist Church choir. She later worked for Lois Hanning at the Wofford Heights Market and for Helen Hite, owner of Helen's Gift Shop in Wofford Heights.


In 1965, Mr. and Mrs. Burton moved to Bakersfield to be near their daughter, Margaret Esponda. In addition to her daughter, she leaves a granddaughter, Carole Kuhn of Bakersfield, and a great- grandson, Derek Kuhn. also of Bakersfield.

OBITUARY


Dede Lela Karr


At the request of the deceased there were no funeral services and private cremation was held in the Mish Funeral Home Crematorium, and her ashes will be scattered In San Francisco Bay at a later date.


Mrs. Karr was a native of Sacramento and had lived in this community for a number of years. She died Dec. 15 in Kern Valley Hospital after a long illness.


She had been a cashier for over 10 years and had been affiliated with Smith's Bakery. She was a member of St. Jude's Parish in Wofford Heights and was an auxiliary member of the F.O. Eagles at Mt. Mesa, the Moose Lodge In Lake Isabella, and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights.


She had been an avid golfer.


She is survived by her husband A.J. Karr of Wofford Heights; her son, Carl Weisner of Richmond, three grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.


Centurian Memorial Society 18 in charge of all services.
