WILLIAM M. HOWARD


Graveside services were held Friday, January 11 at 1 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Sunrise Lawn for William Martin Howard 68, who passed away January 8 in Bakersfield. Elder H.T. Gray of the Primitive Baptist of McFarland officiated.


Mr. Howard was born in Vinson, Oklahoma November 27, 1916. He last worked for Superior Farms before his retirement. Mr. Howard was an avid fisherman and enjoyed tinkering with small things. He is survived by his wife Thelma; son George Howard of Pollock Pines, CA .; daughters Betty James and Lucy Thomas, both of Bakersfield; mother Goldie Howard of New Mexico; brothers Lloyd Howard and Bennie Howard, both of New Mexico and Lonnie Howard of Oregon; sister Elsie Arnold of New Mexico; three grandsons, and three granddaughters. BETTY HANSEN


A graveside funeral service was conducted Friday, Jan. 11 at Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights for Elizabeth E. "Betty" Hansen of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. Monsignor Daniel Lopez of St. Jude Parish Catholic Church. Mrs. Hansen passed away Jan. 8 at Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


She is survived by her husband Charles of Wofford Heights, and son Steven of San Leandro.


Mrs. Hansen was a member of the Ladies of the Elks and a member of the San Fernando Valley chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. a public service sorority. Betty was past president of the valley association of past presidents of Beta Sigma Phi. Betty was a caring and dedicated person who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.


Born March 6, 1921 in San Diego, Betty Hansen was 63 years of age.

PETE CASAS


A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Jude's Parish Catholic Church for Peter R. Casas of Longview Tract. Officiating at the mass and at the rosary, held Friday evening, was Monsignor Anthoney G. Herdegen, pastor of St. Jude's Parish. Casas passed away Feb. 13 at Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of Longview; Daughter, Barbara Reeder of Ontario; son Alan of Los Angeles; Grandsons, Mark Casas and Michael Gaynor; brothers, Charles of Fullerton, Ray of La Mirada and Louie of Los Angeles; a sister Mary Blair of Corona. Casas was a member of St. Jude's Parish, Knights of Columbus "Our Lady of the Lake" Chapter 2972 and the St. Veincent De Paul Society. He was born Sept. 18, 1911, in Flagstaff, Ariz.


Interment at resurrection cemetery, San Gabriel, where graveside prayer was offered by Father William Peterson of St. Mary's of Assumption, Whittier. Arrangements by Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.

Kathryn Emily "Kitty" Shelton of Lake Isabella passed away Feb. 20 at the Valley Medical Center, Fresno. She is survived by her husband, Samuel S. of Lake Isabella; sister Paul Diems of Beaver, Utah; sons Wayne Bertram of Lake Isabella, Richard Bertram of Clovis; daughter Karen Williams; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


Born May 14, 1919, in Oakland, Shelton was 65.

NORMAN R. BUZBY


Memorial services were held Feb. 25 at Sunnyside Masonic Temple, Hawthorne, for Norman R. Buzby.


He was born June 7, 1928, in Philadelphia, Penn., and passed away Feb. 20, 1985, at UCI.A Medical Center.


Survivors include his wife. Betty ; two daughters, Dottie Snyder of Hermosa Beach and Kathy Zamora of Torrance; 1 granddaughter, Crystal Snyder


Buzby lived in Wofford Heights for the past seven years and was retired from the Hawthorne Fire Department. He was a member of the Kern River Valley Masonic Lodge No. 827, Kern River Valley Chapter 643 Order of Eastern Star, Elks Lodge No. 2358 and past patron of the Sunnyside Chapter 436 Order of Eastern Star, Hawthorne.


Memorial services will be held at the Kern River Valley Masonic lodge Sunday, March 3, at 11 a.m. The family requests in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Heart Fund.

A funeral service was conducted Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Forest Lawn Cemetery near Sheboygan, Forest County. Wisc .. for Vera Kramer of Bodfish.


Mrs. Kramer passed away Feb. 22 at the Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa


Officiating at the services was Vernon Jaybergh, pastor of the United Church of Christ, Sheboygan, Wisc.


She is preceeded in death by her husband, Walter A. Kramer, who died in 1969. Survivors include a brother. Carl Hurtienne of Sheboygan and a son, Ray, of Bakersfield.

Kenneth Grant. Wofford Heights, passed away Feb. 19 at the Kern Valley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


He was preceeded in death by his wife, Mary. Survivors include a son, Jack, of Hawaii, and two grandchildren


Born Aug. 11, 1893, in British Columbia, Canada, Grant was 91.

JOE ROSENZWEIG


A funeral service was conducted at Grace Chapel of the Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, for Joseph Rosenzweig of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. Dan Newhall, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Inglewood.


Rosenzweig passed away Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elsie, of Wofford Heights; brothers, George of Sun City, Johnny of Oregon and Frank of Wofford Heights: sisters, Mary of Gardena, Barbara of Gardena, Rose and Betty, both of Downey.


Rosenzweig was retired front McDonnel-Douglas and had lived in the Kern River Valley since 1968


Born March 16, 1906 in Indianhead, Sakatchewan, Canada, Joseph Rosenzweig was 78.

JACK HENSLEY


A funeral service was conducted Friday March 1 at the Kern River Valley cemetery for Andrew Jackson "Jack" Hensley, Jr., of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Joel Astor of Valley Mortuary.


Mr. Hensley passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital Tuesday, Feb. 26.


He is survived by his sisters, Trudy Goff and Margie Cox; brothers, Chuck, Willis and Eli; nephew, Teve Hensley and good friends Mary and Cecilia Wisniewski.


Hensley was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy. Born Oct. 16, 1913, in Kansas City, he was 7].


Military honors rendered at graveside by the Kern River Valley Veterans Council, Jesse Wright, Chaplain.

ALLAN "Mac" McGUIRE


Funeral services were held for Allan "Mac" McGuire who died Friday, Feb. 15.


McGuire homesteaded property in Isabella Highlands in 1957. McGuire Boulevard was named after him. He built his home in Isabella and lived there until 1980, when he moved to Kernville.


McGuire retired from his welding business in 1973.


He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Kernville; son, Mark, of Lake Isabella; daughter, Maryann Bennett of Santa Monica; brothers, Travis, Delbert and Gene and sisters, Virginia and Thelma, of Texas.


McGuire was a charter member of Kern Valley Elks Lodge.


Born in Altus, Oklahoma in 1915, Allan McGuire was 70.

BUD FENNER


A funeral service was conducted Monday, March 11, at the Kern Valley cemetery for W.G. "Bud" Fenner of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Rev. Francis Edge, Pastor of the Bodfish Pentecostal Church of God.


Mr. Fenner died suddenly while working during the evening of March 7 in Lake Isabella.


He is survived by his wife, Gail, of Wofford Heights; son Richard, of Lake Isabella; daughters Mary Jane Kuhn of Kingman, Ariz., Thorine Wheeler of West Covina, Marilyn Thompson of San luis Obispo; grandchildren Richard Jr., Michael, Ribert, Janet, Wayne, Laurie, Kimberly, Martine, Nicholas, Jeffrey and great-grandson Joshua Ryan "Jr." Fenner.


Fenner was known in the Kern Valley as an auto mechanic and tow truck operator. Many knew hint by his C.B. handle "Double 1 .. "


Born June 18, 1922, in Deep, North Dakota, Bud Fenner was 62.

Ernest J. Graf of Wofford Heights passed away March 7 at home after an illness.


He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Wofford Heights and daughter, Linda Shropshire.

CLARENCE "LEFTY" DENNISON


Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 5, in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Bakersfield for Clarence "Lefty" Deunison of Onyx, who passed away March 1 in Lake Isabella. The Rev. Don Rouisten of Weldon United Methodist Church, officiated.


Mr. Dennison, a native of Blooming Rose, Mo, had resided in Kern County since 1916. He had been a rancher for the Rudnick Trust in Onyx for 33 years.

A graveside funeral service was conducted Friday, March 15, at the Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights, for V.O. Daniels of Bodfish.


Officiating was pastor James Lee, Church of the Nazarene, Lake Isabella.


Daniels passed away March 13 at his home in Bodfish. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Frances, of Bodfish; son, Burton of Tuscon; daughter, Carol Willard of Hillsboro, Ore., and four grandchildren.


Daniels was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army. He was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Lansing, Mich.

A graveside funeral service was conducted Saturday, March 16, at the Kern Valley Cemetery for Bevery Dyer of Onyx. Officiating was Monsignor Anthony G. Herdegen, pastor of St. Jude's Parish Catholic Church, Wofford heights.


Mrs. Dyer passed away March 14 at her home.


She is survived by her husband, Robert K. Dyer of Onyx; daughters, susan Bernard of Nevada, Vicky Almost, Oregon, Cecilia Burnam of Mt. View; mother, Katherine Helstrup of San Pablo; sisters, Joyce Torres of Martinez, Linda Ramirez of San Pablo, Bonnie Shoemaker of New, Judy Ver Hagen of Milpitas and one grandchild, Michael, of Oregon.


Beverly was formerly employed at Ridgecrest Community Hospital and at Kern Valley Hospital.

NORA CECILE JOHNSON


Funeral services were conducted Jan. 30 at the Isabella Baptist Church In Lake Isabella for Nora Cecile Johnson. Officiating was Rev. David Snow.


"Aunt" Cecile, as she was known to her many friends and neighbors, passed away Jan. 26 after a short illness at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield. She was 92.


She is survived by her sister Bessie Pletcher, Van Nuys, and four neices, Henrietta Ritter, Sacramento, Mozelle Allen, Van Nuys, and Betty Fleming and Jeanette Rogers of Kernville.


Born Sept. 5, 1892, in Haddem, Kansas, she was the youngest of six children.


Interment was held at the Kern River Valley Cemetery.

Lucille Denson of South Lake passed away March 22 at Kern Valley Hospital.


She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Kenneth of South Lake; sons Kenneth, Jr. of Grass Valley, Harold of Oregon; sister Patricia Skaggs of Texas and three grandchildren.


Mrs. Denson had resided in the valley for 13 years.


Born April 7, 1914 in San Antonio, Tex., Lucille Adelle Denson was 70. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.


JACK COOVERT


A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, March 26, at the KRV Masonic Lodge in Kernville for Elmo R. "Jack" Coovert of Wofford Heights. Officiating were officers of Masonic Lodge No 827 F & AM.


Mr. Coovert passed away March 23 at the San Joaquin Hospital, Bakersfield.


He is preceeded in death by his wife Esther Mary, who died in January, 1985, and aurvived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Olive and Del Badgley of San Dimas and . cousin Roland Mckenzie of Bakersfield.


Jack Coovert was past Master of the Masons and was a member of Eastern Star.

Veronica M. Robinson of Lake Isabella passed away at the Kern Valley Hospital March 24.


She is preceeded in death by her husband, Mack, and survived by her sisters Imelda Bailey of Hanover, Illinois; Evelyn Schrup of Iowa, Gladys Faha of New Mexico, Alvina Pierce of California, Rosemary Friedman of Iowa, Leona Quirk of Wisconsin; brothers Arnold Stillmunks of Nebraska, Harmon Stillmunks of Iowa and John Stillmunks of California.


Veronica had been a member of St. Jude Parish Catholic Church since 1968 and a member of the St. Jude Altar Society.

GERTRUDE SMITH Gertrude Smith of Wofford Heights passed away March 24 at San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield.


She is survived by her daughters, Georgetta Ried of Kernville, Barbara Parker of Los Angeles; stx grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. Mrs. Smith has been a resident of the Kern Valley since 1975.

Harold Vernon "Hal" Harrison passed away March 23 at Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield.


He is aurvived by his wife of 45 years, Jean, of Lake Isabella; sons Gordon of Arizona, Ronald of Michigan, Clyde of New Mexico; brother Richard of Big Bear; sister Audrey Townsend of Lynwood; aunt Agnes Thomas of Riverside and 7 grandchildren.


Hal was a member of the Lions Club for 27 years, the Moose for 6 years and the Elks for 30 years. He was retired as chief of the Redondo Beach Fire Dept.


A memorial service was conducted for Hal Harrison at KRV Elks Lodge No. 2358 in Wofford Heights on March 27, officiating were officers of the lodge.


Born May 19, 1916, in Tower, Colo., "Hal" Harrison was 68.

GERALD W. HANAWALT


A funeral service was conducted Monday April 1 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Gerald W. Hanawalt of Lake Isabella. Officiating was Rev. Tim Anderson, Pastor of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. Mr. Hanawalt passed away Mar. 27 at Kern Valley Hosptial.


He is preceeded in death by his wife Celestine "Tena" who died in 1960. He is survived by his son Douglas L. Hanawalt of Lake Isabella and two grandchildren.


Gerald Hanawalt was a motion picture prop builder for more than 40 years. He worked primarily for MGM studios. After his retirement he moved from the Los Angeles area to the Kern Valley where he worked with his son Doug in comstruction. Hanawalt was a member of Local 44 of the Affiliated Property Craft Persons AFL/CIO. Born April 7, 1902 in Indiana, Gerald Wayne Hanawalt was 82. Interment at Inglewood Park Cemetery.

Memorial services were held Saturday, Mar. 30 at the Alano Club in Fresno for Robert Dale Chapinan , 53, of Lake Isabella who died March 25 in a Fresno hospital.


He Is survived by daughters Rebecca Crockett, and Nikki Shatswell both of Fresno; brothers Chuck Chapman, of Pennsylvania. Russell and Tom Chapman of Los Angeles; aisters Emma Angott and Imogene Chapman both of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren. Arrangements by Nova Cremation Service, Fresno.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 3 at 10 a.m. in the Mish Funeral Home, Olldale for Joe Arliss Freear who died March 30 In a Bakersfield hospital following a short illness. The Rev. Bud Frye will officiate. Cremation will be private and his ashes will be in the Engle- Stockton Cemetery on the Stockton Ranch.


He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Maggie) Freear, Wofford Helghts; niece, Tanna; and nephew Mark Freear; his long-time partner, Scott Norman of Alaska; Lorie Vargaa of Visalia, Mary Lynn Roads of Sacramento, Sue Norman, an aunt of Morro Bay and uncle Cal Wiseman.


Mr. Freear was a heavy duty equipment operator and owned his own gold mine in the Bodfish Canyon area.


He was a graduate of Kern Union High School and Bakersfield College. Born Aug. 29, 1935 in Bakersfield, Joe Freear was 49.

He is survived by his wife of 22 Years, Sharon of Onyx ; mother Pauline Watkins of Lake Isabella; sons Roland of Onyx, Denis of Palmdale; daughters Cheri Watkins and Avie Hamlin of Palmdale, Tawnia Watkins of Bakersfield. Kathy Watkins of Onyx, Patty Watkins and Barbara Watkins of Onyx; grandchildren Kenneth Watkins, Sharon Ross, Kara Connely, brothers, Paul of Northridge and Dean of Las Vegas.


Born Sept. 29 1936 in Topeka, Kansas, Kenneth Dale Watkins was 48.

OBITUARY


CHARLES JOHNSON


A graveside funeral service was conducted Monday, April 15, at the Kern River Valley cemetery for Charles W. Johnson of Bodfish. Officiating was the Kern River Valley Veterans Council, Jesse E. Wright, Chaplain; Fred Dodds, commander. Johnson passed away April 12, 1985, at Kern Valley Hospital.


He la survived by his wife of 51 years, Julie, of Bodfish; daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and Richard Reese of San Pedro; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and David Frank of Lake Isabella; brothers James Johnson of Campbell and Weston Johnson of Tracy; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II where he served aboard the Destroyer USS Hawkins (DD873) In the Asiatic-Pacific area and received the bronze star.


Johnson was a Mason and a member of the El Segundo Lodge 507 and a member of KRV Moose Lodge No 498.


Born April 27, 1913, in Albee, So. Dak., Charles Woodrow Johnson was 71.


EDMUND HIGDON


A memorial service was conducted Friday, April 12, at the Kern River Valey Eagles Lodge, Mt. Mesa, for Edmund H. Higdon of Bodfish. Officiating were officers of KRV Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 3156.


Higdon passed away April 9 at the Kern Valley Hospital.


He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edna, of Bodfish; daughter, Sally of Weldon; brother, Loyd of San Angelo, Tex .; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.


Higdon was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II. Born March 18, 1912, in Missouri, Edmund Harold Higdon was 73.

OBITUARY


FRANK ROCCO BARATTI


Rosary services were held Thursday, April 11, at 10a.m. at St. Jude's Catholic Church for Frank Rocco Baratti, 86, of Squirrel Valley. who died April 8, 1985, in a Bakersfield hospital after a long illness.


A Mass of Resurrection followed the Rosary services with Msgr. Anthony Herdegen as the celebrant. Catholic graveside rites were Friday at 1 p.m. in All Souls Catholic Cemetery in Long Beach with Fr. Patrick Gannon of St. Paul of the Cross Parish officiating. Baratti was a native of Italy and had lived in the area since 1913 and was a moulder for the Alloy Steel and Metals Co. before his retirement. He had lived in Whittier before moving to Squirrel Valley.


He was a member of the St. Jude's Catholic Parish at Wofford Height. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Baratti, Squirrel Valley; brother John Baratti, Gardena; nephews John and Robert Baratti of Squirrel Valley, James of Fallon, Nev. and a niece, Alice Christensen of Rialto. Mish Funeral Home, Oildale, was in charge of arrangements.


LINETTE COVINGTON CHATELLE


A graveside memorial service was held at the Kern River Valley Cemetery for Linette Covington - Chatelle on Tuesday, April 16. Officiating was Pastor Tim Anderson of the Shepherd of the Hills Church. Linette passed away April 8 at the Kern Medical Center, Bakersfield. She is survived by her husband Patrick Chatelle of Lake Isabella; parents Mr. and Mrs. Andrew W. Covington of Redondo Beach; son Marcus; daughter Shannel and brother bruce.


Born May 24, 1960, in Los Angeles, Linette Covington-Chatelle was 24. Cremation arrangements by Valley Mortuary.
