Two Killed In Plane Crash

Two Kern Valley men killed and another injured when their single- engine plane crashed Tuesday af- ternoon while on a search for a missing aircraft.

The search plane went down at about 1 p.m. in a mountainous area six miles north of Kernville in Tulare County.

Killed in crash were pilot Lance Warren, 47, of Wofford Heights, and observer Ray Mallory, 45, of Onyx.

A second observer, John Van Ren- sselaer, 30, of Wofford Helghta, sur- vived the wreck and was taken to Kern Valley Hospital and tran- sferred to Mercy Hospital in Baker- sfield at about 6 p.m.

Thunderstorms had moved into the area shortly after the crash, but it is unclear if rain and wind caused the plane to go down.

The men were part of the Kern County Sheriff's aerosquadron, a group of volunteers who search for lost hikers and others as well as missing planes. Their white and blue Turbo Cessna 208 struck ground in hilly terrain near Mountain Road 99

and Corral Creek.

According to Gene Nelson at the Kernville Airport, the plane took off on the search about 6 a.m. Tuesday and returned to the airport about 11 a.m. The group left again at 11:35 p.m. and the crash carne about 142 hours later.

Warren was termed a very skilled pilot and he and Mallory had flown together on many previous sear- ches.

Federal Aviation Administration officials and the National Transpor- tation Safety Board were expected to begin investigating the crash site Wednesday.

Warren's plane was one of 20 in the alr in search of John Linn, 52, of Bakersfield, who failed to return from a flight to Kernville for lunch on Saturday.

Linn left Kernville Airport about 12:30 p.m. on Satuday and has not been heard from since.

Van Rensselaer has received chest injuries and a inild concussion and was reported in critical but stable conditon Wednesday at 1 p.m.
